We are sure you know by now that we think ALL of our patients are pretty incredible, but we thought it was time to introduce you to Toby - a dog with a little extra awesome! 🤩
You see Toby was born with a heart problem called a PDA or Patent Ductus Arteriosus. The ductus arteriosus is a connection between the two major vessels that leave the heart, the pulmonary artery and the aorta. This connection normally closes when a puppy takes its first breath, but in Toby’s case it never did.
When Toby was examined during a general health check, he was noted to have an abnormal heart sound and was scheduled to have a heart scan, where the defect was confirmed.
Without surgical correction a PDA will lead to progressive heart enlargement and heart failure with lung congestion.
Surgery was Toby’s best chance at survival and was scheduled with our vet Megan as soon as possible.
A procedure like this takes a highly trained and skilled team - it was all hands on deck for Toby’s procedure day. Everyone had a part to play so that surgery could go as smoothly as possible. We were all rooting for Toby!
The surgery involves opening the chest, exposing the heart and ligating (tying off) the PDA, all while monitoring the patient closely for any signs of decompensation.
Thankfully with Toby’s fighting spirit and our teams expertise we were able to call the surgery a success. A follow up scan recently showed positive news, and Toby will continue to be monitored closely as he grows up.
See that big smile? It never once left his face. ❤️
We are so honoured to be entrusted with Toby’s life and so proud to be able to deliver this care to the patients of West Cork. 🐾

❗️Warning! Itch Alert! ❗️
This little dude is Otodectes cynotis, better known as the cat ear mite. 🐱
They can’t hop, or fly, but as you can see they can crawl pretty quickly!
Typically, affected cats show signs of ear scratching, head shaking and excessive dark discharge from the ear canals. As you can imagine, they are extremely itchy and uncomfortable. ❌
One of our feline friends presented to us to assess her itchy sore ears, and this is what we found when we looked under the microscope. Hundreds of creepy crawly friends that make you itchy just looking at them… 😳
Though ear mites are very contagious between cats, they are generally easy to treat. This little patient underwent a thorough ear cleaning and went home with ear medications and a spot on treatment to cure the infestation. 🩺
Remember to check your furry friends ears and contact us if you notice anything unusual. This lady will feel a whole lot better once her little pals are gone! ❤️
This is the story of Bobby, a mischievous little puppy 🐶who became ill one day after his pet mom caught him eating a sock🙊.
.
He was only 10 weeks old, so we decided he was too tiny to let the sock pass through by itself🤕.
.
However we got a big surprise when we found what he had been up to...😂

🚨Does your pets bad breath keep the two of you from snuggling? Do you wish you could give your pet a breath mint? 🧐
.
Contrary to popular belief, “doggy breath” is not normal 🤐 In fact, it could be one of the first signs that your furry pal is developing dental disease.
.
Regular brushing helps slow down and treat the onset of dental disease.
.
💡 Here is some advice on how to get tour pet used to regular brushing.

Albert before surgery
Following on from our recent airway video we wanted to share a recent case of our own. This is Albert. Albert is a British Bulldog who suffers from Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Disease or BOAS. This is a syndrome that includes many problems such as stenotic nares, elongated palate, redundant pharyngeal folds, and hypoplastic trachea. Due to the anatomical structure of the brachycephalic breeds they are subjected to difficulty in breathing. Secondary issues that can occur due to the obstruction of the airway are everted laryngeal saccules, laryngeal collapse, tracheal collapse, hiatal hernia, and gastrointestinal disease/vomiting. Albert suffers from stenotic nares, elongated palate, redundant pharyngeal folds, and a grade 1 laryngeal collapse. His side effects of his obstructed airway were sleep apnea, inability to breath without an extended neck, inability to cope with hot weather and subsequent respiratory distress, and oesophageal reflux. We performed corrective nares surgery, resection of the elongated palate and excision of the everted saccules. We managed his secondary acid reflux and placed him on a strict weight management program. As a result of this, Albert sleeps soundly through the night and has a significantly improved quality of life, as well as, life expectancy. Many of the brachycephalic breeds suffer from the BOAS syndrome. It is important as an owner that you recognise when your animal is distressed and in need of help. Please contact us if you have any questions, thank you!
