Our vets have been busy with knock-down disbudding this week. This is a video from last year but look how comfortable these calves are whilst sedated for disbudding. These calves also received local anaesthetic and long acting pain relief to reduce the impact on their welfare and any set backs in growth rates are minimized. With the warm wet weather we had in the early part of the Autumn we expect liver fluke to be a bigger issue than usual. Don't forget to dung sample and use the right fluke dose when treating. Salmonella is an important bacterial cause of late term abortions in Irish dairy cattle. It is more prevalent in areas with higher densities of cattle especially Leinster and Munster. Discuss with your vet if you are unsure of your herd status and and want to protect your cows. Blood testing can show up previous exposure indicating the need to vaccinate.
