🩸Blood Donors 🩸

Just like in human medicine animals sometimes need a blood transfusion and we are always on the lookout for donor dogs and cats.

Unlike the human blood transfusion service, we only call for these donations when we need them: so vou know that very donor animal is giving blood only when it is needed. We maintain a list of donors at the practice that we can call upon when necessary.

If you would like your pet to become one of our registered blood donors that can be called upon to help save the life of a critically ill animal, click the link below.

Here you can see if your pet meets the criteria and if so, you can contact the practice and your pet will join this life saving list!

The Importance of Vaccinations 💉

Vaccinating your pets helps to keep them safe from a number of diseases and infections – some of which can be fatal.

To stay safe, dogs, cats and bunnies need a primary vaccination course when they’re young, followed by booster injections every year.

Let’s take a look at what we routinely vaccinate against…

Dogs 🐶

Parvovirus – A serious, highly contagious disease. Parvovirus spreads when an affected dog makes contact with a non-infected dog, and can even be transmitted through faeces.

Leptospirosis – Lepto is a bacterial infection that spreads through infected rat urine and contaminated water. We don’t know where rats have been, or where they’ve urinated, so it’s impossible to avoid coming into contact with it.

Distemper – A serious virus that spreads through the air! Distemper is more common in younger dogs when their immune systems have not yet fully developed.

Hepatitis – Hepatitis is incurable. It spreads through the bodily fluids of infected dogs and can cause jaundice, liver failure, seizures… and even death.

Cats 🐱

Cat Flu – Cat Flu is caused by Feline Herpesvirus (FHV) and Feline Calicivirus (FCV).

Feline Enteritis – A highly contagious disease that’s often fatal. Feline Enteritis causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea.

Feline Leukaemia – Attacks the cat’s immune system and leaves them at risk of infection and illness

Rabbits 🐰

Myxomatosis – Myxomatosis is a nasty, fast-acting disease that can prove fatal in just 10 days.

RVHD1 + 2 – Both strains of Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease cause internal bleeding. They’re highly infectious and can also be fatal.

We say… just don’t risk it! If you’d like to chat with us further about why preventative vaccinations are so important, just give us a call on 016270402

Microchipping ✅

Under the Microchipping of Dogs Regulations of 2015, it is now compulsory to have your dog microchipped and registered with a government approved database (see below). You will also need to have a dog microchipping certificate in your possession.

When getting your dog microchipped, you will need to bring Photo ID and a Utility bill with your current address, from the previous 3 months, as well as your dog. All dogs are required to be microchipped by 12 weeks of age, or beforehand if ownership is being transferred e.g. a new owner buying a pup from a breeder.

The procedure itself can be carried out in the clinic during a normal consultation. The microchip, which is about the size of a grain of rice, is injected under the skin by the vet or nurse, usually between the shoulder blades. The registration forms are then filled out, and that’s it! We will then register the details online and you should receive your certificate within two weeks

If your dog is already microchipped, you will need to contact your database provider to check your details are correct and to obtain the microchipping certificate.

If you unsure as to whether or not your dog is microchipped, or do not know the number, bring them into us and we will scan for a chip. We will then check that the microchip is registered correctly with an approved database.

If your dog’s chip is not registered with an approved database, we can assist you with this here at Beaufield to ensure you get a Dog Microchipping Certificate.

🐱There is no legislation in place regarding microchipping of cats and it is not compulsory. Here at Beaufield we do strongly encourage microchipping your pet cat, as it is the most reliable form of identification available, and offers the best chance of reunification should your beloved pet go missing.

Microchipping costs €35 at Beaufield and can be done during clinics with an appointment or at the time of another procedure e.g. neutering. If you have any queries, or would like to book an appointment, please call us on 01-6270402 and our staff will be delighted to help you!

Canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD) or Kennel cough (KC).
This can be passed through the air, live in water and even on our clothes.
So make sure your dog is up to date with their vaccinations, even if they’re just saying a quick hello in the street!
