Spot is a 14 year old Collie who was referred to us last week all the way from Castletownbere after an unknown trauma. X-rays showed that she had sustained a coxo-femoral luxation of her right hind limb.(dislocated hip) 🦴

The hip was reduced (put back in place) under anaesthesia prior to surgery and a hip toggle was performed to allow the hip to heal.
The hip toggle is an open reduction and stabilisation technique for the management of traumatic luxation of the coxofemoral joint.

Spot was discharged from hospital today (with her lovely new haircut🥹) and we are sure she is delighted to be home with her family on the farm.✨
This older lady was an absolute star patient and we wish her a Speedy recovery🥰

Poor little Coco was involved in an unfortunate accident that caused a nasty break of her front leg🤕 This type of fracture is called a Monteggia fracture!
As a result, she needed to have surgery to repair this very painful injury! Her fracture was reduced (bones aligned) and fixed using plates and screws! 🦴
She then needed to have a spica splint placed to immobilise her leg and help it heal!
Fortunately, after lots bandage changes and rest Cocos fracture is healing up beautifully!
She is now splint free and walking very comfortably on her once injured leg🥹
The first picture shows Cocos fracture when we first saw her, the second X-ray is straight after surgery and the last X-ray is now 6 weeks later!
Also in the comments is a video of Coco walking with ease on her leg✨
Coco was so brave all through her surgery, hospitalisation and recovery and a big well done to Coco and her lovely owners for all their hard work and patience during her rehabilitation❤️

A HUGE thank you to Anne Cleary and Linda from the charity Cat Action Trust who delivered each member of staff their own individual presents yesterday, you are too kind and we appreciate you so much🙌🏻😻
Cat Action Trust are an amazing volunteer run charity with the main aim of reducing the number of unwanted cats/ kittens by the method of Trap/ Neuter/ Return. Our little Mocha also came from this super charity! ✨
We have had the pleasure of working with Cat Action Trust Cork members since our opening in April helping to treat and neuter cats in their care!
We are looking forward to working with you again in the new year!😸

An unusual patient today!
Look at those ears🥹 want to hear some fun facts about chinchillas??✨

Chinchillas can have 50-60 hairs per hair follicle making them super soft!
Fur slip is a chinchillas natural defense against predators, they release a clump of hair to get away from threats, this can make them a tricky patient and we need to try and eliminate stress so this doesn’t happen!💖
Chinchillas usually sit on their haunches and use their front paws to eat their food, which is very cute🥹
Chinchillas need dust baths to help eliminate dust and moisture from their coat to keep it nice and soft!

I think we can all agree that chinchillas are adorable and it was a pleasure to treat this little one today🫶🫶

This beautiful little bean, Jackie O, had some retained deciduous (baby) teeth which were giving her a very shark-like smile! 🦈
She had her extra teeth surgically removed today to minimise any future issues from developing. In her pre-surgery photo, you can see the accumulation of dirt and debris which had already started to affect the adult tooth, this has happened just in a few months!
Also pictured below are two teeth: an incisor (little front tooth) and a baby canine (fang) tooth. Look how long those roots are! Due to so much of the tooth sitting within the bone and out of view, it’s crucial to x-ray these teeth to make sure everything is removed properly. After the extraction, we always surgically close the area to minimise pain, promote healing and help prevent infection.
Despite her small size (just over 2Kg!), Jackie was very brave for her procedure today and we wish her a very speedy recovery! As with any tiny toy breed, we recommend very frequent dental checks and are so looking forward to welcoming this lady back soon! 💖

🐾 Age is just a number, not a disease🐾
Many are anxious to put their geriatric animals under a general anaesthetic, but we have come a long way in advancing techniques to make procedures safer for our older patients🫶

Painful dental disease is the most common welfare issue affecting senior pets, and it is sadly a contributing factor to heart, kidney and liver disease, dementia and severe chronic pain.
Even with severe dental pain, patients will continue to eat despite being severely uncomfortable! 🫨🫨

This 16 year old handsome man Archie presented to us with a swelling on his face.
On examination it was clear Archie had severe dental disease even though he was still eating and going about his daily activities, unfortunately there wasn’t any teeth we were able to salvage due to severe disease and infection so we had to extract all of his teeth!🫨

Archie should be feeling much more comfortable after his procedure as his painful and infected teeth have now been removed!✨
See the comments below for video of the infection in one of Archie’s teeth, but be warned it’s a little gruesome!🥴

Wishing Archie a speedy recovery💖💖

Handsome man Joey presented to us with a very very sore leg🥲
On the first X-ray we could see that Joey had a fracture of the left tibia!🫨

Joeys leg was fixed with a plate and screws and was doing so well after surgery he went home the following day for recovery and cage rest!

Today he came in for his 6 week post op X-ray and everything is looking great! 💖
As he is only a puppy and very high energy, his owner did a super job with his recovery and we are all so happy with him😍

We lost this special friend recently, Hatchi was a client of our vets for a very very long time.
He always came running in the door, without hesitation wagging his tail and saying hello to everyone🫶
He was a very special dog that will be missed by us dearly❤️
A special thank you to Shelia for the lovely card, thank you for trusting us to care of your amazing friend🫶

✨Sisters that get spayed together, stay together🤪✨
These cuties Lexi and Sky joined us last week for their spay!
Getting your dog spayed can be a big decision for an owner but there are many benefits💖
🐾Eliminating risk of unwanted pregnancies
🐾Lower mammary cancer risks
🐾Elimination of diseases of the uterus (like pyometras: infection of the uterus)

We provide both traditional spay and laparoscopic spay in our hospital, contact 0212028090 if you have any questions🐶

Fun fact: Lexi and Sky are in fact litter mates! They are Cavapoos but clearly one got the “Cava” for cavalier and the other got the “Poo” for poodle😂
