There are many precautions that can be taken to keep your dog safe and well on a hot day.
Don't excessively walk your dog
Avoid walking your dog at the hottest times of the day - often morning or later in the evenings can be cooler
Always take plenty of water with you when out with your dog
Make sure the dog has shade to cool off in, either inside or when out
Take your dog to the groomer and keep their fur clipped
Dogs can get sun burned - especially white dogs or those with little hair so try and keep them out of direct sun
Think twice about any car trips with your dog - avoid congested roads or busy times of day when they could overheat in the car if you are caught up in traffic
If driving with your dog plan your journey considering cooler times of the day and places to take breaks
Don't leave your dog in a car - as temperatures rise, dogs overheat quickly and leaving them for as little as 20 minutes could prove fatal

WAGS wish you a very happy Easter and want to remind you that Easter chocolates are off limits for dogs, even in small amounts!
Watch your four-legged friends over Easter as even the smallest amount of chocolate can prove toxic. As chocolate bunnies and eggs are hidden in preparation of Easter egg hunts this weekend, the risks to chocolate-loving pets increases. Leaving chocolate in reach of dogs could be fatal and the smaller the dog, the less they need to eat to become unwell. The substance theobromine, which is found in cocoa, is toxic to dogs because they lack the enzymes needed to break it down once it is ingested.

Protecting Animals at Halloween
Halloween trick-or-treating is an exciting time for kids but can also be a distressing time for our pets. Each year in Ireland, animal rescue centres and veterinary practices around the country are inundated with animals needing attention due to Halloween celebrations.
Animals can become so terrified from the noise of bangers and fireworks going off near their homes that they are driven to extreme behaviour. The ISPCA recommends you should always have effective pet identification such as an ID tag on your pets collar and a micro-chip in the event your pet escapes.
Keeping animals secure:
Dogs and Cats
Steps can be taken to minimise the stress caused to pets by training them in advance of the Halloween festivities. The use of dog appeasing pheromones can also be effective. Consult your vet or animal behaviourist for advice.
Pets should have somewhere to hide where they feel secure. They should have access to this refuge before the bangers and fireworks start.
Bring pets into a quiet room within your house, close windows and curtains, and play music to mask the noise of fireworks.
If your pet is showing signs of fear do not react or make a fuss as this will make matters worse. As difficult as it may be, try to ignore fearful behaviour.
Anxiety in the animal can be reduced by altering feeding regimes. Feeding later in the evening will encourage the animal to eat during what are anxiety creating periods.
Licking objects such as Kongs filled with peanut butter will help reduce stress.
Playing with your pets can be effective in reducing stress if they are up for a game. If not, do not try to force them.
Keep pets away from any dangerous or flammable items including candles, bonfires and fireworks.
If children will be calling to your door trick-or-treating make sure your pets are securely confined so they cannot stray through an open door or react negatively to scary costumes.
Keep pets away from decorations and sweets that could be harmful if ingested. Remember that chocolate is very bad for your pets.

Why Micro-chipping your dog is a no-brainer
Every year, thousands of pets go missing and fewer than half are reunited with their owners. Micro-chipping your pet is the most effective way of ensuring that your pet can be identified and returned to you. Collars and identification discs can be slipped off or removed but a microchip is a permanent identification method that will increase the likelihood of an owner being located.
What is a microchip and how does it work?
A microchip is a small electronic transponder about the size of a grain of rice. It is painlessly injected under the animals’ skin. In a dog it is injected under the skin, just between the shoulder blades, using a sterile needle. Microchips contain a unique 15 digit number which can be read using a special scanner which can be found at most vets, local authority dog shelters or animal welfare organisations. If a microchip is discovered, a national database can be checked and the owner notified. If your details change, such as moving house, you should contact the database operator to update your contact details.
How much will it cost?
It will cost around €20 - €30 to get your pet micro-chipped and can be done by your vet. Animal welfare organisations may offer reduced price micro-chipping for those on benefits. If you get a rescue dog, most animal welfare organisations, including the ISPCA, micro-chip the dog before they are rehomed – so please consider adopting a dog from a reputable rescue centre.
Do it now!
Don’t put off getting your pet micro-chipped. Don’t wait until it is too late – do it now. The government is proposing to make micro-chipping for dogs compulsory in 2016 so you will have to do it eventually, but why wait. Micro-chipping gives you peace of mind that if your dog gets lost, goes missing or is stolen, the chances of it being returned to you will be significantly greater.
It’s a no-brainer – be a responsible dog owner and get your dog micro-chipped today!

Now that it gets darker earlier, if you enjoy a night stroll with your beloved dog, here are some safety tips for walking your dog in the dark:

Wear a reflective vest: Wearing dark colours while walking your dog in the dark could potentially put your life, your dog’s life, and other lives at risk. Instead, wear a reflective vest that will make it easy for motorists to see you on the side of the road.

Get your dog a reflective collar and/or lead: Keep your dog safe with a reflective dog collar and/or dog lead. As your reflective vest will warn oncoming motorists of your presence, your dog’s collar and/or lead will do the same.

Carry a torch:If walking down dark streets or through areas where there are no street lights, be sure you carry a torch to guide your path.

Walk in well-lit areas:While off the beaten path destinations may be perfect for a long walk during the day, it's safer to walk in well lit areas at night if possible, to ensure both your and your dog’s safety.

Don’t forget your mobile phone:Take your mobile phone with you, in case of an emergency and keep it on so you have it readily available if needed.

Safe & Happy Walking

Puppy Love
A puppy’s initial experiences at a grooming salon can set the stage for how they respond to being groomed for the rest of their life, so it's vital to make the experience as pleasant as possible.
The first visit to the groomer should be a familiarisation visit and not last more than 10-15 minutes. WAGs will get your puppy used to the noises and smells of the salon, give the puppy lots of cuddles and praise and generally make their first visit an all-around fun experience. WAGs will take the time to introduce your puppy to grooming in a step-by-step, gentle, loving way, and make your puppy’s all-important first visit to the grooming salon a wonderful experience that will help him enjoy being groomed throughout his life. Please call WAGs to schedule a free familiarisation appointment or if you have any questions regarding your puppy’s grooming requirements.
