Meet Simba, a beautiful Bernese Mountain dog.

When I started working with Simba, he was 11 months old. He was fearful of visitors to the yard and had started showing aggression towards some men. He would creep up when they weren't looking and take a snap, finally making contact with someones pants leg. This was especially problematic as the area that Simba was kept during the day was something of a working yard, with several people entering and leaving the yard throughout the day.

When I first met Simba, he showed significant fear and nervousness towards me as I walked in. I had initially been told that it was generally just men, and particularly those with loud voices, but even speaking softly and doing as much as I could to make him feel comfortable, he only really came close to me towards the end of the session.

I put a plan in place with his owners, starting with making sure that Simbas diet was on track and that his mental and physical needs were being met, as well as starting with some simple counterconditioning exercises towards strange people. Even within the first week, there was a massive improvement in him. He came running up to me on week 2 and within 10 minutes was not only taking food out of my hand, but letting me pet him.

Due to personal issues in his family, I couldn't continue with them past our third session, but the progress that these guys even managed to make in those short three sessions was significant. Simba's life and their's was greatly improved, with him still being nervous of men, but his aggression had not resurfaced since we started working together, and his fear of strange people markedly reduced.

It was a pity that we could not finish working together, but I just wanted to give a shout out to the work that was put into Simba in the time that I was working with them, and the super results that these yielded. I can always see when clients put the work into their dogs, and watching improvements in the dog and owners life, like I could see with Simba, is really what makes my job so rewarding to me.

A big well done guys. You did a super job with him ❀️

Little Bruno, at just 5 months old is already picking up on loose lead heeling like a boss 😎

I'm always amazed with puppies. They are very seldom perfect, but when you consider that this little pup has literally been alive for only 5 months, his ability to comprehend, his intelligence and willingness to comply with what we ask... I just find them incredible. Hes a little rock star ❀

These guys did a super job with this boy. He's a sweet natured, lovely boy and has the kind of personality that I hope that every family with a new dog is lucky enough to find.

I have no doubt that this little guy will grow up to be a wonderful member of the family ❀

This lovely boy is Jarvis the 11 month old Harrier.

His dad called my because he was having trouble getting Jarvis to come back when called. We booked a session and I went in to evaluate what needed to be done with him.

When I met Jarvis, things were a little more complicated than initially expected. He had issues coming when called, putting on his lead/collar, was too nervous to be taken on walks, was too scared to get into the dog trailer so couldn't leave the property and sometimes took his family upwards of an hour to get him into his sleeping area each evening. It was a simple recall issue that had implications over several areas of his life and caused his family much frustration.

Jarvis lives with an older Beagle and a Jack Russel. He is the pup in the group and the other two are big personalities. It was fascinating watching once we let the other dogs out, how Jarvis lit up. He was incredibly submissive to them, but also seemed to derive a whole lot of confidence from them too, and his whole demeanour changed once they were let out.

I've been working with Jarvis and his family for just over a month now and Jarvis has made super progress!

He now comes when called, willingly allows his owners to put his lead and collar on, happily goes for walks and will now jump in the trailer by himself and can be transported out from the property. Getting him into his sleeping area now takes a few minutes maximum. His owners are delighted :) The two keys was using his food to teach him different behaviours, as well as using his relationship with the other dogs. Taking him walking with Ben, the Beagle allowed Jarvis to go walking without shutting down, watching Ben and emulating him. Once we acclimated him to the trailer, Ben was with him once it started moving. He has really showed wonderful progress in a very short period of time.

I wanted to give a big shout out to the work that his owners have put into him. He was a slightly different case to my usual and I really enjoyed working with him πŸ₯°

This handsome guy is Bruno. He is a 4.5 month old Bernese Mountain Dog/Labroador/Poodle Cross. At 4.5 months old, this little guy is already 14kg. He is going to be a very big dog πŸ˜†

Bruno is in our Smarty Pup Course and is doing super. He's a nice, laid back and friendly puppy. You can often tell a lot by an animals eyes, and right from the start, Bruno had these lovely soft, gentle eyes. He went through a bit of a fear period, showing nervousness around other dogs and in some situations, but his owners have put good time into socialising him and he's improved on this hugely.

He's a super little dog and is moving through the course very well. πŸ₯°

He is a cavachon/king Charles puppy who is currently enrolled in our Smarty Pup Obedience course.

This little boy is just an absolute delight. He is such a sweet natured and loving little guy, delighting in human company and in pleasing his owners. He has super food drive, an intelligent mind and owners who are dedicated to working with him. This is a super combination for success and he is doing wonderfully in the program so far.

Keep it up guys! He's gorgeous 😍

This beautiful girl is Bambi. Its no secret that I love German Shepherds, and this beautiful girl makes me want another puppy SO badly πŸ˜‚

Bambi is busy with our Smarty Pup obedience course. Although living in a super busy house with 7 human brothers and sisters, in addittion to a golden retriver big sister, little Bambi is thriving.

She has to be the calmest (laziest πŸ˜‚πŸ™ˆ) German Shepherd I have ever met. This goes wonderfully with the busy house she loves in, and when combined with consistent boundaries and training, means that she doesn't mouth all that often, is nice and calm on walks and when meeting other dogs, and is generally picking up on training wonderfully. ❀️

She absplutely loves snuggles and rubs, and iIt should be no suprise that Bambis favourite command so far seems to be "Go to bed" πŸ˜‚

This is what I like to see after a training session. A nice, tired and happy puppy πŸ₯°

This is Ned, a 5 month old Cocker Spaniel. He is showing some space guarding and resource guarding behaviour, so we are working with him to help him understand that humans coming into his space is actually a good thing, and that we don't want to take all of his stuff all the time.

I've only had one session with this little guy so far, but his owners are dedicated to helping him, and he's really a super little puppy, resource guarding aside.

He has a super food drive, picks up on things really quickly and absolutely LOVES to work. I don't doubt that we should see quick results with this little guy πŸ₯°

Meet Sunny πŸ₯°πŸŒž

Sunny is possibly one of the most polite puppies I've yet to meet. Even in his peak puppy teething period, he is gentle with his mouth and isn't too phased. He is a real 'thinker' you get some dogs who see you with a treat and automatically run through everything they know, trying to guess what you want. Sunny considers everything. I can almost see the cogs turning as we teach him new commands πŸ₯°πŸ˜„

He picks things up really well and loves to please. His mom is doing a great job at consistently showing him what's expected and works with him regularly.

Golden Retrievers are hands down my favourite family dog, and little Sunny is a stellar example of why πŸ₯°

I think that very little in the world is cuter than a 9 week old Bernese Mountain dog puppy.

Shadow has signed up for our Baby Dog Obedience course and every time that we meet up for a class I just melt with how adorable this chunky little ball of fluff is πŸ˜‚πŸ₯°πŸ«

Shadow picks up on training really quickly and his mom, dad and two human brothers are doing a fantastic job teaching him how to be the absolute best doggy that he can be.

He definitely makes up part of the highlight of my week. He's a pleasure to work with and I can't wait to see how much we can accomplish with this little guy throughout the course ❀️

This beautiful ball of golden fluff is Tilley! Tilley is a 4 month old Golden who is enrolled in our Smarty Pup course 😊

This beautiful girl is a testament to her breed, with a lovely gentle mouth and a personality that just LOVES to please her owners. Tilley has some human brothers and sisters who absolutely adore her and who she (generally) plays very well with 😊

Puppies and kids are often a difficult combination for the first few months, but Goldens are one of the best dog breeds to go down this road with.

Tilley mom is putting super work into her and she's learning loads. Shes a little smarty and picks up on things quickly. She also has a lovely food drive, and really loves working on the exercises with her mom. Keep up the great work guys! Tilley is doing wonderfully so far πŸ₯°

This is part 3 to our training session, started 2 weeks ago.

We start off with a few obedience exercises and end with some impulse control games.

When he makes a mistake, we just reset and try again. No big deal. I want him to love working with me and when I change things up constantly and quickly, I recognise that it takes considerable concentration to keep up. So by this last part of the traing session, if his concentration flags and he makes a few mistakes, that's OK with me.

I love ending the session with a little scatter feed too. It helps calm him down after all the physical activity and as sniffing is something that dogs find reinforcing, it's a great way to reward him after the session.

Another fun training video with Tyson.😊

This was from a couple of weeks ago, when we were just starting to learn orbit (reverse around me). You will see that my hand stays close to his nose while I'm teaching it, to show him the way that I'd like him to move his body. He tries really hard with this and I was very chugged with him, despite the few mistakes that were made.

He was really full of beans in this session and you can see the level of energy that he had, although he did a great job focusing, despite the energy levels.

You can also see how much I jump between different exercises when I train. This not only stops us from getting bored with the training, but it also keeps him mentally agile, and keeps the training sessions light and fun.

You'll also see that when he makes mistakes, I just tell him "No" and politely set him up and we try again. I know that he tries his best. If he is making mistakes then it's up to me to figure out why. Does he not understand the exercise? Am I going to fast? Are my hands saying one thing while my body is telling him another? Is it after we have already moved through a few exercises and he's either not focusing fully or is becoming tired? Either way, he's not trying to be naughty it's up to me to figure out why he's not listening, and modify it in the next rep or next training session to get a better outcome from him.

21/02/2024

This is part two, following on from last week with a short and fun training session with Tyson.

You can see that over the course of the session, I switch things up often and keep things light-hearted and fun. I reward him often and play with him between exercises.

This is how you can build on your recall too. When your dog loves to work with you and sees you as a source of joy and fun, they are far more likely to come back from other distractions.

Happy training everybody!

A video from a few weeks ago that I forgot to post πŸ™ˆ Tanya working with the fabulous Harry, working on keeping his focus as he loose lead heels past distractions (favourite toys and bowls of food).

These guys both did a super job on the course and made wonderful progress. When I first met Harry, he was a hyper energetic boy who jumped on everyone , pulled on the lead, wouldnt come when called, was separation anxious and destructive, and who and still hadn't managed to master potty training.

By the end of our time together, Harry sat politely when being greeted, had a lovely loose lead walk, a good whistle recall, had fully mastered potty training and his separation anxiety was under control.

Tanya did a fantastic job with him and these two were an absolute pleasure To work with ❀️

This wonderful ball of fluff is Kyro, a little 5 month old Maltese/Bishon mix. If a teddy bear could grace the earth in living form, Kyro would be it. He is such a kind, sweet and gentle soul, but at 5 months old had already been through 2 homes who couldnt keep him due to external circumstances.

Kyros new owners signed him up for puppy classes to get him off to the right start. Their last dog was challenging and they were determined that this pup would fit in better with their lives.

Kyro started off as a very shy and nervous pup. Our first session was a challenge as he would not even let me close enough to feed or touch him, so we needed to compromise and shift things a bit.

We have done 4 lessons now and this little pup has really just blossomed. He has kept his sweet and gentle nature, but with the work that his owners have put in, his confidence has grown hugely and his love of people has been fostered as he's been taught to trust. All this has been challenging as he hadn't even had all his shots yet, but we improvised different ways to socialise him without needing to walk him on ground where other dogs have been, such as socialisation from the car in different areas.
Its also worth mentioning that his main handler is also just 12 years old!

I just wanted to give a shout out to what a great job these guys are doing with this pup. Keep up the wonderful work guys! Kyro has found a lovely home with you πŸ₯°

Breed Spotlight: French Bulldog

Don't be fooled by the name! The French Bulldog's origins trace back to English lacemakers in the 1800s. When they migrated to France, they took these miniature bulldogs with them, which soon gained popularity in French society.

They are known for their affectionate nature and charming personalities. They are compact, easy going and adaptable, making them ideal companions for city dwellers. While they are intelligent little dogs, there is a stubborn streak, and owners will need to exercise persistence nad patience when training. They are also very vocal little dogs, and be prepared to hear a wide range of unique vocalisations.

They do not need huge amount of exercise, but can be rambunctious little guys and do need to be able to let some steam off on a brisk walk or romp in the park

Ensure that you source these dogs from a responsible breeder, as their short faces can cause breathing issues and they don't manage the heat very well as a result. Some dogs may require surgeries to correct these issues. Understanding if the parents or relatives have any issues could save you a big bank cheque later on.

Did you know that trick training can be a wonderful way to keep your dog's mind engaged, while also building your bond together and keeping your dog physically fit?

One of the biggest crowd pleasers is teaching your dog to weave between your legs. We do this by initially teaching your dog to weave around your legs in a figure 8 while you are standing still and then slowly add the movement into it too. The dogs tend to love it and people watching think it's amazing :)

If you're looking for a fun past-time to do with your dog, trick training might be a wonderful option for you. Each trick course will be catered to yourself and your dog, taking into account your skill levels, your dog's age and agility level and how fit they are, as well as any physical limitations that you both may have :)

Meet Harvey 😍

Harvey is a Blue and Tan French bulldog. I've met a number of his standard coloured cousins before, but he's the first blue and Tan I've been lucky enough to meet in real life. If handsome was a French Bulldog, it would be Harvey 😁

Harvey is approximately 6 months old and has come to us for basic obedience training, as well as some typically "French bulldog related behaviour quirks", such as inappropriate tugging on clothing and mouthing hands. He especially shows this behaviour during rough housing and with his 2 human kod brothers.

Luckily, Harvey has a dedicated family and is actually a nice calm example of his breed, with a great food drive, strong desire to please and a good head on his shoulders.

With a few tweeks to his schedule and handling, as well as some obedience skills, I don't doubt that Harvey will be a super family addittion to these guys ❀️

One of the most important things in dog training, is finding what motivates your dog.

Is it food, is it toys, is it praise? Is it a combination of the lot?

Will they work for their nuts? For blueberries or bananas? If the food is thrown in the air or rolled along the ground? What does your dog enjoy and what do they draw value in?

Some dogs are easier to figure out. Labradors are often highly food motivated and love pleasing their owners, so owner praise often plays a big part. However, dogs like Huskies and Shiba Inus have been bred to work more independently, and can often take a little more time to figure out as they don't tend to be as owner-focused as some other breeds.

Once we know what motivates your dog, we will be able to provide them with something that they find valuable so that working with us becomes rewarding for them.

Once we know what your dog finds valuable, we can take off to training with a flying start.

16/01/2024

One of the biggest mistakes that new puppy owners make is in how they start walking with their pups.

Owners are so excited to go walking with their puppies, that they allow the pups to pull them as they walk with them. Generally, pulling is less of an issue at this age because the pups are smaller and muscles haven't developed, so they aren't pulling strongly and we smile at their desire to explore the world and move with them as they pull.

What this does is actually teach our dogs to pull, as they learn that when they want to go somewhere, if they pull, we will follow. If we don't follow, they pull harder and eventually we will move with them. This can literally result in a dog who pulls against their collar so hard that they collapse their trachea in extreme cases.

So what should you do instead?

1) Focus on quality rather than quantity. When your puppy pulls, either stop and wait for them to return to you, or walk in the opposite direction. Teach them that the only way that they can move forward is if the lead is loose.

2) Don't focus on distance. Walking back and forth in front of your gate for 20 minutes, changing direction each time your pup pulls, will ultimately yield better results in the long term than walking around the block and only inconsistently correcting the puppy for pulling.

3) Take your puppy's dinner out with you and use it to reward them when they are walking in the position that you would like them to maintain

4) Keep walks short. Your puppy has a very short concentration span and practicing too much can result in their concentration lapsing and them making more mistakes.

5) Be patient. Just as with children, your pup will make progress and then go backwards a bit and that's ok. Remember that they are still little and they are learning and that their progress will be inconsistent, whereas with older dogs you would see more of a linear progression. Just keep at it, keep consistent and try and enjoy the journey with your puppy, celebrating small wins.

Most of all, have fun together!

What type of lead is the best lead to use?

Long lines? Short leads? Retractables?

That all very much depends on you, your dog and the outcome that you are hoping to achieve.

I dont like using retractable leads when out walking. This is because 1) It teaches your dog that they do not have to walk next to you on lead, and can exacerbate loose lead walking issues and 2) because if something happens and your dog decides to go bolting across the road after a squirrel or ball or after another dog, there is always the chance that the locking mechanism will fail and your dog could wind up in trouble, or in danger if they are running across a road, etc. They do, however, make for really useful tools when teaching things like a recall, allowing you to practice the recall while still giving your dog freedom, and still maintaining a measure of control over them, should they decide to ignore the recall cue.

Long lines can be great for recall and loose lead walking, if used correctly, but can be unwieldily and awkward to use without getting bound in knots.

Shorter leads can provide an easier and safer way to walk your dog, but isnt much good when teaching commands that require more distance.

So it's very much up to what you are hoping to achieve, what your challenges are with your dog and what your coordination levels are like πŸ˜‰
