General information
BBA Ireland has been in business for over 56 years. Founded by the late Tom Cooper in 1956, his vision of integrity and service to clients holds through to the present day. Established for a different era, the principles remain the same. Originally part of BBA plc in England, BBA Ireland was purchased by its present owners in 2000, who added the Curragh Bloodstock Agency in 2005. Through present Chairman Adrian Nicoll(who joined in 1971) and Patrick Cooper, son of the first chairman, there is a continuity in a straight line to the original founders. We have been purchasing, shipping and insuring horses under the one roof since President Eisenhower was in the White House, Anthony Eden in Number 10, and before Lester Piggott won his first Derby on Crepello. In that time the thoroughbred world has changed dramatically and we have adapted with it. From Larkspur in the 1962 Derby through to Snow Fairy in the 2010 Oaks, BBA Ireland has been associated with classic winners and champions, both equine and human. We are pioneers in the transport of horses. The first southern hemisphere shuttle stallions were shipped by BBA Ireland. Vintage Crop, the first European horse to win the Melbourne Cup was shipped by BBA Ireland. From the time Tom Cooper became the first European Agent to buy in Keeneland in 1959, BBA Ireland has reached out to all corners of the globe to search for and introduce new clients to the joys of Thoroughbred Racing and Breeding. We have been perennial leading buyers at all the major sales including Keeneland, Fasig Tipton,Tattersalls, Goffs, Inglis’s and Karaka. The roll call of greats purchased or managed for clients of BBA Ireland makes for impressive reading. Four winners of the Epsom Derby, two Grand National winners and champions in America, Hong Kong, Australia, Japan, France, and South America. Based in true horse country, a stone’s throw from The Curragh, we are an integral part of Ireland’s great association with the breeding and exporting of the finest thoroughbred horses. We are proud of that heritage and proud of the fact that we are the sole survivors from the great age of the full service Bloodstock Agency. We have been here for over half a century and that in itself is testament to the loyalty of our clients and to the hard work of all the people that provide backup to our agents on the road.
