Ensuring your dog's safety while out for a walk is crucial. As this month is Walk Your Dog Month, here are some helpful tips to keep both you and your pet safe... 🐾

🦮 Make sure your dog is attached to a well-fitting harness and lead. A harness is often safer than a collar as it evenly distributes pressure and avoids strain on their neck.

✨If you're walking early in the morning, during the evening, or in low light, wear reflective gear such as a vest or a jacket with reflective strips, and make sure your dog has a light-up collar or reflective lead. This will help other pedestrians and drivers see you both.

🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️ Stick to quieter streets or parks with minimal traffic. High-traffic areas pose more risks to your dog's safety.

🐕 Always keep your dog on a lead when walking in areas where they might come across other dogs, wildlife, or traffic. If you do let your dog off the lead, make sure it's a safe, enclosed area where they can run free without any risks.

The holiday season is all about sharing, but when it comes to food, remember: some treats can be harmful (or even life-threatening) for your pet!

While it’s tempting to give your canine companion or feline friend a taste of your delicious leftovers, certain foods can cause serious health issues.

Here’s what to avoid:

🚫 Toxic foods: Grapes, raisins, sultanas, currants, chocolate, alcohol, and onions can be dangerous (or deadly) to pets. If your pet eats any of these, contact us immediately!

🚫 Fatty foods: Sausages, crisps, and fatty leftovers (like potatoes cooked in duck or goose fat) can cause upset stomachs and digestive problems.

Instead, it's best to stick to your pet’s regular diet. Consider giving them a vet-approved treat to include them in the festive fun—without the risks! 🐾

Here are some tips to help keep your pet calm and comfortable while you host:

🛏️ Create a quiet space: Set up a peaceful area away from the hustle and bustle where your pet can retreat to if they feel stressed.

🍽️🚶‍♂️Maintain routines: Try to keep feeding and walking schedules consistent to help your pet feel more secure.

🎄It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas here at Nutgrove Veterinary Hospital! 🎄 Please note that we will be open tomorrow, Christmas Eve, from 9:30am to 12:30pm.

Hero of the Month - August Meet Chino, our Hero of the Month. Chino was diagnosed with a heart murmur by our colleagues in Moy Veterinary Hospital in Ballina, Co Mayo.Chino then came to us for further investigations and it was found that he had a condition called Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). Using our practices fluoroscopy unit, our team performed a procedure called a vascular occlusion. This minimally invasive procedure involves placing a catheter into the femoral artery in the hind leg. Through the catheter, a device called a vascular plug is passed up through Chino's aorta and into his heart.Chino made a smooth and rapid recovery from his anaesthetic and was soon looking for his dinner! The team at Nutgrove Veterinary Hospital would like to thank our colleagues in Moy Veterinary Hospital, Chino's owner Charlene, and Ann Masterson and her team in Abbott Laboratories.We wish Chino a long and healthy life. ❤️‍🩹

Thank you for your generosity during our Honey Appeal! A total of €1000 was raised and divided equally between Médecins Sans Frontières and UNICEF.
