PUPPIES - The Do's and Dont's for grooming
If you have a new puppy in your life CONGRADULATIONS!! Your dogs first haircut is a big deal so i am going to include some advice to make their first experience as pleasant and stress free as possible.
1. I recommend bringing your puppy to the groomers as soon as they are old enough and fully vaccinated (Normally around 14 weeks). This will help the puppy understand the grooming experience is not that scary and will be part of their routine!
2. Familiarize your puppy with gentle handling at home. Get your puppy familiar with their paws and ears being touched. Initially they will probably pull their paws back but when they do what you want give lots of prasie and treats, its essential this is a positive experience for them. Run your hands all over their body and tail.
3. Familiarize them with the brush. DO NOT PLAY WITH THE BRUSH a lot of people think if they reward the dog by playing with the brush they will tolerate brushing their fur easier, unfortunately this is not the case. A lot of dogs come into me (young and old) that try to play bite the brush, this makes it very difficult or me to actually brush the coat! instead owners should reward the dog with treats or their favourite toy while brushing the dog to make the experience positive and enjoyable!
4. Bathing ; if you decide to bathe your pet at home, make it a positive experience by providing lots of toys and treats, give your pet breaks but most importantly do not scold them for bad behaviour!
When your puppy is old enough we will book them in for an introductory puppy 1st groom, where we will do a bath and blow dry, nail trim, ear clean and a full body brush, after this groom i will advise owners and what areas they need to work on with the puppy to achieve a happy and positive dog-groomer relationship.
