⚠Winter Hazards⚠
With winter definitely upon us, there are many things that can be hazardous for your pets during the winter period. Here are our top tips for keeping your pets safe and happy:
❄Frozen Water Sources: Ponds, lakes, and other water sources may
freeze over in winter. However, the ice may not be thick enough to
support your pet's weight, posing a drowning risk. Keep pets away
from frozen bodies of water.
❄Indoor Heaters: Space heaters, fireplaces, and radiators can be
dangerous if pets get too close. They risk burns or starting fires by
knocking them over. Supervise your pet around heat sources or use
barriers to keep them at a safe distance.
❄Holiday Decorations: Festive decorations like tinsel, ribbons, and
glass ornaments can be enticing but dangerous to pets. They may
cause choking, blockages, or injury if chewed or swallowed. Keep
decorations out of reach.
❄Holiday Foods: Winter holidays often involve rich foods and treats
that can be harmful to pets, such as chocolate, nuts, and fatty meats.
Keep human food away from pets and educate clients on the
importance of pet-safe treats during celebrations.
❄Cold Weather Exposure: Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures
can lead to hypothermia or frostbite in pets, especially those with
short fur. Limit time outside, provide warm shelter, and outfit your pet
with coats or jumpers when needed.
❄Antifreeze Poisoning: Antifreeze, commonly used in cars during winter, is highly toxic
to pets but has a sweet taste that attracts them. Even a small amount can be deadly.
Keep it stored safely and clean up spills immediately.
❄De-Icing Salts: De-icing salts can irritate pets' paws and be toxic if ingested. After
walks, wipe your pet's paws to remove any residue and consider using pet-safe ice
melts.
❄Decreasing Daylight: As daylight hours shorten, it's essential to consider visibility
during walks. Ensure you and your pet are visible to motorists by using reflective gear or
accessories.

If you are ever in doubt about any of the above, please contact us for advice 🐶⛄

As the temperature drops, it's important to keep our furry
friends warm and cosy ❄️🥰
Here are some essential tips to
ensure they stay comfortable during the chilly season:
⛄Bundle Up: Train your dog to wear a well-fitting jumper
or jacket for warmth during walks or outdoor play.
⛄If there's deep snow, keep them on a lead to avoid hidden
dangers like frozen water or deep holes
⛄Limit Outdoor Time: Keep your cat’s outdoor
adventures short in freezing or snowy conditions to
protect their paws and ears from frost damage
⛄Create a Cosy Spot: Make sure they have a soft, warm
bed indoors where they can curl up and relax
⛄Keep the Indoors Toasty: Ensure your home is
comfortably heated and offer extra blankets for snuggles

This is beautiful Maisie showing off her winter coat and snood enjoying the snow on her holidays in Poland ❤

Time to show off those winter-ready looks!❄️

Today is World Diabetes Day! 🐾🐶🐱

Just like humans, our furry companions can
develop diabetes too. Pet diabetes occurs
when the body can’t properly produce or
utilise insulin, leading to elevated blood
sugar levels. Early detection is key to
managing this condition and ensuring your
pet lives a happy, healthy life.

Some of you might recognize Bella from our Laytown Clinic. Bella is a 4 year old French Bulldog that one of our nurses adopted when she was diagnosed with Diabetes when she was 5 months old. Bella was extremely unwell but with the correct diet and treatment with twice daily insulin injections she is thriving and living her best life ❤

Some signs to watch for include increased
thirst, frequent urination, unexplained
weight loss, reduced activity/feeling tired,
and increased appetite. If you notice any of
these symptoms, book an appointment with
us right away.

Due to an increase recently in lost dogs being handed into us we have decided to highlight the benefits of microchipping your pets.
A microchip identifies your pet as belonging to you. It contains a unique reference number that links to your details as an owner, stored on a central database.
🐶 If your pets gets lost one quick scan of its chip will provide your details and a phone call later, your pet is back with you where thy belong.
🐱 If your pet is stolen the microchip database can mark your pet as 'stolen', so when a practice, kennels or other places scan their microchip they can search to see if they have been reported as lost or stolen.
🐾 It is a legal requirement for all dogs to be microchipped in Ireland.

Please be sure that your pets microchip details are up to date. Pop in and ask one of our nurses to scan your pets chip and check it is registered to you.
Unfortunately, we get a lot of lost pets handed in with their microchips registered to the breeder. Please please be sure the microchip details are correct so your pet can be reunited with you if you are ever in the awful situation where your pet is lost ❤
