Engagement..... we all bang on about it because it's super important! But how to start......
One of the very first sessions with engagement. When the puppy looks to engage with you, mark and feed. If they disengage (go away or start searching/sniffing the floor as this puppy did) then stop, wait and when puppy looks back then start all over again. We like to add in small activities to keep up the fun and momentum. The whole session was 2 minutes max and is done a few time a day.
Ultimately this youngster is going to be a sports dog so we would want to encourage them being more pushy and active but if you are not looking for a pushy dog then this is as much as you need.

You will see this in every recall no matter if in the woods out on a walk or on the training field doing retrieves. If your dog is slower to return (or not at all) than they go away then prehaps it time to return to basics and brush up or set better foundations in your engagement, relationship and motivation.

Just a puppy learning puppy things. Group walks are certainly a favourite but also note how he is happy to be in a group with small and a large dog, both entire and very different energy and he still feels happy to explore and do his own thing and building his skills and confidence all the time.
We have been working on all the individual parts of the retrieve for a while now and we really like how it's coming together. A few more parts to polish and we are nearly there!

Harry...... so far almost all his education has been at home but he was more than ready to go new places and show us the same he does at home.
We ask that when we arrive at new place we want the focus and engagement with us, this is certainly a big thing that most people who struggle with reactivity don't have once you are outside the house, often they experience a dog who largely ignores and who is actively looking for things in their environment to be on alert for.
You can see here we have worked hard on his engagement and play and he now has huge freedom (freedom he really needs being a hugh energy dog) to enjoy life outside the safety of his home but with confidence and education.
Alao yesterday was perfect as we were not sure how busy this place would be and as it goes it was too windy for most so we had a few walkers and only one or two dogs at a long distance so was the perfect set up for a very positive day.
And as always, this is still a work in progress, think marathon, not sprint.

Socialisation and environmental training with puppys should look like this.
It is not essential to meet every dog or person and interact,it is often far more beneficial to just look, observe, and be comfortable without interaction and just be neutral. Also, we are using food to condition a happy feeling about things that may a worry to a very young dog.... loud noises, kids, movement of vehicles, etc.
Seeing, hearing and experiencing new and novel things and creating a happy response to them help set puppy's up to be confident and resiliant adults. Get them out to see the world and all the things that will be in their world....... teach them to be the dog you want them to be and to be comfortable in the human world 😎
