🚶‍♂️🐕 One of the biggest reasons dogs pull on lead?

👉 To get to other dogs.

🚩And here’s the tricky part:
Every time pulling “works” (even just once in a while), it heavily reinforces the behaviour — like hitting the jackpot on a slot machine. 🎰

That means:
⚡ Pulling gets stronger, not weaker
⚡ Frustration builds when they can’t get to other dogs
⚡ Walks become stressful for both of you

✨ The solution? Consistency.

🐕‍🦺On-lead greetings = no 🚫

🌳Social time happens off-lead, fenced, or in structured meetups where movement is free. Quality over quantity.

✔️ Puppyhood (3–14 weeks) is a critical window.
✔️ Enrichment unlocks natural talents.
✔️ Positive early experiences build lifelong resilience.

❣️Give them a world worth exploring — and you’ll see their best self shine. 💫

💤 Your dog’s secret superpower?

Sleep! Dogs need more shut‑eye than most people realize — grown‑ups thrive on 12–14 hours a day, while puppies snooze for 18–20 hours.

💡 Why sleep matters: It’s essential for mood regulation, memory & learning, a strong immune system and a healthy metabolism. Without enough quality rest, dogs can become irritable and reactive, struggle to focus and take longer to bounce back from stress.

🌿 Help your dog rest easy:
• Offer a choice of quiet, comfortable spots to nap.
• Keep rest times calm and predictable.
• Address any aches or pains early.
• Avoid overstimulation right before bed.

Let sleeping dogs lie — for their health, happiness and behaviour.

😏What seems like mischief is often actually initiative in action.

🐕In working breeds like pointers, setters, and HPRs, this kind of behaviour isn’t unusual. These dogs were developed to think independently in the field — making decisions about where to search, when to point, and how to retrieve — often far from their handlers.

📱In Episode 10 of Brain and Behaviour, Dr. Jessica Perry Hekman explains how selecting for traits like independence or initiative can produce amazing working dogs… but also leads to unexpected behaviours at home.

🧬Whether it’s a Labrador with a nose for lunch or a setter who “won’t listen” on a walk — it’s not disobedience. It’s design.

📚Read more about initiative in our latest blog post.
