Have you wondered what breeding pedigree dogs is all about? It starts with knowing the basics and mechanics of what responsible breeding is all about.

Here is Part 1, of some things to look for when visiting the breeder to see the pups. You must visit the home of the breeder and never ever buy a puppy without having seen the home environment the puppy was raised in. Responsible breeders will not have an issue with you visiting, as it also gives them the opportunity to get to know you and see if you are suited to owning one of their pups.

For more information, check out this FCI e-booklet, which aims to give clear and thorough knowledge on Why you should choose an NCO breeder and other many more valuable aspects regarding this critical topic.

Published in 4 languages, more information about this topic is available from the complete booklet via the following links:

Beyond the Show Ring: The GDAI Commitment to Health & Ethics for Every Great Dane! 📢

At the Great Dane Association of Ireland (GDAI), our passion for this magnificent breed goes far deeper than ribbons and titles. We believe that every Great Dane, whether destined for the show ring or simply to be a cherished family pet, deserves the chance at a long, healthy, and happy life. That's why our members uphold rigorous ethical standards and participate in essential health testing.

🐾 What GDAI Members Do (and Why it Matters to YOU!):

Comprehensive Health Screening: Our members are committed to testing their breeding dogs for prevalent health issues that can affect Great Danes. This typically includes:

Hip & Elbow Dysplasia: To reduce the risk of debilitating joint problems.
Cardiac (Heart) Health: Great Danes can be prone to certain heart conditions, so regular cardiac screening (like echocardiograms by a specialist) is crucial to identify and avoid passing on genetic predispositions.
Eye Conditions: Testing for hereditary eye diseases.
Thyroid Function: Checking for thyroid issues.
Canine Neck Myopathy (CNM): A hereditary neurological condition affecting muscle function, often diagnosed in younger dogs. Genetic testing helps breeders make informed decisions to avoid producing affected puppies.
Laryngeal Paralysis (LEMP): A condition affecting the larynx (voice box), leading to breathing difficulties. Genetic testing for LEMP helps members breed away from this progressive disorder.

Why is this important for PET OWNERS? Because these tests help reduce the likelihood of your beloved companion developing costly, painful, and heartbreaking health problems later in life. It means less worry, fewer vet bills, and more joyful years together!
Ethical Breeding Practices: GDAI members adhere to a strict code of ethics that ensures:

Responsible Breeding Age: Bi***es and dogs are only bred when mature enough to ensure physical and mental readiness.
Appropriate Breeding Frequency: Bi***es are not overbred.
Sound Temperament: Breeding dogs are assessed for stable, friendly temperaments, crucial for Great Danes as family companions.
Support for Puppy Buyers: Providing health guarantees, comprehensive puppy packets, and lifelong support.
Why is this important for PET OWNERS? An ethically bred puppy comes from parents with good temperaments, ensuring a well-socialized, confident, and manageable family member. You'll also have a responsible breeder as a resource throughout your dog's life.
🌿 Why This is Vital for Breed Preservation:

These practices aren't just about individual puppies; they're about the future of the Great Dane breed itself!

Combating Genetic Diseases: By identifying and carefully selecting against genetic predispositions to disease, we actively work to reduce their incidence in future generations, strengthening the breed's overall health.
Maintaining Breed Type & Temperament: Responsible breeding ensures that the distinctive characteristics and wonderful temperament of the Great Dane are preserved, preventing detrimental exaggerations or loss of essential qualities.
Ensuring Longevity: Our goal is to ensure Great Danes remain healthy, functional, and majestic for generations to come, allowing future enthusiasts to experience the joy of living with this incredible breed.
Choosing a GDAI member breeder means choosing a partner committed to the health, welfare, and longevity of your Great Dane. It's an investment in a healthier future, for your dog and for the breed.
We do not endorse our members for breeding purposes but we do highlight our members who carry out health testing at the link below.

Merlin is looking for his forever loving Family home. He is 3 and a half years old, neutered, playful and sweet natured with a great personality. His owners unfortunately have repeatedly been denied planning permission on their land and are living in a small dwelling with an ever growing family. He is good with children and other dogs.
