Meet Bones ❤️🍉❤️
Bones gave his owners a real fright recently - he swallowed a tennis ball & ended up having to have emergency surgery to remove it! He’s had a rough couple of weeks, but thankfully is now out the other side, and can go have a Happy Christmas with his family 🎅🏻☺️
He can have the protective collar off today, but he likes his watermelon so much he might be sorry to lose it ! We don’t unfortunately stock these type of collars here, but they can be easily got online. Bones is really rocking the look anyway 😄🍉🥰

Meet little Charlie 🌟 He has been recently diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and has been a little trooper as we try to assess him and find his correct insulin dose. We do this by keeping him in for the day and taking blood samples throughout, to check his blood glucose levels- this is called a glucose curve 📈 Did you know our pets can be affected by many of the same diseases as we do, such as diabetes mellitus? We love giving our inpatients lots of TLC while they’re away from their pet pawrents ❤️

Brothers in Arms 😸
The lovely Mango & Kono were in for their vaccines on the weekend. While it’s not quite going to war, a visit to the vet can be stressful, so they were able to give each other moral support! They were very brave though & because we aim to keep a visit here as stress free as possible, it was a conflict free zone!

Pet of the Month 😻
The lovely Ollie was in with us today for blood tests & he was a very brave boy! Ollie has recently been diagnosed with Diabetes mellitus . Previously the only option for treatment would be twice daily injections. But there is a new oral medication for cats & he is doing very well on it, much to his owner’s delight 😺❤️

This handsome boy is Barney, and he is nearly 14 years old!! Barney is on a monthly arthritis injection, and as a result is still flying around, and is sure to go upstairs every morning to make sure everyone is awake!

If you think your senior pet is struggling to get up in the morning, not wanting to exercise as often as they used to, seems stiff or uncomfortable, make an appointment with one of our vets for an assessment and a chat about the different options for arthritis in our ageing pets.

We have so many options for managing arthritis nowadays, there’s no reason for our pets to be in pain or discomfort.

Call us on 01 287 5283 or email [email protected] to enquire.

Happy Vet Nurse Day! 🐾

Of course our nurses deserve to be celebrated everyday for the trojan work they do, but for the day that’s in it, we thought we’d give you an insight into some of what your nurses in Blacklion do everyday:
•admitting and discharging patients
•assisting in surgery
•monitoring anaesthesia
•administering IV fluid therapy
•taking blood samples
•running diagnostic tests
•taking radiographs
•descaling teeth for dental procedures
•physical examinations
•blood pressure monitoring
•reception and admin work
•phone triage
•nurse consults such as nail clips, weight clinics, parasite prevention administration
•client advice on things like training, puppy socialising nutrition and much more!

And of course, giving all of our patients some TLC when they’re not feeling the best ❤️‍🩹

Any veterinary clinic would truly not function without its nurses, and Blacklion is no different! So a big THANK YOU to all of our vet nurses, and all vet nurses everywhere, for their dedication, hard work and compassion everyday ❤️

Hello everyone, my name is Kebab! 🐈

Did you know ❓ We are an ISFM (International Society of Feline Medicine) Silver Certified Cat Friendly Clinic - stay tuned for a tour of our cat-friendly facilities! 🐾

Fun fact! About 80% of Ginger cats are male? This is due to the “ginger gene” being on the X chromosome. Because females have two X chromosomes, they would need two copies of this gene to become ginger, whereas males only need one! 🐱

Thanks to Bobby Watson in the Greystones Guide for doing such a lovely bit of research on the historic buildings in the town.

As Bobby said, Blacklion House is indeed the oldest inhabited building in Greystones. It was, we think, initially built as a coach house in 1740-60 or so. It is one of only two still existing dwellings in Greystones on the first edition ordinance survey maps, the other being Killincarrig House. The original structure is the ‘back half’ and it was extended by building the ‘front half’ in 1840 or so, we think.

It became a vet practice in 1978 when Noel Kelly and John Wilson opened Blacklion Pet Hospital. John retired in the mid 90’s and in 2003 I took over from Noel on his retirement.

We did some renovation works in 2004-2005 and invested in all the equipment needed to run a modern vet clinic. However time was taking its toll on the old lady, with her creaking at the seams and not really any more fit-for-purpose, so over the last 15 months we stripped her back and built her up again, spending over €300,000 on a very sympathetic and tasteful yet utterly modern rebuild.

We finished the last piece of the jigsaw last week when we put in a state-of-the-art infra-red heating system. We have a few bits to tidy up outside – some small painting works and new signage – but Blacklion House is now fit for the 21st century and we are proud to be the oldest, yet in many ways the most modern of its kind, building in Greystones.

Thanks goes to Michael McDaid and his team from Custom Carpentry & Construction - they did a great job. Thanks also to all our neighbours and clients for putting up with the disruption, we are grateful for your patience. And thank you to all of our team in the practice - working in a building site for this long was hard, but they were brilliant and I am so grateful to them.

I’ve worked in and seen many veterinary practices worldwide and, square foot for square foot - even though I am biased - the new Blacklion is really the nicest little vet practice I have ever been into.

Everyone is welcome to pop in for a look and a tour and later in the spring we’ll have a big open day to celebrate.
