A day in the life!
Meet Sam, who recently visited us to be neutered. This is a routine surgical procedure to sterilise an animal and can be done from six months of age.
Sam had an early start with no breakfast (😱) as he had to fast for surgery and was admitted at 7:30am. He was weighed that morning to calculate the anaesthetic drugs required. Sam had his surgery under a general anaesthetic and recovered very well. He will come back for a wound check in three days and have his stitches removed after ten days. 🩵

Antifreeze is extremely dangerous to cats. Most antifreeze solutions are based on a product called ethylene glycol.
All animals (including humans) are susceptible to ethylene glycol poisoning, but cats are more susceptible than most due to differences in their metabolism. These differences mean that even a very small amount of ethylene glycol ingested can be fatal or cause severe kidney damage.
We have received reports of cats suffering from kidney failure linked to antifreeze poisoning in the Rathfarnham area. Please be vigilant of your pets and take the necessary precautions when using antifreeze. If you suspect your cat has ingested antifreeze seek immediate veterinary attention.

Tom and his daughter Doireann discussed cardiology at our Open Day on the 15th of October. Their dog, Smokey Joe, was a perfect patient for visitors to see how a heart is examined with ultrasound or how murmurs are detected. Our fluoroscopy unit, a type of xray, was set up to allow guests to see images of the balloon valvuloplasty procedures we performed over the summer.

At our Open Day, William talked guests through both routine surgeries such as neutering, and also discussed laparoscopic surgeries such as a laparoscopic spay. An array of surgical instruments were laid out for visitors to see how surgeries are set up. Sadie, a lovely young Labrador, enjoyed having a look inside the theatre but soon got bored of all the chatting!

Ralph, one of our nurses dogs, recently visited us for dental treatment. A dental procedure includes a thorough examination, teeth cleaning, and polishing to remove the tartar and plaque that causes periodontal disease. If left untreated, infection and inflammation will occur in the surrounding gum tissue and cause pain, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss.
