Canine distemper is one of the most serious diseases our dogs can suffer from! 🐶 This viral infection can cause severe problems, especially in puppies and unvaccinated adults, and can cause persistent neurological issues, even after the initial disease has passed.

As vaccines can protect your dogs, we urge owners to keep their pet’s vaccination schedule up to date!
If you aren’t sure your pet is protected, give us a call 📲 today.

The Christmas countdown has already started, and although this is a wonderful time of the year, it can also bring some concerns for pet owners!

Remember to keep these away from your furry friends:

🍫 Food that contains chocolate, sweeteners (like xylitol), raisins or grapes and high fat content

💐 Plants like lilies, holly, ivy and any essential oils

🎄 Unprotected Christmas decorations

🕯️ Lit candles

We hope you have a happy and safe Christmas season! If something unexpected happens, we are always on the other end of a call or message, so don’t hesitate to contact us if you need help during the holidays.

Most owners know pets often carry external parasites like ticks and fleas, but did you know they can also transmit infectious diseases? 🤔

Ticks are not to be taken lightly as they can carry serious illnesses like Lyme disease or babesiosis. Both of these are transmitted through tick bites and can affect your pets as well as your family.

These tiny parasites are usually found on pets who go outside, but can even find themselves on those who do not, which is why it’s vital that you keep treatments always up to date!

Struggling to control parasites in your pets? We can help! Give us a call today. 📲

Welcoming an animal companion to one’s family is a wonderful experience, and nothing pleases us more than to be a part of your pet ownership journey. 🥰

Here are our top tips to keep your pets happy and healthy:

🐾 Preventative care is key, from regular check-ups and vaccinations to the selection of a nutritious diet. This means regular contact with our team, which also allows us to detect any problems at an early stage. 🔎 Talk to us to know the full advantages of preventative care!

🐾 With their health and diet needs covered, providing an appropriate environment, companionship, and opportunities for your pets to exhibit natural behaviours are essential for their well-being.

These general recommendations apply to all animals, but every pet is unique, and we’re here to help and provide you with tailored care and advice.

Feline rhinotracheitis is a disease caused by a type of herpesvirus that is exclusive to cats and that is one of the causes of cat flu, leading to of breathing and eye problems in our feline friends. It often shows up as:

🐈 Fever and depression

🐈 Sneezing and wheezing

🐈 Persistently runny nose and eyes

If you spot any of these, don’t hesitate to give us a call 📞! While it’s often not a serious illness, vulnerable pets like very young or elderly cats can suffer from severe complications, such as ulcers in the cornea (eye) or breathing issues that might need immediate veterinary intervention.

As we go on amazing walks with our pets during this season, they might be tempted to pick stuff up from the ground that they shouldn’t, and this might include a possibly toxic mushroom!

Wild mushrooms are a common sight during the autumn and there are many different species. Some of these are edible while some can be very dangerous if ingested and distinguishing between these two types can be challenging, as they can look very similar.

If your dog has eaten something they shouldn’t have, call us as soon as possible and, if you can, take a picture of the mushroom they ingested! 📞📷

Dogs are wonderful, joyous animals, but sometimes their timing and enthusiasm can lead to awkward situations, including:

🐶 Fetching dirty laundry in the middle of your date

🐶 Hu***ng a stranger's leg

🐶 Breaking wind in a lift

Has this ever happened to you? 🤭 What was the most embarrassing thing your dog ever did? Share with us in the comments!

What if we told you that getting your cat to the vets doesn’t have to be dramatic?

😺 Step 1: go get your cat carrier (yes, we mean now)
Making the carrier a part of your cat’s usual environment can help them feel more comfortable with it. Just leave it there in the open, and in no time, you’ll find your cat exploring it. 🔍

😺 Step 2: turn on the appeal
What about putting a blanket inside it? Maybe some toys? A tasty treat? Spraying some relaxing pheromones? The idea here is to find something that your cat likes to lure them into going inside.

😺 Step 3: outright bribery
Once they take the initiative to go inside, make sure to reward them! This can help create a positive association, making it more likely for your cat to want to repeat this behaviour.

This can be a lengthy process, but please don’t rush it. It will all be worth it when you need to bring your cat in! 🐈

Though every day is a surprise at our practice, there are some things that we see more often than others. Here’s our top 3:

💩 Diarrhoea – be it for having eaten something out of the ordinary or due to long-term intestinal disease, diarrhoea can have several causes that need to be properly diagnosed and treated.

🐾 Itchiness – this problem can often go unnoticed for some time, as some scratching is normal for pets, and it can be hard to recognise that it might be excessive until skin lesions start showing up.

⚖️ Weight loss – as weight loss tends to be gradual as well, it can also take you some time to recognise that your pet’s weight has changed. Again, there are a number of different diseases that can lead to weight loss, even without apparent changes in appetite.

If you recognise any of these signs on your pet, it’s important to investigate what might be behind them 🔍, so don’t hesitate to book an appointment with us!

Have you noticed that your dog is limping or not as keen to participate in physical activities that they usually enjoy?

Orthopaedic problems are often painful conditions that affect our pets’ mobility and significantly impact their quality of life, including:

🦴 Osteoarthritis

🦴 Fractures

🦴 Intervertebral disc disease

🦴 Hip dysplasia

🦴 Cruciate ligament and other knee injuries

Usually, we have two ways of managing these:

➡️ Conservative treatment, consisting of medication, physical therapy, diet and other complementary therapies

➡️ Surgical treatment

Treatment recommendations will vary depending on the condition and factors related to your dog, such as their lifestyle, age, and how the problem is affecting their quality of life.

Would you like to know more about a specific orthopaedic problem? Don’t hesitate to talk to our team!

If your dog has eaten something that could harm them, you don’t need to be embarrassed to tell us. Yes, we’ve retrieved plenty of unusual objects (🩲🪀) from pets’ gastrointestinal tract before. Accidents happen!

Your pet’s safety and health are our only concerns in these situations, so don’t feel like you need to hold back when talking to our team!

Does your pet...

👉 … eat a lot but seem to be losing weight?

👉 … drink too much water?

👉 … seem lethargic and not wanting to play as much?

👉 … urinate more than usual?

If you recognise these signs, your pet might have diabetes!

Also called diabetes mellitus, this disease causes cats and dogs to have insulin issues that prevent them from regulating their blood sugar. An excessive increase in blood sugar, if sustained for too long, can damage many organs, including the brain, kidneys, and eyes.

Fortunately, with the proper medication, this condition can be managed successfully. If you see any of these signs, don't hesitate to talk to us!
