2๏ธโฃ0๏ธโฃ2๏ธโฃ3๏ธโฃ has been exceptional year of change, learning and growth through challenges!
Professionally, this year Iโve made the leap to solely focus on zoological companion animals (exotics) only made possible by joining @veterinaryspecialistsireland ๐ Iโve continued to develop my exotic animals skills with surgical and endoscopic training and advanced certificates.
Personally, Iโve experienced the joy of being a dada to our happy little woman, Lรญath, learning to crawl then walk and now RUN!
Couldnโt be more excited to see what 2024 has in store for the exotics service at Vet Specialists Ireland as we expand and provide only the very best care for all species ๐ฐ๐น๐ญ๐ธ๐ท๐ฆ๐ค๐ ๐๐ข
โHoppy-ingโ into the new week with one of my favourite cases over the last few months. ๐ Hoppy is a lop rabbit who was rescued by @stannescityfarm He has been with them for a few years but recently we discovered he was having issues with a large amount of discharge coming from his left nose.
After initial medical treatments failed @veterinaryspecialistireland came to the rescue and helped us with a skull CT โข๏ธfor Hoppy. This was so important as it gave us nearly all the information we needed to make a diagnosis.
I discovered that Hoppy had unilateral chronic rhinitis (or an infection in his nose) secondarily to a serious apical root abscess of his left maxillary cheek teeth. These are his teeth on the upper left side of his mouth located just below and behind his eye.
The CT again came into use to help decide a surgical approach to removal ALL of Hoppyโs diseased left cheek teeth through a retro-oral approach removing the zygomatic arch (or bone just below his eye). We needed to remove all of his teeth as they were fused or ankylosed together from the periapical abscess. As a part of this surgery, I was able to flush the pus from his nose from the same surgical site and avoided the need to perform a rhinostomy! ๐
He was eating ๐ฅฌ within hours after his procedure and his respiratory issues resolved immediately as well.
I left this wound open to drain and heal by second intention. Rabbits ability to thrive continues to amaze me as you can see the progress of this wound close over weeks and months. I did go back in to Hoppyโs mouth a few weeks after to flush some of the food material stuck in the maxillary space.
He will continue to get check ups to monitor his teeth as dental issues are often progressive but for the last 10 months Hoppy has been doing amazingly well ๐
Lastly, a sincere thanks to @rabbitdentist for his mentorship and guidance managing this case.
