🐻 BEAR 🐻

This mischievous boy had too much fun at a kids birthday party last week and decided to munch into a child’s rubber fork 🍴

Bear presented to our hospital due to having vomiting and diarrhea at home so his owners knowing Bear’s character thought he may have ate something he shouldn’t have!

Once admitted we got to work on X-raying Bear’s abdomen to see what we could find!
In the images below you can see the rubber fork outlined. Unfortunately for Bear this meant we needed to perform an emergency exploratory laparotomy to go and retrieve the fork!

We reunited Bear’s owner with their missing fork and sent him home the next day after recovering with us on intravenous fluid therapy for the night!

As you can see Bear is back to himself and happy to be home with his brother Blue 🥰
He’s under strict instructions to leave the cutlery drawer alone 🫣

🌼LILY TOXICITY IN CATS 🐈

Did you know that Lillie’s are highly toxic in cats and can be fatal.

Contrary to what people believe it is not just the flower that is toxic, it is the stem the leaves and even the water in the vase that can have fatal consequences.

Meet the beautiful Fawn 🐈

Luckily for Fawn her owner knew the effects Lillie’s can have on cats! Once she spotted the pollen on Fawn’s paws and mouth she immediately brought her into the hospital 🏥

Once admitted we got to work to try and stop any of these nasty toxins having affects on her kidneys.

We sedated Fawn to wash her completely from the pollen and also hoped the sedation would induce vomiting. Although cats never like to follow any rules in veterinary so inducing vomiting is not always an easy task!

We placed an IV cannula to initiate aggressive fluid therapy to flush the kidneys.

Once Fawn was up and around from the sedation we medicated her with activated charcoal which helps to bind the toxins.

The following morning we took bloods and ran a kidney profile to see how they were coping after the ingestion of the Lillie’s. Luckily we had got her in time and their was no permanent damage.

After staying in the hospital with us on fluids for 24 hours we were happy to discharge Fawn!

We have kept in contact with Fawn to ensure she is recovering well at home🏡

So remember if you own cats and are looking to buy nice flowers let’s keep the Lillie’s in the shops and pick a different kind!

Popular Dundalk veterinary surgeon John McGuinness has retired after forty years caring for all creatures great and small.

31/03/2023

There isn’t enough words to express how grateful we all are in Avenue Vets for this man.

To us he’s not only our boss but he is our mentor and friend. He has taught us all that we know and given us the confidence to succeed.

To our lovely clients he is the man that gave their puppy his/her first vaccine or fixed their sore leg and when it was time he was there for their final breath.

John, you have saved countless lives, fixed many a cruciate ligament and helped a struggling mother give birth to her puppies.

You once told us that you may have helped us grow our wings but it’s now time for us to learn how to fly on our own.

We are determined to strive and make you proud here in Avenue Vets.

We wish you a happy and healthy retirement no man on this earth deserves it as much as you do.

From all of us here at Avenue Vets and all the animals we thank you dearly.

Lots of love,
Your team❤️

The story of Timmy

Timmy was brought into our hospital this time last year with a very unclear history.

Over the next few days we unfortunately started to see what was going to unfold into the worst case we have seen so far.

He arrived very lethargic and had a high temperature , sadly we had very little to go off in terms of his history. We took bloods which told us that he had an infection of some sort. However within 2/3 days Timmy’s skin started to peel and he was in a great deal of pain. We immediately started an intensive care plan for Timmy to try and combat his pain to the best of our ability along with some healing bandages for his skin.

Each day for poor Timmy more and more of his skin started to peel off. At this point we were questioning whether or not he had some sort of chemical burn.

Timmy went through very intensive care with us for just short of 2 months. This included round the clock pain relief along with medications to help salvage his skin.
This case was very draining on all us including Timmy. It was very difficult every morning coming in and seeing this helpless kitten in so much pain. It was too painful to even eat or drink and he had to be fed with syringe every day along with being syringed water.

Things slowly but surely started to get progressively better for Timmy with the added care from Dr.Catarina who fell in love with him and most days/weekends he was at home recovering with her. We could finally start to see the skin heal as well as seeing the little guy growing into his own playful personality.

The bond between Dr.Catarina and Timmy was beautiful to watch and we have no doubt that it helped so much in his healing and becoming the beautiful cat he is today.

Timmy will live out his life happy and comfortable with Dr.Catarina and although this case was extremely difficult mentally for all us at the hospital, seeing him now and how much he is flourishing makes it all worth it❤️

Here you can see Nurse Lynda placing an IV cannula into the marginal auricular vein! This rabbit was then going to be placed on intravenous fluid therapy 💧

Did you know cats can have diabetes?

This is Blegu a very special patient with us who comes in regularly to have glucose curves done as we try to get his recent diagnosis of diabetes under control📈

Blegu has the most wonderful pawrents who are very dedicated to his care as they play the most important role in his day to day life. Everyday, twice a day he needs to be given a subcutaneous injection with insulin along with being monitored very closely💉

Blegu was the best wee boy allowing us to monitor his glucose throughout the day without ever giving us any fuss 🐱

Symptoms to look out for 👀
🐱 Increased drinking
🐱 Increased appetite
🐱 Weight loss
🐱 Increased urination

If you think these symptoms sound familiar why don’t you book an appointment and get your precious pet checked out ☎️

🐱 FELINE FRIENDS 🐱

It is so important that our feline patients feel calm and safe when in our practice. We have a designated cat consult room filled with lovely calming pheromones and hiding places for when they get scared.

Here you can see the gorgeous Princess is very calm and loving the treats and cuddles 🥰 it’s very important we take our time with our feline patients and let them explore the room and get comfortable.

Did you know we have been awarded with a silver status for being a cat friendly clinic?🤩

Unfortunately we have sad news to report.

A wire haired terrier (white with light brown markings) has been knocked down on the avenue road towards Medebaw area and sadly is deceased.

He was a male(not neutered) middle aged. Sadly he was not microchipped and had no collar or tag.

If you think this could be your dog please get in touch with proof of ownership.

Call us on 042-9339648 between 9am-6pm or message us here.

So happy to hear our wonderful patient George has found his forever home 🏡 🐶

This is Bella, she is 11 years old and presented to us after trying many different avenues to help alleviate her pain. She got to the point where she was struggling to walk and even resting was painful for her.

We decided to try Bella on a drug called Librela which is the first injectable monthly antibody therapy to alleviate osteoarthritis pain. This was our last chance to help Bella and improve her quality of life.

In the video above you can see Bella before her injection and then after receiving her Librela injection. She could finally walk up the stairs after 18 months🤩

Bella is still receiving her monthly injection and enjoying her walks every day 🐕

If you think your pet might be suffering from osteoarthritis, please book an appointment with one of our vets so we can get your pet started on their journey to a happier healthier life!

No pet should have to suffer from chronic pain❕

Some signs to looks out for include:
〰️Slowing down on walks
〰️Slow to get up after sleeping
〰️Feeling stiff
〰️Reluctant to jump

Unfortunately a male adult black cat has been found deceased outside Louth hospital this afternoon.

He is not microchipped but definitely a well looked after cat, if you think this could be your cat you can message us here on Facebook.
