I have been asked by a friend of mine to help with the rehoming of his 16mth old male Bernese mountain dog. Lovely temperament, comes from a family home with other animals and is fully vaccinated. Will only be rehomed to a 5 star home with an enclosed area and a home check will be done before hand. Needs to be an active family as this dogs need a lot exercise. Reason for rehoming is work commitments.

If anyone is interested in rehoming this dog, they can contact me on 0872368386. Cheers.

Hi folks, just a heads up.

If your dog has been vaccinated at the same time yearly but for some reason skips a year, you have to start that procedure from scratch again. It's a 5 week process before the dog is safe for kennels. A booster like every other year is not sufficient. We've just had to turn away 2 dogs as it wouldn't be safe for them our the other boarders.

Please check that your vet cards are up to date.

🐕💕🎉 Update on dear Rua....

The wonderful Rua went to his new loving home this morning. A lovely couple came to the kennels yesterday evening and spent time with him, and returned today to take him home. While yes there is a bit of work and time needed, they both agreed that Rua was the dog for them. To say I was sad to see Rua go is an understatement but I know that he will be getting a second chance at life and happiness that he truly deserves. I Think we were both getting a bit attached to one another.

I wish Rua and his new owners all the very best in the future. 🐾🐕.... and Thank you for giving this beauty a chance.

I would also like to thank each and every one of you for the comments and shares. You all played a part in his rehoming. 👏👏

Pics will follow after he gets time to settle in.

Regards, Mickey.

Hi everyone..... meet Rua 🐕🐾🩷

Every so often one of these situations crops up and it did again a couple of weeks ago.

Firstly no negative comments as this is hard enough on everyone involved.

Dear Rua was meant to go and meet the dreaded needle, in other words....be euthanized. I'm not going to go in to all the details but I am going to highlight his personality. Ruas previous owners loved him very very much and went out of their way to make it work but unfortunately they seen little signs that they weren't comfortable with. After having the dog assessed by two trainers they confirmed they had done all they could do regards training. Rua was also assessed by a vet and they suggested euthanasia as they felt it was an accident waiting to happen. And with a baby in the house it wasnt worth the risk.

Rua was then given a lifeline in Donegal but unfortunately it didn't work out. He was stressed after travelling quite a distance and when he arrived he wasn't given sufficient time to be introduced to his prospective new home and the surroundings....as the new owner agreed themselves. Ruas potential new owner wanting to move him from one room to another reached down over him and took him by the collar, which any doggy person knows you don't do to a strange dog, and so he nipped her on the leg to get away.

I was notified about the situation and went to assess the dog. I realised after speaking to the people and watching the dogs behaviour, letting the dog come and check me out that there still may be hope for him. I put him on a lead and took him outside for a walk. When I asked the question "what was going to be his outcome? The response was... Unfortunately it was going to be euthanasia. I couldn't watch that happen Rua so he came back to the kennels with me.

I'm hoping the outcome of this scenario is going to be a positive one where yes Rua needs time to adjust and settle in. He has mouthed me once or twice in the kennels but as soon as I command "NO" he stops. He's a typical cocker spaniel, playful and loves running about.

🐾So..... Rua is looking for his forever home.

For obvious reasons he will not be rehomed to a family even though he has never bit a child. Ideally Rua would be suited to someone who has knowledge of the breed and who has time and patience to give him guidance, bring the goodness out of him and somewhere he can run freely in a secure environment. He's only 2 years old, fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. He would be a great candidate for agility courses as he is super smart. A similar case to what I had a few years back, the same breed and he ended up working in one of the UK airports.

Sorry for the long post. Hopefully someone who can take Rua through his next chapter will see this post and get in touch. A home check will be carried out before rehoming.

Please share 🙏🐾🐕

Our Story

Hi and welcome. My name is Mickey Forde and I am the proprietor of Lakeside boarding kennels and cattery. I have been involved in animal welfare in County Donegal for a number of years and therefore I have an insight as to what kind of care and attention customers appreciate for their beloved pets when they are on vacation. My dream has always been to open a state of the art boarding facility in my home county of Donegal. Our aim is to provide a happy and stress free environment, with the care and attention to suit, so you can leave your much-loved pet with complete peace of mind.
