"Leave it" intro with Ody! 🧡🐾
Resisting the temptation of food on the ground is haaaaard! (when you're a dog 🤣)
Most "leave it" exercises involve blocking the food and waiting for the dog to "give up" before rewarding them for leaving the food.
However, some dogs might find being blocked or having access to yummies suddenly removed very frustrating.
This could lead to:
🔸️reduced interest in food - the dog may become conflicted ("can I have it?... can I not have it?...")
🔸️snatching the food/scratching or nipping - the dog may become obsessed with trying to get to the food ("better get it before the human blocks it!")
Here, Ody is learning to slow down when approaching a pile of super yummy treats because he anticipates his human will reward him with a tidbit - no social pressure, no frustration, no conflict!
This is Ody's very first practice, and we will be building on this over the next few sessions to generalise this new response to different environments and situations!

Roxy is learning she can relax on walks! Go Roxy! 🙌
How do we know what we're doing is working?
➡️ we define a clear goal, so we know what we're aiming for ("not pulling" is not enough!)
➡️ we ask the dog! Their behaviour is information
➡️ we collect data and compare it to previous observations
➡️ we look for gradual improvements
Data collection is super important as it also helps pinpoint what we need to adjust and how to do it!
After observing her behaviour under different conditions on our first walk together, I was able to make a couple of adjustments to better meet her needs. Roxy is now spending more time sniffing, her gait and posture are looser, she is better able to engage, and she is slowing down to process what's going on around her rather than darting ahead when worried.
This means a lot less pulling on the lead (happier human) and a much happier pooch ❤
It was so lovely to catch up with former clients and to meet some of Deborah's huuuuuge doggie family 🙂

"Close it!"
We hadn't done this one in a long long time, but it's a pretty clear setup so she guessed what to do straight away when she spotted the open door!

Happy international dog day from Wile E and me! 🐺🙂❤️
Round 2 of Wile E's tricks title with @domorewithyourdog
Since we filmed this she now has the new trick 'crawl' clean on a verbal cue and it has become one of her favourites (it's quite cute too)🥰
3 tips for easier walkies 🐾
➡️ location location location!
This is the most important one and the key to going for a really enjoyable walk with your dog.
Look for places that:
🔸️allow for exploration and tons of sniffing
🔸️have few distractions (know your dog and what overwhelms them)
➡️ bring food!
It doesn't have to be treats. Bring your dog's meal and a few yummy pieces.
Use your food rewards to:
🔸️ reinforce good decisions, such as engaging with you, coming back when called, coming back when you didn't call, walking by your side, ignoring passers by, etc
🔸️manage your dog's behaviour if you need to
➡️ use a longer lead!
Leads generally tend to be between 1.2 and 2 meters long. Adding a couple of meters will:
🔸️ allow your dog to reach sniffing areas without pulling, which means they can explore and get lost in their noses (and slow down!)
🔸️experience and practice walking on the lead without tension (and give you opportunities to reward that!)
🔸️give your dog have more freedom of movement and the option to move away from a spooky thing if they feel a bit worried
Our awesome students practicing relaxing on their mat during class today 😀
We reduced visual barriers as an extra challenge this week too as they've been doing really well working near each other.
Go Pooches! 🙌
I signed myself and Wile E up for a trick training program to keep us practicing more regularly and to add some cool new tricks to our repertoire.
We submitted the first 5 - she already knows them so it was an "easy peasy squeak-toy squeezy" exercise for us, but I'm not going to lie I was rusty with the old clicker during the warm up! So even if we already knew what to do it was a good thing we started with the easy stuff 😅
Looking forward to try the more complex ones we haven't done before over the next few weeks!
It's also got me thinking about doing a tricks class at @thehappydoghouse 🤔 Let me know in the comments below ⬇️ if that's something you'd be interested in! 😁

We practiced polite greetings and they did super dooper well, especially with the excitement of the daycare lady coming to their house!
Sometimes dogs just need a little bit of guidance (and hot dogs) to understand what we would prefer them to do in a given situation!
