Promoting good gut health is essential to prevent nutritional deficiencies in foals which can lead to developmental disorders and can impact long term health and soundness.
There are significant growth demands on foals during the first 5 months of life, and they need to be able to absorb nutrients to fulfil their potential. Foals are also receiving a lot of nutrients from the mare’s milk, so supporting milk production in the lactating mare is critical.
Ask your vet about digestive health in foals and how complementary feed supplements can optimise gut health.

Gut health in foals is essential to prevent nutritional deficiencies in foals, there are several ways to promote gut health.
🐴 Appropriate management and cleanliness of the foal’s environment can help limit exposure to harmful pathogens and encourage their gut microbiota to develop without any negative impacts
🐴 Supporting quality colostrum production with appropriate feed management and digestive health in the mare to provide for the foal
🐴 Consider complementary feeds that target support of the microbiome for the mare and foal.
Speak to your vet about how complementary feed supplements can optimise gut health.

With foaling season getting underway, diarrhoea in foals is one of the most common issues both vets and horse owners encounter during this time. As newborn foals have a naive immune system, it makes them more susceptible to gastrointestinal diseases caused by harmful environmental pathogens. The foal’s gut microbiome is not fully established from birth, and its development is influenced by several factors including:
🐴 Mare’s microbiome
🐴 Colostrum the foal receives in the first 24 hours of life. Colostrum should contain high levels of IgG which are essential for the health of the newborn foal and can help limit the risk of diarrhea in young foals
🐴 Nutrition
🐴 Environment
Ask your vet about digestive health in foals and how you can support your foals digestive health.

⭐️Lactofoal⭐️
Lactofoal is a special foal milk formula which can be fed to orphan foals, or in the event of inadequate lactation in mares. The Lactofoal formula is adapted to the specific needs of the foal: protein and fat levels specific to the equine species; optimal protein quality; supply of pro- and prebiotics. It comes in powder form which dissolves optimally in water. As the foaling season approaches, consider having a bucket of Lactofoal available.
Talk to your vet about Lactofoal or send us a DM to find out more.

⭐️ Immunofoal ⭐️
Foals are born without immune defences. It is the mothers colostrum ingested during the 1st 12 hours of life that provides foals with their 1st antibodies (IgG), which will protect them during the 1st 2-3 months of life. Orphan foals or foals unable to suckle, are not the only ones who may require additional IgG intake. If the mare’s colostrum is of poor quality, it may make the foal more vulnerable as their own immunity develops.
Immunofoal is designed to provide additional nutrition support for newborn foals requiring immunoglobulin G (IgG). It can be kept on hand in case of emergencies during the foaling season but can also help to maximise the immune defences of high value foals by giving one bottle on the day of the foals birth.
Ask your vet about Immunofoal or send us a DM to find out more.

As the foaling season gets underway, we would like to share with you some information on products we feel are essential for the foaling season. High quality nutrition is proven to increase immunity and optimise the foal’s developmental growth.
🐴 Lactofoal
⭐️ In the case of an orphan foal, insufficient lactation of the mare, it is essential to have milk formula available.
⭐️ The formula is adapted to the specific needs of the foal: protein and fat levels specific to the equine species; optimal protein quality; intake of pro- and prebiotics.
🐴 Immunofoal
⭐️ Immunofoal is an essential product to have on hand during the foaling season in case of emergency.
⭐️ You can also maximise the immune defences of high-value foals by giving one bottle of Immunofoal on the day of the foal’s birth.
🐴 Bonutron Start
⭐️ With its 17 nutrients, it is an ideal formula to support the young foal in its first weeks of life.
⭐️ Its formula is distinguished by its Vitamin A and D3 intake and its high concentration of copper and zinc. Copper and zinc are two micro-nutrients that are essential for bone metabolism.
🐴 Bonutron Stud G1-L6
⭐️ Designed to cover the increased needs of pregnant and lactating mares. Enriched with calcium and vitamin D for optimal growth of the unborn foal and milk production.
⭐️ It is recommended to start the product in late gestation from the 9th to the 11th month when fetal development is at its peaks.
⭐️ Continue its use throughout lactation to ensure nutritional demands are met during milk production.
🐴 Precision Microbes Horse and Foal
⭐️Precision Microbes Horse and Foal helps to aid better digestive health when used long term.
⭐️The health of your foal’s gut flora is fragile and can be easily disrupted.
🐴 NoBACZ Navel

⭐ Introducing NoBACZ Navel a new innovative product that quickly dries the navel ⭐
NoBACZ Navel contains ethanol, alongside a natural-coloured resin, forming a non-colonisable, waterproof barrier. For proper navel care, ensure full coverage of the umbilicus up to the body wall. Dipping is recommended for 360° coverage; if dipping, submerge the entire umbilicus and press the container against the foal’s body. If spraying, cover the full length of the umbilicus, including where it meets the stomach wall.
Ask your vet about NoBACZ Navel or send us a DM to learn more.

07/01/2025

Horses naturally graze throughout the day, producing saliva to help buffer stomach acid. Modern feeding practices, where horses are often fed two or three meals in stables, can lead to gastric ulcers, colic, and stress-related behaviours. To mimic natural grazing, it’s best to feed horses forage every 6-8 hours. Since this may not be practical for all yards, slow feeders can help extend eating time between meals.
Feeding schedules should prioritise smaller, frequent meals, especially when feeding large amounts of concentrates, to prevent digestive issues like colic. When possible, feed hay before concentrates and offer hay ad lib to keep horses occupied longer.
Group feeding, can pose challenges such as dominant horses overeating and submissive horses not getting enough. It’s important to group horses by nutritional needs. Individual feeding ensures each horse receives a personalised feed.
Precision Microbes complementary feed supplement is a mixture of aromatic herbs that are lactic acid fermented with a special blend of lactic acid bacteria. It is specifically designed for long-term use to support the gut microbiome and optimise gut health necessary for forage digestion and overall digestive health. Nutritional supplements are not a substitute for a well-balanced diet with adequate forage and optimal feeding practices.
Ask your vet if you can make any improvement in your horse’s nutritional management and ask if Precision Microbes is right for your horse or pony.

It’s cold out ❄️🥶 Makes sure you wrap up over the next couple of days. Here our some of our tips for caring for your horse during the cold snap.
Most horses cope well in cold weather, but you may need to consider additional care. Some horses might need support like rugs, additional forage so carefully consider each horse’s needs.
🐴 Check daily for signs that your horse may be cold 🥶 If your horse is cold to touch you may need to consider a rug or an heavier rug. It may not be necessary to rug your horse. Research has shown that over-rugging can cause your horse to become hot, sweaty and damp, which can cause infections and rug rub. If you do rug your horse, check whether they are too warm.
🐴 Consider feeding additional hay. One of the ways horses will keep themselves warm is by grazing more. By digesting the fibre in their diet horses generate heat for themselves.
🐴 Provide a constant supply of water. It is important your horse has clean water that isn’t frozen at all time’s. Horses tend to drink less in winter which increases their risk of impaction colic. Putting out warmer water can help ensure your horse is drinking enough.
🐴 Finally assess your horse’s body condition regularly. It’s natural for horses to lose a little weight over winter compared to warmer months. However, if they are dropping a significant amount of weight, it may indicate they are not able to regulate their own temperature or have a health condition.

Speak to your vet if you have any concerns. Do you have any tips to share. Let us know in the comments ⬇️
