Dog has been found

is Trixie and she is missing from the Park Road area, Killarney, since Saturday late afternoon. She’s a very excitable dog and may bounce and bark but is actually quite nervous of people when they get close. She should have the same collar on that she is wearing in the photo.

As the owner of a Rottie and a Mali this issue is something close to my heart. These dogs are being vilified just because of the breed. And now insurance companies are trying to cash in and healthy dogs are being destroyed for no reason. It really needs to stop.

There are approx 400 distinct breeds of dog worldwide. The IKC recognises approx 217 breeds give or take.
These are divided into 7 groups

Hound group, Working group, Terrier group, Gundog group, Pastoral group, Utility group and Toy group.

Our restricted breeds list incorporates dogs from more than one group - so we are not even targeting specific drives!

Let’s go back to the approx 400 breeds world wide. Imagine the amount of crosses and spin offs and strains and types that could be created. Some with sound breeding lines and parentage - good genetics and epigenetics, some without.

Yet somehow here in Ireland we can take 11 breeds and say - those, they are the ones to watch.
And when we say that - we are inadvertently saying that the millions of other possible breeds / crosses are safe….. just not these 11. That’s a ridiculous thing to say and that causes bites day in and day out coz people don’t respect “the safe” breeds.
The restricted breed list is truly beyond ludicrous!
The bite stats from this country prove these 11 breeds are no more likely to bite and no more likely to cause injury than comparable weight non restricted breeds. (Thank you Nanci Creedon Dog Behaviourist and Dr Padraig o Súllibhán for that research)

Why then oh why are we seeing pounds encouraging the surrender and destruction of dogs on the RBL. Limerick pound has waived surrender fees for restricted breeds this week … and as I understand it, RBL dogs can’t be rehomed from some pounds and that leaves only one option.

Plus now insurance companies are seeing a way to get a few more quid, RBL dogs not insured under normal policies … watch them become an expensive add on. What next?

It’s no secret that I think the RBL is woefully inadequate. I don’t actually object to it in principle but it’s laughable in its current form. I have two dogs on the list and I live by the rules but I’m one of a very small % that do.
These are the dogs on the list …. You tell me how often you see them out without a muzzle etc. I’m
Gonna guess regularly!

American pit bull terrier
English bull terrier
Staffordshire bull terrier
Bullmastiff
Dobermann Pinscher
German shepherd (Alsatian)
Rhodesian ridgeback
Rottweiler
Japanese Akita
Japanese tosa
Bandog

Where are the wolf dogs? The livestock guardian breeds? The Chinese red dogs? The dogo Argentina ? The Malinois? The xolos Etc etc.

I understand that maybe the civil servants who came up with the list in the 1980’s were very well intentioned and probably did a good job in that day - but the list is woefully outdated and ludicrously inadequate and not fit for purpose.

So my position on it is
- either scrap it and make it deed not breed
- or get hold of it, make it about size of dog, not breed and enforce it. Because this half light, twilight, plastic nonsense we have right now serves nobody.
Every large dog is capable of delivering a life changing or life ending bite. 2 labrador sized dogs could kill an adult. 1 Labrador sized dog could kill a very young, old or infirm person easily. Now I realise that’s a sobering thought. The university of Helsinki found the rough collie to be the most aggressive dog of that size in a study. (Little dachunds won overall 😂)
So why are we continuing to pretend that all the danger is in this 11 breeds of dog?

It is time to move away from emotional fear driven decisions, and away from emotional guilt fur baby decisions and deal in facts and make sound laws that can be measured and enforced…. For EVERYONE’s sake- the dogs, their owners, the non dog people ! We need to keep everyone safe.
And it all starts with breeding & acquisition laws in this country.

Make no mistake …. There is an ominous wind blowing through the dog world in Ireland at the moment.

Anyway pic of my two hellhounds to perpetuate the fear ….

She is just 10 months old and has a very distinctive light colouring.
