🐾Last night, we worked on delayed starts, as Halle is a young and energetic AND VERY CLEVER dog, who got a little anxious with the normal routine at the beginning of the trail.
🙌So we mixed it up, (after trying a few different things for the intensity starts) and moved her forward to delayed starts. Halle seemed to relax more and focus on the work ahead.
💜 Here she is, working out her negative on a back trail to get back on the path where the trail layer went. (we do these do we learn our dogs behaviour and WATCH 👁️ the changes so we learn how to read them better)
Honestly, I have not watched a dog grow so much in only a few months. She is ABSOLUTELY amazing. Clever, intelligent, loyal and a great snuggle bunny.

I recently got a peek into Tulsa Pack Athletics training about the open minded approach 💜
I have learned so much about dog training and myself over the years.
🤷🏻♀️We have a range of dog trainers available, from super intense about everything to those who reward for everything, even if it is not the behaviour they want….. 🤔
🐾 It is a relatively new concept that dogs who don’t “look” like they need a muzzle, wear a muzzle.
🐶Some people come to me super stressed about muzzle training and I totally get it. I was there too and we only want to do right by our dogs 🐾
✨ I am muzzle training Raven because she is a 💩 / 🐇/ 🐥 / 🐍 eater and safety too….
When training and feeling anxious about “making a mistake” or saying “no” or anything really, just forget about labels and start here 👇🏼
✅ Train the dog in front of you without messing up their confidence
✅ Do fun and silly stuff and make an arse out of yourself to train your dog- trust me, they love it
✅ Only train your dog when you feel up to it AND and the dog seems excited to learn
✅ Do not spend ages training, 2/3 min is plenty when starting a new behaviour

🐾I made friends with a farmer in the area where I can take my dogs walking pretty much daily uninterrupted (✅they wear muzzles when on public property)
🙈 But I don’t just let them off and hope for the best. I know that this place is fenced in and there are minimal animals around, but I need to make sure we are on the same page at all times.
This did not come easy.
I had to teach each dog, one at a time what I expect while we are out, and then add in each dog one at a time.
🦮🦮🦮🦮 I am a huge advocate for multiple dog households, but it doesn’t not always come easy.
⏰ We put the work in to make sure each dog, with their own personality and own likes / dislikes, gets to enjoy their time outside.

🐕The importance of scent inventory and making sure your long line is set up the way you want before taking scent.
💜The ability of your instructor to be able to adapt the foundations and component skills to each dog, is vital.
🐾Some dogs are not used to a harness yet, so we adapt and let them come out on a harness instead of a flat collar.

What kind of dog trainer do you have?
I don’t mean what type of training do they specialise in or what method do they follow.
What kind of person is your dog trainer?
I sometimes get calls from clients who have gone to trainers because they have big social media following or because everyone knows them. They come to me because something was off and even though that person is hugely popular in their area, they listened to their instincts.
To me, when picking a trainer, I like to know how the person is outside of the training time.
🐾Are they nice to other people in the same business as them?
I question people who think everyone else in the same field is “competition” or if they do not collaborate with a single other trainer in their area.
🐾Do they treat their own pets kindly?
Training is a demanding job, with a lot of it spent outside of the home. Are their own animals needs met?
🐾Do they have traceable credentials and certificates?
Sure, you can make up your own method of training and it might work for a handful of people. We don’t have any regulations here in Ireland when it comes to dog training. So where did they learn what they are telling you to apply as a way of training your own pets?
🐾 How does the trainer make the pet owner feel?
Do you leave feeling uncomfortable or not good enough…. I have heard this a few times now. Always listen to your ‘gut’ feelings.
⭐️⭐️Someone can post up on social media being the happiest person out there training and fixing 10 dogs a week while advertising they have certificates in multiple courses⭐️⭐️

Always be mindful of change in your dog’s behaviour….. they were on a scent of something, could have been a bird or deer or a horse down the road as the wind was blowing (side note, wind in the Forrest can sometimes sound like cars passing 🙈) ….. we called off the chase and I gave them the reward of finding treats on the ground to substitute the drive.
Okay I hate talking on camera as I look SO weird….. but I figured someone would want to hear my voice and see my big head 🙈😂

Mantrailing is a sport designed off search and rescue training.
There are a zillion components to Mantrailing properly. Each one needs dedication and constant practice.
This isn’t a sport where you rush from level to level without explanation or know what you are getting certified for. It could take years to ger to level 1 for some dogs.
New schedule going up today for Intro workshops and progression trails.
We have a huge event on in August as three instructors will host a full day of component training in Galway and I’m hoping to get many of you to sign up.

🙌 Another thing I taught my dogs, is distance awareness.
✅ Long lines are an AMAZING way to teach that, as the dog can only go so far as the length of the line and then you can call them back and reward while training!
💖 Over time, they learn that your implied “bubble” is about the length of the line and they enjoy being around you
🐾 I have shepherds and a pointer cross, so I find that they don’t enjoy coming back until their “job” is finished- so I use “wait” as a way for me to ask them to check in
🤔 Keeping it real though, I have 4 dogs and I had to teach them 1 at a time what I was expecting, and then build up to taking all 4 at the same for a walk.
🐾 One of my specialities in training, is how to get multiple dog houses in synchrony 💖

🥳 Monday was nothing short of magical when I was able to gain a full day of Mantrailing advancement with Éadaoin from @houndsandhelis
🐾We trained hard and practiced our skills like door indications, reading our negatives and Ruckus’ favourite - at the train station !!
There is SO MUCH to learn about Mantrailing and every session not only strengthens what we know, but also teaches us something new as a team 🙌
