Training starts with watching your pup play.

Vinny is five months old now and while I was out doing a few jobs in the training field on this fresh frosty morning, I turned and caught him having the best time with one of the toys.

I like giving him time like this, this as part of his development.
No plan.
No structure.
Just a young dog having fun.

Watching him in these moments helps me learn about him.
How he grabs the toy.
How he moves with it.
How he starts little games on his own.

These short bits of play help me see what he naturally enjoys before I turn those ideas into training. It keeps everything easy for both of us.

Do you learn from your dog’s natural play too?

“She’s too anxious, she needs medication.”

That was the advice this owner received.
She left that appointment feeling like she’d failed her dog.

But anxiety doesn’t always need medication.
Sometimes it needs understanding, structure, and time.

Two sessions in, and this team is already proving that.

We’re working in a carefully managed setup, one that lets both dog and handler build confidence safely.

In this clip, they’re walking past one of my own dogs, Hansy, which would have felt impossible not long ago.

Look closely.
Her dog is staying calm.
Checking in.
Holding engagement.
Choosing connection over panic.

This progress didn’t happen by chance or shortcuts.
It came from:
• Clear direction and predictable routines
• Controlled exposure to triggers
• Reinforcement for calm, focused choices
• A handler who now understands what her dog needs to feel safe

Medication can sometimes help when anxiety runs deep, but it should never be the first answer.

It can’t teach a dog how to feel safe, and it can’t teach a handler how to guide.

Real progress happens when both learn to trust the process.

Anxiety can be managed through training, not just medication.

If your dog has been on meds over a year get in touch to discuss which program is the best fit for you and your dog’s journey. Let’s take the first step together!

The worst piece of training advice, EVER!!

Some people claim play teaches behaviours you will not want in other situations.

Reliable research tells a different story.
Play supports learning.
Play improves focus.
Play helps reduce stress.
Play strengthens the connection between you and your dog.

You can guide that energy with clear structure.
• Give a start cue
• Give an end cue
• Teach a clean drop
• Pause early if arousal rises
• Reward the behaviours you want

Dogs understand context when we show it to them.

When play is structured, your dog gains better control and better habits.

If today felt hard, that’s okay. It means you’re in the middle of growth.

It might not feel like it in the moment, but if you showed up and worked through the hard stuff today, you did great.

Growth isn’t always tidy. It’s full of messy moments, setbacks, and days that feel sideways. I’ve had those too.

As trainers, we sometimes guide you and your dog into tougher spots, not to overwhelm you, but to help you learn how to lead through real challenges.
It’s common to see a dog have one of their hardest days near the end of training. That’s often a good thing. Those moments test your calm, your consistency, and your control.

Here’s one mindset shift I teach every student: stop taking your dog’s behaviour personally.

When a dog misses a cue, frustration is easy. We assume they’re stubborn, but most of the time, they’re communicating.

Maybe the ground is wet. Maybe they’re overstimulated, unsure, or confused.

Behaviour is feedback. Our job isn’t to take it as an insult, it’s to get curious.
Ask yourself:
🐾 “Is my dog in the right headspace to learn?”
🐾 “Have I taught this clearly in this place?”
🐾 “What might be competing for their attention?”

When you stop taking it personally, you become a calmer communicator, a steadier leader, and a better teammate.

If you stayed patient today, leaned into the work, and kept showing up, you’re doing well. You’ve made more progress than you realize.

Stop wasting your dog’s potential.

This is why I train the way I do, Sport work isn’t only about competition It builds control, focus, and trust that carry into everyday life.

A 4.5-month-old pup off leash.
A 4-year-old dog beside him.
Both free, both listening.

That’s the benefit of sport-style training, It’s not only for competition dogs, it’s for anyone who wants real control, focus, and freedom.

The same methods that prepare a dog for trial work turn an everyday walk into teamwork.

Markers, structure, and consistency build habits that hold up in the real world.

That’s why Vinny can stay off leash at 4.5 months.
That’s why Hansy can enjoy freedom and still come back the moment I call.

Sport-style training teaches:
• Focus under distraction
• Impulse control through drive
• Clarity in communication
• Confidence without chaos

This kind of freedom doesn’t come from luck or fancy cues.
It comes from structure, repetition, and a bond built rep by rep.

It’s not about creating a robot.
It’s about building a dog who loves to work with you.

When you train like this, control doesn’t limit freedom.
It creates it.

Real drive grows long before the field.

4-month-old Vinny and I sneaking in a quick food play session before sunrise.

Quiet mornings like this are when I see his energy start to build.

Using his food this way shapes focus and keeps him eager to work with me.

Right now, I’m not chasing perfect behaviour. I’m rewarding his effort and the bond we’re building.

Just a few minutes like this before breakfast can shape the mood for everything that follows.

We put so much energy into building drive,
yet few handlers teach their dogs how to come down.

Decompression walks are not days off.

They are part of the work.
No toys. No drills.
Only free movement, scent, and choice.

They reduce over-arousal.
They work the brain through scent instead of speed.

They give space for reactive or tense dogs to regulate.

They build connection without commands.
They prepare the mind for clearer training.

A dog who learns to switch off
returns cleaner when it is time to switch on.

Do you plan decompression,
or are all your walks structured?

If you think your Malinois, Shepherd, or collie doesn’t need real work because you “just want a pet,” think again.

A working dog without purpose will create their own.

That’s when you see:
• Frustration
• Chaos
• Anxiety and reactivity

Training a working breed isn’t about trophies or bite sleeves.

It’s about meeting the dog you chose with what they truly need:

• Mental challenges – problem-solving, tasks, tracking
• Physical outlets – controlled power, drive fulfilment
• Clear structure – rules that create calm

A fulfilled working dog isn’t wired or wild.
They’re stable, settled, and connected, because their needs have been met first.

This kind of training doesn’t push you apart.
It builds a bond rooted in respect, not restriction.

Don’t fight their nature.
Work with it.

Teach them. Challenge them.
Enjoy the dog you really have.
