๐Ÿฅช๐ŸŒž Today marks National Picnic Day, signalling the impending arrival of summer and the embrace of outdoor activities with freshly made picnics.

Imagine the joy of your dog joining in the fun on this National Picnic Day. You can prepare a dog-friendly packed lunch to include with your picnic, as many human foods are toxic or can cause gastrointestinal problems for dogs.

Ensuring your pet's safety is paramount. We recommend packing regular treats or even a frozen treat for them to enjoy slowly. Remember, when you're out in the sun with your pet, always be safe, stay in the shade, and avoid the hottest parts of the day.

From contact with other animals to exploring the great outdoors, our pets have plenty of opportunities to pick up nasty parasites daily.

Parasites can negatively affect pets' and humans' health, so it is important to ensure your pet is protected against them.

Parasites are a common occurrence, and our pets are particularly vulnerable to them. Some of the most prevalent parasites found here are:

๐ŸฆŸ Ticks: Tick bites can pass on diseases such as Lymes Disease and cause allergic reactions or infections at the site of the bite.
๐Ÿ› Worms: There is a wide variety of worms, such as tapeworms, roundworms, heartworms, whipworms, and hookworms.
๐Ÿ›Lungworm: Lungworms are potentially deadly parasites carried by foxes, slugs and snails.
๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ Fleas: Fleas affect dogs and cats and can be seen all year round. Signs that your pet may be suffering from fleas include itching, scratching and licking. You may also see 'flea dirt' โ€“ tiny dark specks that look a little like grains of soil and go red when wet.

Keep your pet protected and book your parasite treatment so they are flea-free to be themselves >> https://ow.ly/FIAo50Sfpeu

Did you know? The hot summer months create an increase in toxic blue-green algae across the UK.

This may appear as green or greenish-brown scum or foam on the water surface and contains toxins harmful to animals. It is not actually an algae but an accumulation of cyanobacteria. Dogs often swallow it by drinking water from an affected lake, river, or pond or by licking their fur after swimming. If you think blue-green algae is present, do not let your dog near it.

Unfortunately, the toxins can cause severe liver damage and can ultimately be fatal. There are currently no known preventative medicines, and prompt veterinary treatment is essential to ensure any chance of recovery.

If you are concerned, please get in touch with us immediately.

๐Ÿ˜บ Don't chip away at your cat's safety!

In a week, it will become compulsory for all cats to have a microchip. Cats must be microchipped before they turn 20 weeks old, and their owner's contact information must be accurately maintained in a designated pet microchipping registry.

Owners who fail to comply with this regulation will have 21 days to implant a microchip, or they may be subjected to a fine of up to ยฃ500.

If your cat has not yet been microchipped, book an appointment today. Microchipping increases the likelihood of being reunited with your cat if it becomes lost and provides a permanent and reliable method of pet identification.

Happy National Bee Day! ๐Ÿโค๏ธ

Let's create a buzz together by planting more flowers and supporting our local beekeepers.

Bees are essential for pollinating plants, including the fruits and vegetables we enjoy; by cultivating bee-friendly flowers in our gardens, we can offer sustenance and refuge to these vital pollinators.

Remember to be mindful of using pesticides in your garden, as they can be harmful to bees and other beneficial insects.

Do you have any bee-friendly plants in your local outdoor area or garden? We'd love to hear your favourites in the comments below.

Our Patient Care Assistants (PCAs) can undertake a multitude of roles, providing crucial support and assistance to our veterinary nurses and vets.

We are passionate about supporting our PCAs in expanding their role as they form such an integral part of our veterinary nursing teams. PCAs can grow their skills through training, which can be done either in-house or through formal qualifications. They may also support their teams through mentoring and teaching or take on leadership responsibilities. This dynamic nature of the role keeps things interesting and engaging. ๐Ÿฆฎ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿ๐Ÿข๐ŸฆŽ

Their unwavering dedication and compassion are not just qualities we value, but they also significantly contribute to the overall well-being of our patients and the smooth running of our practice. This impact is what makes this role truly rewarding. ๐Ÿ’š

If you would like to work with animals, this could be a role for you to consider.

Veterinary surgeons and Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) work together to provide holistic care for their patients โ€“ your pets.

This can include undertaking a range of diagnostic tests, administering treatments, caring for hospitalised patients, and performing minor surgical procedures.

RVNs are dedicated to continuous professional development to support their personal progression and ensure they maintain their knowledge and skills at the forefront of veterinary care, which plays a very significant role in our practice. We inspire our team members to grow, opening up various paths they can explore - here's a guide on their potential growth within the veterinary nursing field.

12/04/2024

As humans, we fret around the buzzing noise when a bee comes close; however, an inquisitive pet may seek to investigate and, as a result, could get stung. Pets seem to be fascinated by bees and wasps and can be stung when trying to play with them after rolling in the grass, rummaging in the garden or disturbing a nest.

Commonly, most stings will cause your pet some irritation and some pain, depending on where your pet has been stung and if they have been stung before. In some instances, there can be a lot of swelling, and they may continually scratch the stung area, which can result in fur loss. If your pet shows any of the following symptoms, they could have been stung:

๐Ÿ Drooling
๐Ÿ Whining
๐Ÿ Swelling
๐Ÿ Pawing at the face or mouth
๐ŸBiting at the site of the sting
๐ŸHolding up their paw (if that is where they have been stung)

If your pet has been stung near their mouth or nose, you should contact us immediately.

10/04/2024

Over the coming spring and summer months, the risk of "flystrike" increases among the rabbit population. Flystrike occurs when flies lay eggs on the rabbit, which hatch into maggots. These maggots then eat the rabbit's flesh, with often fatal results.

Due to rapid development, the best prevention is keeping your rabbit clean and in good health, feeding them an appropriate diet, carefully checking their bottoms at least twice daily and applying preventative treatments during the peak season.

Rabbits are at an increased risk of getting flystrike if they are unable to keep themselves clean due to obesity, arthritis, poor dental health or cramped, dirty living conditions.

Some of the typical signs of flystrike include:
๐Ÿฐ Digging into a corner of their living area
๐Ÿฐ A strong smell from their living area
๐Ÿฐ Open sores or visible maggots on the skin
๐Ÿฐ Lethargic and very quiet
๐Ÿฐ Not eating or drinking

Please get in touch with us quickly for further help and advice if you have any suspicions.

๐Ÿซ As much as we all love to indulge in some chocolate over Easter, it is important to remember that chocolate can be dangerous for our pets.

Chocolate poisoning is particularly common at this time of year, especially with the large amounts of Easter eggs that are readily available and sometimes hidden, too. Chocolate contains theobromine, which can be toxic to dogs and cats.

To keep your pet safe, keep all chocolate away from them and opt for pet-safe treats instead.

To learn more about the dangers of chocolate and the symptoms of food poisoning to look out for, visit our blog >>
