Last Tuesday, Agri Diagnostics delivered a short training course to students from Munster Technological University, showing them the latest methods and testing techniques.

A group of 11 students spent a morning in the company’s parasitology lab and were shown how to detect liver and rumen fluke in cattle. Parasites remain a health issue for farm animals, and it’s estimated that liver fluke disease causes annual losses of approximately €90 million in Ireland.

Here are some of our favourite photos from the day!

This week, Agriland.ie posted a really informative article on the BEEP-S Scheme and why it’s valuable to farmers.

Our takeaway? The BEEP-S Scheme supports farmers financially to test before they treat. Dosing your herd blankly is costly and will create resistance in your herd.

Agri Diagnostics is an approved laboratory for the BEEP-S Scheme. This year’s testing has been very successful with 100% reporting of results.

We’re delighted to support the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine in executing the testing for this project.

Many farmers will now be considering their winter parasite treatment protocol for cattle and the first step should be to take a dung sample.

📍 SWS 2022 Sheep Welfare Scheme 📍
Samples are tested using modified McMaster method. It requires 10 fresh dung samples taken from individual animals. In the laboratory, samples are mixed in equal proportions to prepare a composite sample which is then screened for the presence of several species of parasites:
Trichostrongylus sp. (bankrupt worm)
Strongyloides sp. (threadworm)
Nematodirus sp. (threadneck worm)
Monezia sp. (tapeworm)
Coccidia oocysts
Trichuris sp. (whipworm)
Lungworm
*Results are given in a number of observed parasite eggs per 1 gram of composite sample.
*Results for individual animals will not be reported unless the customer specifically requests them before submitting samples for testing.

📍BEEP-S 2022 Environmental Efficiency Programme Sucklers📍

The test is based on a faecal sedimentation method. It requires 10 fresh dung samples taken from individual animals. In our laboratory, samples are mixed in equal proportions to prepare a composite sample which is then screened for the presence of liver and rumen fluke eggs (Fasciola hepatica and Calicophoron daubnei, respectively). The laboratory will report only the presence or absence of parasites as per DAFM recommendations. The client will be notified in case of serious infestations being detected.

Faecal Egg Testing Beep Scheme 2021:

This task must be carried out and samples submitted to an approved laboratory on or before 01st October 2021.

All faecal samples collected must be fresh.
Please contact us to request the sampling pack (empty sample containers, submission form and Ziplock bags).

Cows should be placed in a clean pen. Leave them undisturbed for a couple of hours or until such time that a number of faecal deposits have been observed. If you have ten eligible cows, all must be sampled; if you have 5 eligible cows, you still must submit 10 samples as the lab cannot otherwise verify that has met the conditions of scheme.

Using gloves, collect faecal samples from at least 10 different fresh faecal deposits and place them in 10 separate containers (You must collect at least a heaped teaspoonful of faeces).
Place all filled containers of faeces in the plastic zip lock bag provided.

Post samples, on the day of sampling, or the following day at least. If samples are collected at the weekend store them in cool place preferable in a fridge not used for domestic purposes (DO NOT FREEZE or PLACE IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT) and post on Monday.
