D.R. Dog Care Grooming and Training

D.R. Dog Care Grooming and Training Dog grooming, behaviour and training services by Deirdre. Founded in 2002. This process removes dander and dead old coat from the dog.

What happens when I bring my dog to be groomed?
The dog is assessed with the owner and a cut is discussed and agreed.

Factors include:
coat condition
medical conditions
temperament
breed
whether the dog sleeps indoors or outside
The weather and season
Cost

The grooming process

All dogs are washed with a choice of shampoos including Tea Tree, Natural, and Flea repellant. The

a**l glands are expressed (if requested).
The coat is blasted semi dry with the Mega Blaster. It reduces shedding and improves the condition of the coat and
They are then placed in the cabin dryer, where they can sleep and relax while luke warm air finishes drying the coat. This avoids having to use a handheld dryer on the sensitive face and feet of the dog. They are supervised constantly while in the dryer, and most dogs enjoy a nice sleep and relax!
They are then placed on the table and a silicone conditioning spray is used. This makes the cost easier to brush, repels dirt and leaves a lovely shiny silky coat. Finally the coat is clipped / scissored according to customers wishes. Nails are cut, ears plucked / cleaned and a finishing spray, such as vanilla cupcake used to freshen and condition the coat.
The owner then collects their pampered pooch ,and tries to keep them clean before their next appointment !!

Education is power- I had a conversation with the owner of an 11 month old Cockapoo who was already talking about putting him to sleep if she couldn’t solve his guarding issues. Misunderstanding the dog in front of you and not both fulfilling their genetic needs while providing a safe environment for them through humane boundaries and training is a recipe for disaster. And it’s a battle the dog rarely wins 🥹🥹

🐾 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗼 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 🐾

In recent months, we’ve seen an alarming number of surrender requests for Cockapoos and Cockapoo puppies, many with 𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀. These dogs, bred from a Poodle and Cocker Spaniel, have surged in popularity, but the rise in demand is causing serious, often overlooked consequences.

🛑 Currently, 4.9% of all ads - 23 out of 467 - on Dogs.ie are for litters of Cockapoos, making them the most advertised "breed" on the platform. These puppies are sold with a high price tag, around €500 each, drawing in buyers with their cute appearance and trendy "designer" label. But what happens when the new owners realize the reality of owning one?

💔 Breeders, especially those producing puppies purely for profit, are unlikely to take them back when the owners struggle. That responsibility falls on rescues and pounds who are left to pick up the pieces.

🐶 𝗖𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗼𝘀: 𝗔 𝗡𝗼𝗻-𝗣𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀

Despite their high price, Cockapoos are not a pedigree breed. There are significant drawbacks to choosing a non-pedigree dog, like Cockapoos. With mixed breeds, it’s often difficult or impossible to determine exactly what breed traits will dominate, making it hard to predict their behaviour and size as adults.

🧬 While the disposition of the parents can offer clues to a puppy’s temperament, in many cases, Cockapoo parentage is undocumented or unknown. This contrasts with pedigree dogs, whose medical and behavioral histories are well-recorded. With Cockapoos, health issues can be much more unpredictable.

⚠️ 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱?

Cockapoos are often bought as family pets because of their adorable looks, but their 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘁𝘀 can lead to significant 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 that many families aren’t prepared to handle. Cockapoos are a mix of two highly intelligent working breeds - Poodles and Cocker Spaniels. This leads to a unique set of challenges:

🐾 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: With strong hunting instincts from both sides, Cockapoos can become reactive and may chase small animals if not properly trained.
💔 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝘅𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆: These dogs thrive on companionship and can develop severe anxiety when left alone for long periods, often leading to destructive behavior.
😟 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀: Without proper early socialisation, Cockapoos can become fearful and reactive to unfamiliar situations, people, or other dogs.
🔒 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿𝘀: Cockapoos often exhibit 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴, a behavior linked to their hunting breed background. Both Cocker Spaniels and Poodles have instincts to protect valuable resources like food or toys. Without training and clear boundaries, these traits can escalate into possessive behaviors and even aggression.
⚠️ These behaviors, especially resource guarding, 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀. This is why many Cockapoos, despite their cute appearance, find themselves surrendered to shelters.

💡 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲: 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀

Cockapoos are rarely, if ever, ethically bred. 𝗡𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗱. Reputable breeders are dedicated to improving the health, temperament, and overall quality of their specific breed. They carefully select mates for their dogs to maintain or enhance these traits - not to crossbreed for profit.

Breeders who are committed to improving their breed follow strict guidelines, health tests, and pair their dogs based on genetics, temperament, and health. In contrast, many Cockapoos are bred without these considerations. The primary focus for these breeders is demand and profit, not the welfare of the animals or the long-term health of the breed. The results are dogs that often suffer from poor genetics or behavioral issues that could have been avoided with responsible breeding.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗲?

If people stopped purchasing from bad breeders, they would no longer profit from this cruel cycle. When people buy Cockapoos from irresponsible breeders without doing proper research, they’re unknowingly supporting an industry that cares more about money than the welfare of the animals.

✅ 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀.

Before committing to any dog, especially a "designer" breed like a Cockapoo, it’s crucial to understand their unique needs.

𝗕𝘆 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗼𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗽 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗱, 𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀.

🐾 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗗𝗼𝗴? 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 🐾

At Leitrim Animal Welfare, we’re seeing an overwhelming number of surrender requests for dogs with behavioural issues. It’s heartbreaking for the dog, stressful for the owner, and often preventable. Before you decide to buy a dog, we want to share some important advice that could save you and your future pet a lot of trouble.

𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗗𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗲 - 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲

While training plays a big role in a dog’s behaviour, it’s important to understand that every breed has natural characteristics that you often can't train out. When researching online, people often fall in love with a breed for how they look or based on limited information. Unfortunately, many discover the challenges of certain breeds only after problems arise - from energy levels that don’t suit a busy household to unexpected behavioural quirks.

𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁 - 𝗗𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸!
Here are a few things to consider:

𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀: Some breeds need several hours of exercise daily, while others are more relaxed and suited for a quieter lifestyle. If you're not able to meet those needs, behavioural issues are likely to arise.
𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Some dogs are naturally more independent, while others crave constant companionship. This matters for working families or people with busy lifestyles.
𝗚𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀: Certain breeds require regular grooming or are prone to specific health issues. Vet bills and upkeep can add up!

𝗕𝗮𝗱 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀

We are often contacted by people who buy a dog and later feel guilty because they realise the conditions the dog came from were not ideal. Poor breeding practices are often at the root of many behavioural issues, which can be extremely difficult to correct. Here are some important facts that many people may not realise:

1.𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗣𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗲𝘀: Research shows that a mother dog's stress during pregnancy can affect her puppies' behaviour long-term. Puppies born to stressed mothers are more likely to display anxiety, fearfulness, and aggression later in life. This is why it’s so important that breeding dogs are kept in calm, nurturing environments.

2.𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀: Puppies that experience pain due to untreated medical conditions (such as poor breeding practices leading to congenital issues) may develop behavioural problems. Chronic pain can manifest as aggression or fearfulness, as the dog associates discomfort with certain situations or people.

3.𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱𝘀: Puppies have a "critical period" of socialisation (typically between 3 and 14 weeks old). If they don’t have positive experiences with people, other animals, and different environments during this time, they may develop long-term fear or aggression. Bad breeders often fail to provide proper socialisation, leading to dogs who struggle in normal, everyday environments.

4.𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Dogs can inherit behavioural traits just as they inherit physical traits. Bad breeders who don’t consider temperament when breeding may unknowingly pass on traits like aggression, anxiety, or hyperactivity. This can be difficult, if not impossible, to fully correct through training.

5.𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: Puppies should ideally stay with their mother and littermates for at least 8 weeks. Early separation can cause developmental and behavioural issues, such as poor bite inhibition (learning how to control the strength of their bite) or anxiety, as they miss out on important lessons learned during those first few weeks.

6.𝗡𝗲𝗴𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲: Puppies raised in overcrowded or neglectful environments may develop "learned helplessness," where they become overly passive, shut down, or, conversely, act out aggressively. These behaviours often stem from not having their basic needs met early on.

𝗔 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀
We encourage everyone to adopt from rescues, but we understand some are set on buying a dog. If you’re going to buy, 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗴𝗼𝗲𝘀. Buying from responsible breeders who care about their dogs’ wellbeing is essential.

𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘆 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 - whether it was a bad breeder or an irresponsible situation. We want to prevent this from happening by making sure unethical breeders don’t profit from selling dogs. There are wonderful breeders out there, and they play an important role in continuing healthy bloodlines and ensuring their puppies get the best start to life. These are the breeders we want to support, and we’re here to help you find them.

𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝘂𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀
We often focus on puppy mills as a major issue, but more commonly, it's "accidental" litter. One dog can have around 8 puppies, and finding 8 responsible homes for dogs that could live 12+ years is a huge responsibility! Breeding should never be taken lightly, yet it's happening all too often. These dogs end up in rescues, adding to the pressure we face.

𝗪𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽
If you're certain about buying a dog, we're here to offer 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲, 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲. Our goal is to help you find the right breed for your lifestyle and ensure you're supporting ethical breeders. 𝗕𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀, 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲.

Please feel free to reach out to us - whether you’re unsure about a breed or need help finding the right breeder. Together, we can make a difference for dogs and the people who care for them. 🐕❤️

🚨 Shocking Reality 🚨 Ireland's poor regulatory framework has led to a €187M puppy industry. Large-scale commercial dog breeding NEEDS to end. Beyond welfare concerns, this industry is tax avoidant and causes environmental damage, disease spread, and fraud.

A centralised oversight body is crucial, but increasing oversight of local authorities is where fundamental change occurs. Streamlining a framework across all local authorities, who are currently responsible for registration, enforcement, and inspection of dog breeding establishments (DBE), would ensure uniform enforcement. As a matter of best practice, an independent regulator should be established, similar to the South Australian Dog and Cat Board.

🎉 Puppy Parents! Let’s Talk Socialisation 🐾

There’s so much confusion around what true socialisation really means for your pup! Many well-meaning efforts can actually do more harm than good. So, let’s break it down and make sure you’re on the right track to raising a calm, confident dog.

🔴 Socialisation is NOT:
• Throwing your pup into chaotic situations like dog parks or daycare.
• Letting them greet every single dog or person on walks.
• Allowing strangers to invade their space with unwanted pats or kisses.
• Forcing your untrained pup into noisy, overwhelming environments and hoping for the best.

✅ Socialisation IS about:
• Teaching your dog to interact calmly and appropriately in controlled settings.
• Showing them that ignoring other dogs on walks is perfectly fine (and actually better!).
• Advocating for your pup by telling strangers when it’s not okay to approach.
• Gently guiding them towards healthy behaviours instead of reacting with fear, aggression, or over-arousal.
• Building their focus so they see YOU as their most valuable resource.

True socialisation is about teaching your puppy how to exist calmly in the world—not pulling, panicking, barking, or lunging at every distraction. Exposure alone isn’t the magic key—guidance is everything!

The ultimate goal? A dog that stays calm, confident , and focused on you, no matter what the environment throws their way. 💕🐶
