At Emlagh Lodge Veterinary Centre we occasionally need to give a blood transfusion to save a dogs life.
We are looking for canine volunteers to put their name on a list that could be called on in a time of need.
The dogs need to be between 2 and 7 years of age, be healthy and fit and over 20 kg in weight and ideally of a quiet disposition.
If you think you have a dog that fits this description and would be willing to add them to our life savers list please contact us at Emlagh Lodge Veterinary Centre

These are all types of ectoparasites or parasites that live on the outside of our pets
We see a lot of itchy pets in our clinic, very few tend to be on regular good quality ectoparasite preventative treatment
Preventing ectoparasites greatly reduces the itch on your pet and that makes them happier

🌰🌰Conkers Conkers Everywhere 🌰🌰
Horse chestnuts or Conkers are in plentiful supply this time of year and they pose a massive danger to our dogs
Conkers if swallowed can cause blockages of the digestive tract, resulting in vomiting and often require surgery to have them removed
All parts of the horse chestnut tree including the conker are poisonous to dogs. They contain a toxin called Aesculin. This toxin results in nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness and dehydration. If the toxin gets into the bloodstream then toxic shock can occur in the pet and if left untreated can cause organ damage and occasionally death
If you doubt your pet has eaten any part of the horse chestnut tree then seek veterinary attention
The number 1 cause of gastrointestinal upset and colic in horses is worms 🐎🪱 🏇
With the increase in resistance to worming treatments across all species of animal, using the right products at the right time is vital to ensure your animals are in tip top shape
At Emlagh Lodge Veterinary Centre we can design a worming regime using diagnostic testing, knowledge of worm lifecycles and worming treatments to ensure your animal is safe from gastrointestinal upset
In the photo above is a pair of pinworms found at scanning of a mare for pregnancy
Come and talk to us about your worming needs
Cats are unique creatures!!!🐈🐈⬛🐈🐈⬛🐈
While they suffer with plaque, tartar and gum disease similar to dogs, they also suffer a unique set of conditions associated with the mouth and teeth.
Feline tooth resorption is a condition where the outer wall of the cats tooth erodes away and the sensitive pulp of the tooth is exposed. This can happen in one or many teeth. There is no known cause for it, just a unique cat condition😸😸😸
Feline aids is a highly contagious virus that damages the cats immune system and leads to repeated infections. Often the first sign of this disease is bad gums and breath. The bacteria in the plaque causes gum infection and the cat cannot fight the infection due to the compromised immune system.
Cats also suffer with a syndrome called gingivitis and stomatitis complex. This is believed to be due to an over reaction of the cats immune system to plaque and bacteria. These cats typically have red inflamed gums and mouth. Occasionally all the teeth may need to be removed to give the cat relief from the infections.

Just like us a white cats ears have no natural protection against the suns harmful UV rays🌞🌞🌞
The UV rays cause damage to the skin of the exposed ears. This damage can progress to harmful and painful skin cancer. The treatment for skin cancer on the ears is surgical removal of the ears😿😿😿
Applying factor 50 sunscreen daily protects the ears, prevents skin damage and hence cancer. This helps keep our white cats healthy and happy 😸🧴😸🧴😸🧴
Scanning of mares is well underway at Emlagh Lodge Veterinary Centre.
More than 90% of pregnancy losses occur in the first 40 days following conception.
Scanning to ensure no twin pregnancies at 14 to 16 days post service is important.
A heartbeat scan at 35 to 40 days post service gives a high chance of a live foal.🐎🐎🐎
We use 2 types of scanning for heartbeats.
The first is black and white 2D ultrasound.
The image shows fluid as black and the foal is grey and oval. If you look closely in the middle of the foal you can see the heartbeat flickering.❤️❤️❤️
The second image is a colour Doppler scan. The black is fluid, the grey oval is the foal and in the middle of the foal we can see the 2 tiny heart chambers with red and blue blood flow in the separate heart chambers.💙💙💙♥️♥️♥️
We have had a number of pets in lately with worming issues.
Usually worms aren’t coming out of your pet and waving at you like this fella!!! Adult worms tend to live in the digestive tract and shed eggs in your pets poop 💩These eggs are microscopic and not detectable with the naked eye 👁
Adult pets should be wormed every 3 months, pups and kittens should be wormed monthly between 12 weeks and 6 months of age, pups and kittens should be wormed every 2 weeks until 12 weeks of age.
Any questions don’t hesitate to come and talk to us at Emlagh Lodge Veterinary Centre
