🐰🥕 RABBIT AWARENESS WEEK 🥕🐰

Feeding guidelines for rabbits 🐰

A rabbits diet should compose of mainly hay/grass, as rabbits teeth are constantly growing it naturally wears down their teeth helping to prevent dental diseases and stomach issues.

Rabbits also require fresh leafy greens such as rocket, romaine lettuce and mint, as well as vegetables such as carrot tops, cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli.

Lastly, a rabbits diet should consist of highly quality pellets such as burgees. These pellets will provide digestible fibres and indigestible fibre will be moved through their digestive system and excreted as seperate round hard droppings. This type of fibre keeps the digestive system moving and their appetite stimulated.

Lets not forget water too, always provide fresh water for your rabbit and change their beakers daily. After all, it is thirsty work being that adorable 🤭

🐰🥕 RABBIT AWARENESS WEEK 🥕🐰

Do rabbits need enrichment?

The answer is yes. Enrichment improves the quality of a rabbits life. Rabbits are active and intelligent and will suffer when they are bored.

So, how can you enrich your rabbits life?

🐰 Change your rabbits environment.
Rabbits are prey animals in the wild and rely on tunnels to escape predictors, tunnels will encourage your rabbit to be more active and provide a sense of security. Tunnels can even be homemade by merging cardboard boxes together. Provide an entrance, exit and lots of tunnels for your rabbit to give them that extra sense of security.

Let your rabbit roam, rabbits can roam up to 5 miles daily in the wild so it is important that they have ample room to freely roam their enclosure.

Provide digging pits for your rabbit. Digging is a natural instinct for your rabbit, provide your rabbit with digging pits to encourage natural behavior.

Ensure that your rabbit has plenty of platforms for hiding under and climbing, platforms will act as a viewing point and provide a sense of safety.

🐰 Dietary enrichment.
Dietary enrichment is an item or toy that will provide mental stimulation and encourage natural foraging behaviors. Hide leafy greens around your rabbits hutch, even in their tunnels. Another excellent way to encourage dietary enrichment is to purchase puzzle feeders and mini kongs available to purchase at the clinic. Kongs can be stuffed with hay and their favorite vegetable ensuring that your rabbit has to work to get the tasty treats.

🐰 Toys.
Providing objects that encourage digging or throwing can make wonderful toys for rabbits. Toys such as willow balls are fantastic for rabbits as it is ideal for chewing, nudging and throwing.

We would love to see how you enrich your rabbits life in the comment section below 👇

🔷Meet The Pets At Kilcoole Vets🔷

Alfie 🥰

This little cutie is looking very happy while waiting on his appointment with our vet Aoife.

Alfie received his annual vaccination booster and canine cough vaccine.

Did you know ❓❓

Canine cough (also known as kennel cough) is an airborne disease and highly contagious in dogs. This is why it can spread through kennels and doggy day care facilities so quickly.
As it is airborne, It can be picked up anywhere, on your walk to the local supermarket with your dog, at the beach, in the woods and we recommended this vaccine to all dogs for this reason.
If you have any questions or would like to check that your dog is up to date with their canine cough vaccine please call our clinic on 01-2874802.

🔷Meet The Pets At Kilcoole Vets🔷

Mylo was booked in recently to have his a**l glands expressed. A**l glands are scent glands that all dogs have. 🐶

They are usually expressed naturally when a dog defecates. Sometimes the fluid can build up if their stool is not bulky enough to express the gland. Sometimes certain breeds can be predisposed to having a**l gland issues and need assistance expressing them.

Did you know that signs of a**l gland issues are scooting and excessive licking of the a**s?

If you think your dog is displaying any of these signs please call us on 01-2874802 and we will be happy to help 🐾

Our Story

Kilcoole Vets is a specialised small animal veterinary practice. The clinic opened at the beginning of March 2009. Kilcoole Vets is owned and run by veterinary surgeon Gail Nic Eoghain and veterinary nurse/behaviourist Shane Mc Dermott. Both had worked in veterinary practice for over ten years before establishing their own clinic. As lifelong pet owners themselves they share a vision of a companion animal hospital providing exemplary patient care and client service. Kilcoole Vets strives to embody that vision. After inspection by the Veterinary Council of Ireland, the premises have been accredited as a Registered Veterinary Hospital. Under the practice accreditation scheme this is the highest level attainable. The practice is located in the Whitethorn Centre in Kilcoole village (beside Tesco) and has ample free parking on its doorstep. On entering their bright and spacious reception and waiting area you will be welcomed by friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff. To accommodate their clients’ busy schedules, Kilcoole Vets is open 7 days a week including bank holidays and offers convenient opening hours with early to late hours. A dedicated emergency service is provided 24/7 and 365 days outside of those hours. A comprehensive range of health care services are provided under one roof for all small animals including dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, small furry pets, birds and reptiles. Kilcoole Vets tailors a health care programme for each pet, through every stage of their life.

They also have Pet Health Plans available to save pet owners money and spread the costs of their pet’s preventative health care needs. Finance options are available on products and for veterinary services/treatments.
