Our first harvest of asparagus is on track for next spring.
This crop has been a labour of love as we started growing it from seed in 2020, transplanted out in November that year and we’ve weeded and tended to it with fresh compost and now we wait patiently to see if the fresh shoots will be the size of a little finger - ideal to size to start harvesting.
Who else enjoys this fresh, crisp seasonal hero?

Ah Halloween came early for us! These wee self-sown beauties were discovered in a corner of the big glasshouse (yep that’s it official name😝) that had been ignored! A perfect find!

🎃In May we made the tough decision to not grow Halloween pumpkins this year. Finding these today has wrenched our inner kids and I’m pretty sure we’ll be planting them again in 2023!!

PEA WATCH!
We are in high alert here - one of us is going to get to try the first of the season’s peas! Tension is high😜.
Anyone else a fan of peas in pod?

Garlic season is here!
We’ve pulled our first harvest of garlic and it’s amazing (if we do say do ourselves!). Easily our best yet - bulbs are plump and the flavour is rich, strong with sweet undertones.
Fresh garlic straight from the ground is called green garlic where the stems can be used as well to flavour dishes. Dice it up like onions and use in a similar way.
We’ve included our garlic in this week vegetable boxes (Message is if you’d like to find out more about our weekly vegetables) and we’ll have them at Saturday 10am-3pm.

Anyone else enjoying the brighter mornings?
We are on the countdown to Valentines- not just because we love a bit of romance but because we’ll hit the magic number of 10 hours of daylight (f🤞it is Ireland after all😜).
Ten daylight hours is magic because that’s the minimum light requirements to get our seed/seedlings off to a great start before being transplanted after expected the last frosts April/May time.
We are absolutely itching to get sowing and growing!!
What’s the first seeds you’ll be sowing?

Beware of the glass - gasshouse are not where you want be during a storm!!

We battened down the hatches on Monday and only popped in to the farm mid morning yesterday to check on things. Thankfully only a small amount of damage from Storm Barra.
Hope you are all staying warm and safe.

It’s 7°c, overcast and basically just utter ick outside. So this is a total procrastination post😉 cos I’m meant to be going out harvesting for the tomorrow.
But first I had to get my flask of hot water ready + a banana for energy.
Then my wet weather gear including the best water proof gloves (), 15 year old woolly hat and my that Raj gave me this time last year (the best biz partner and sis’n’law I gal could have).
This weather is brutal for drying out skin so I slather on a good supply of moisturiser before and mid harvest. (I’m loving range at the mo thanks to for the recommendation).
Finally my main tools for harvesting are my crop list, Bluetooth earphones for podcasts/audible, tissues and these hard core secateurs awesome for cutting through hard stems and trimming leaves.
Well I suppose there’s no excuse not to get out there now.
I look forward to seeing you tomorrow at the market 10-3ish with a lovingly harvested chemical free vegetables, herbs and honey all grown right here in our beautiful farm.

FYI fav podcast incl:

(The Food Growers Podcast)
Anyone got some other podcasts they’d recommend? (Doesn’t have to be growing related).

Blown away… literally!! The weather whipped up a blustery day at yesterday but it didn’t dampen the amazing folk, who are regulars and new faces, popping in to say hi, buy our fresh chemical free produce and share a smile. Thanks so much to you all for your continued support - it truly means so much to Raj, myself (Johanna) and our families.
Look forward to doing it all again next week - maybe without the wind 💨 Have a great week!

17/10/2021

What’s that famous line from Forrest Gump - something like ‘Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.” Well growing pumpkins is exactly the same.
We sowed over 4000 pumpkin and gourd seeds back in early May, hand-transplanted seedlings into compost and microbe rich soil in early June (🙏🙏🙏 to Team Teenagers), watered them and then left it the pollinators and Mother Nature to do the rest!!
Pumpkins naturally vine out along the ground, their big leaves stretch for the sky and form a dense sea of green - leaving no room for curious farmers to look beneath the surface. Under the chemical-free canopy, insects buzz happily from flower to flower pollinating as they go. Under the Irish sun the flowers swell into pumpkins and gourds and it’s not until the leaves start to die back late August- early September that we finally get a glimpse of their hidden bounty - pumpkins and gourds of all shapes, colours and sizes, warts and all.
It’s an amazingly magical crop to grow and equally fun to sell at this time of year.
Our pumpkins and gourds are available
- The Farm Stand Mon-Sat 10-6pm Old Dublin to Belfast Rd Julianstown A92PK53
- a small selection will be at on Saturday 23 + 30 Oct 10am-3pm
- Malahide Train Station Tuesday 19 + 26 Oct 6-7pm (our joint collection point with .ie )

School is back so new faces (more mature😜 faces) will be manning The Farm Stand @ Apple Tree Cottage Mon-Sat 10-6pm.
A massive thanks to Raj’s amazing daughters Lara and Janhavi, our nephew Murt and family friendly Connor for all they have done for our rather quaint farm stand (and market garden) over the summer. They all work tirelessly, doing some fun jobs and lots of back breaking job, and our market garden is better for it. Wishing you all a really fantastic year back at school.

Back to that farm stand … When Peter first fashioned a trailer into a farm stand, Raj and I kindly(😱) suggested that it wasn’t the image we were going for. However we had a load of farm fresh, chemical free produce to sell and it was all we had.
Well over the summer the farm stand has proved to be a bit of “rustic charm” you have all been looking for. You have loved it and our produce. We are so appreciative of the support you have all shown. A massive thank you.
As summer turns to autumn our produce will also start to reflect the change in season - more hearty goodness as well as our infamous pumpkin patch will appear just before Halloween. Keep an eye out for it all.
