If your dog has a wire coat, consider the benefits of hand-stripping over clipping - hand-stripping removes only the dead topcoat to make room for a healthier, more vibrant and stronger coat while allowing air to better circulate to the skin and preventing compaction of the undercoat.
Dogs are good at hiding their pain - but we owe it to them to do our best to keep them pain-free. These are just some of the indicators of discomfort that your dog might display. Learn to read your dog, and look out for these signs.

Skipper and Bosun wiped out after a maintenance session in the 🐾
🐕 Underwater treadmills are fantastic tools for targeting specific muscle chains or joints. Varying the water height adjusts the buoyant and resistive forces of the water, offering a highly personalised approach to treating conditions such as osteoarthritis, hip/elbow dysplasia and IVDD.
🐕 Low water levels provide targeted resistance for gait adjustment and re-training, as in the case of post-injury or post-operative rehabilitation, while levels above the stifle provide tailored buoyancy support to enable joint ROM and flexibility improvements by supporting the dog’s weight and reducing stress on the joints.
🐕 This is why water-based physiotherapy is particularly beneficial for many musculoskeletal issues. It is also an excellent approach to improving muscle function and cardiovascular fitness for pets and canine athletes alike!

🐾 Our aquatic treadmill has a working surface of almost 2 metres in length, and can accommodate dogs of up to 110kg - so it is suitable for even the largest of breeds.
🐾 Treadmill hydrotherapy makes use of the buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure and resistance of water to reduce joint pain and stiffness and improve muscle function, stability and strength in a controlled environment. The adjustable speed and water height enable targeted conditioning of specific muscle chains, and the heated water function helps to reduce tension and increase circulation.
🐾 Due to its unique ability to improve cardiovascular fitness, strength and balance, this modality also greatly benefits the canine athlete who wants to improve performance and reduce the risk of injury, as well as the pet dog that needs to shed a few pounds.
🐾 Underwater treadmill therapy can greatly improve quality of life for geriatric patients and those with chronic musculoskeletal or neurological conditions, such as IVDD, Degenerative Joint Disease, Hip/Elbow Dysplasia and Degenerative Myelopathy.
🐾 Post-injury and post-operative patients also benefit from this gentle approach to rehabilitation. Please wait until incision sites or wounds are fully closed before booking a session.

Today we had the pleasure of pampering the beautiful Sparkles! Sparkles is a Pyrenean Mountain Dog, and an absolute credit to her breed and her family. She stood like a champ even though she was nervous of having her nails trimmed, and particularly enjoyed her soothing blueberry facial!

We had lots of fun at the Clonakilty Agricultural Society show yesterday, and Skip was delighted to meet Kieran from Glen Veterinary, who was judging the dog show!
This is Skip.
Skip went home with the Perpetual Shield for the winner of the ‘Rescued Dog’ class.
Skip spent the first year of his life tied up with little or no access to the outside world. Thanks to his devoted owner he now has a wonderful carefree life and is bursting with fun.

✨Modality Monday ✨ Every Monday, we post about the different modalities and treatment approaches we take here at All Creatures. This Monday we’re again talking about our specialist dog grooming service, and want to tell you a little more about it. We have a hydraulic bath that allows for an easy step up, but for dogs that struggle even with that, we use a ramp (as demonstrated by Bosun). Similarly, our hydraulic grooming table goes as low as 25cm -one of the lowest table heights in the industry! This means that there is less exertion placed on the dog, and the dog can then be raised to the relevant height without having to climb or be lifted. What service do you offer? Regular grooming is essential for your pet’s health and wellbeing, as it keeps the skin and coat clean and free from mats and knots that might cause soreness or itchiness. It also allows us an opportunity to give your pet a thorough check for lumps, bumps or anything out of the ordinary that might need veterinary attention - things you might not normally notice if they’re covered by fur! General grooming is straightforward, and should be enjoyable for your pet, but some animals may be too sensitive, reactive or sore to be brought into the high-energy, noisy environment of a bustling grooming salon. We offer one-on-one service for your pet, and can schedule a time that best suits you - for particularly nervous dogs, we can advise you as to which times are especially quiet at our clinic in Little Island. Our aim is to provide a gentle, kind approach to grooming in a supportive and peaceful environment. In particular, our specialist service and gentle handling methods are suited to animals that are suffering from age-related, painful conditions, such as osteoarthritis, or from chronic musculoskeletal issues that impede mobility. Like many collies, Bosun is a little bit cow-hocked - a condition common in working sheepdogs, as it was believed that external hip rotation improved a dog's ability to turn quickly. We're working on some exercises to help improve pelvic limb alignment and awareness. Here he is trying out some staggered cavaletti with moral support from his brother, Skipper!
