Antifreeze spills and leaky engines are a lethal threat to our pets. Ethylene glycol, the main ingredient in antifreeze, is extremely toxic. Unfortunately, it is naturally sweet, which is why pets are tempted to drink it. As the weather continues to drop colder, please be extremely cautious of spills and leaks ❄️

Ethylene glycol is also found in car screen wash, brake fluid, radiator fluid and some garden water features. Even small amounts, if swallowed, is deadly as it causes permanent damage to the kidneys.

Symptoms of antifreeze poisoning in dogs and cats:
- Wobbliness and weakness
- Vomiting
- Low energy (lethargy)
- Drinking and weeing more to begin, and then less than normal
- Difficulty breathing or fast breathing
- Seizures (fits)
- Collapse

Sadly, antifreeze poisoning is usually fatal unless it’s treated extremely quickly. Call your vet immediately if you think your pet has come into contact with antifreeze - don't wait for symptoms to appear!⚠️

Does your dog need to wear a coat on winter walks? ❄️

Many dogs cope with (or even enjoy!) the cold weather, but some can feel the chill more than others, despite their fur coats. Most dogs will be fine for short periods in the cold without any additional layers, but some definitely need a bit of extra warmth!

The furry friends who will feel the cold much faster than other dogs, and may benefit from wearing a winter coat, include:

- Dogs with fine or thin fur (e.g. Greyhounds and Whippets)
- Very young pups
- Senior dogs
- Dogs who are underweight
- Poorly pooches

If one of those sounds like your dog, there are lots of different dog coats available to choose from, so it’s important to know what’s suitable for your four-legged friend. It’s also important to remember that clothing for pets should be used to keep them warm and dry, not just to look fashionable.

Your dog should be able to move freely in their coat and do everything they usually do without the coat on, like running, jumping and of course pooping and peeing. If they bite or scratch at the coat or rub themselves on the floor or furniture, that’s a sign it doesn’t fit right and is irritating them ⚠️

Darker nights mean cats are more at risk of being involved in a road traffic accident during autumn and winter. Here are five tips from our vets to help your cat to stay safe 🐱

[Visual description: Infographic detailing five dark evening safety tips for cats. 1. Be prepared - make sure your cat is microchipped and is covered by pet insurance should anything happen. 2 - Neuter - By neutering your cat they’ll be much less likely to roam in search of a mate or get into fights. 3. Daylight - Keep your cat indoors at night and let them out during daylight hours. To help with this, you can try feeding your cat when it starts to get dark so they’ll come back for the night. 4. The secure outdoors - If you live in a busy area with lots of traffic, consider only letting your cat out into a secure garden or safe outdoor area. 5. Visibility - Reflective collars can help drivers see cats in the dark or in poor light. Choose a break-away style collar which will open if your cat catches it on a fence, branch or other object while they’re out exploring.]

🎆Walk your dog before dark so they are tired and relaxed for the evening

🎆Close Curtains or blinds to block out the flashing lights

🎆Play relaxing music or have the tv on to cover the noise

🎆Create a safe space in your house for the dog to hide or relax if they’re scared

🎆Distract them with treats, their favourite toy, or puzzle toys like kongs and snuffle mats to keep them occupied

🎆Dogs can run away when they are scared - keep their collar and ID tag on them and make sure your home is secure

How often do you brush your furry pal's teeth? 🦷

Brushing your dog’s teeth is one of the most important steps in their routine to keep their mouths happy and healthy!

Just like humans, dogs can get rotten teeth and gum problems if their teeth aren’t kept clean. Over time, this can lead to incredibly painful teeth and gums, but unlike us humans, your pet can’t tell you when it hurts.

In fact, it’s actually an animal instinct to hide pain! So, it’s important that you prevent this from happening by getting into a good routine if brushing your brushing your dog’s teeth daily 🪥
