FREE NEUTERING SCHEME FOR XL BULLIES FOR OWNERS IN RECEIPT OF SOCIAL WELFARE PAYMENTS - KILDARE & WEST WICKLOW AREA
February 1 is the deadline to apply for a Certificate of Exemption to own an XL bully from your local authority (Kildare or Wicklow County Council). There is no fee to apply for a Certificate of Exemption. After this date it will be illegal to own an unregistered XL bully and any unregistered XL bully may be seized by a Dog Warden or Garda and be euthanised. Before an XL bully can be given an exemption, it must be microchipped and neutered, so if you own one that is not microchipped or neutered, then you must get it done within the next two weeks.
The KWWSPCA has just been awarded some funds by the Department of Rural & Community Development, via the ISPCA, to help those on social welfare in County Kildare and West Wicklow who may be finding it difficult to cover the veterinary costs. If the dog is not already microchipped it must be and the owner will need to pay this cost as the scheme only covers neutering. The veterinary procedure would need to take place in one of the veterinary practices named by the KWWSPCA. If you are in need of help, please call the KWWSPCA Helpline as soon as possible on 087 6887136 to get more information.
According to KFM Radio this morning, Kildare has the highest number of XL bullies already registered, at 19. Before the Government initiative to provide funds, the KWWSPCA had been using its own funds to help a number of XL bully owners in Kildare get the necessary veterinary work carried out so that the dog could be registered.
Please see below government link with all details of the new legislation and the requirements to apply for a Certificate of Exemption.
