PUPPY OWNERS PLEASE REMEMBER…

Your puppy isn’t bold, or doing anything out of spite. They’re not trying to dominate you, they’re not showing you who’s boss! They don’t know the human rules you have in place that are INVISIBLE.

They’re not doing anything puppies don’t do, which is to learn, play, be inquisitive, explore, explore with their mouths and so much more. However, how you deal with these perfectly natural dog behaviours, will depend on important things in the future, like…

🔱 Your relationship (which is everything)
🔱 How well they want to listen
🔱 If they’re scared of you
🔱 If your actions cause behavioural issues
🔱 And if those behaviours even stop at all

Please remember. These behaviours won’t last forever, but how you deal with them and the consequences of them might. Be positive. Force free. Reward lots. Use positive reinforcement. Any idiot can shout, but it takes true control and kindness to do better. If it didn’t work, I wouldn’t teach and preach it every single day 🙌.

Whose dog does this? 😍

When your dog ends up at the kennel because you’re tired of him, because he bothers you, or because he keeps you from going on vacation, he just sits there and waits.

He’s waiting for you to come back and get him. A second, a minute, an hour, a day, a month, a year—he’s still waiting.

He doesn’t understand why he’s there, but he waits because he trusts you. Unlike you, he loves you unconditionally.

Remember, your dog isn’t a toy. Think carefully before bringing a dog into your life. You’re taking on the responsibility of a living being and a family member.

Wherever you are whatever you’re doing, ALWAYS offer your dog a safe environment, especially in the home.

If you’re dog is stressed in the home, vocally window watching, stressed because of neighbours or noises in or out the home, or in anyway not completely relaxed in the home, you as owners need to take all the necessary steps, to make your environment/home a safe and relaxing place for our dog.

I was contacted yesterday by an ex client of mine, she is looking for as much advice and thought as people are able to offer. Really hard and sad situation. Thank you

Hi all! Hope you can shed some perspective on a dilemma I’m struggling with for my young female Rottweiler. She’s one year and two months and tore both her cruciate ligaments (back legs).

For a bit of context… I work from home so she’s had a lot of attention, walks and freedom since puppy. Where we live she has access to a beach at the bottom of the cliff and there are guests sharing the grounds (it’s sort of a company house in the middle of all the accommodations I take care of for work). I got her used to spending a little time alone and she was crate trained but nowadays only spends the night in her crate.

The orthopaedic surgeon said both legs is really rare (he only sees this once a year) and he’s never had a dog as young as her.
He says we must do surgery of both legs at the same time or euthanise. As it’s a longer procedure, he disclosed that, although small, there’s a risk of my dog passing from the anaesthesia.

This surgery will lead to immobility for 12 weeks in a crate 24/7, only coming out for potty on a lead as the tissues need to get stronger around the titanium he will install. He insisted this stage is crucial to her recovery as one bad movement could break her leg and ruin the work done, and then euthanasia would be the only choice. After the 12 weeks new x-rays will determine if she can start light exercise or if she needs to remain in the crate a little longer.

Her diet will also be crucial to her recovery and good future health. She wasn’t overweight but she has to remain sort of just underweight for the remainder of her life in order to put less weight on her legs.

As mentioned above, she has been living a very active lifestyle and the surgeon said she may not be allowed back on “her” beach due to the nature of the last steps (a 80cm rock she jumps) and her usual hill walks will likely be out of the question too.

I’m really worried about what crating for so long would potentially do to her mind. I also worry about what it will do to me as I love her and I know I will struggle to follow through on the instructions of leaving her in there all day when she cries.

I obviously don’t want to do euthanasia but I will if that’s the best choice for her. I want her to have the best life and if the quality of her life is diminished because she hates being restricted and has become a different dog from the crating, then I’m prepared to put her down. As there are guests walking around I also am scared of how she might interact with them if the crating changes her.

For the past 5 days I have gone back and forth from surgery to euthanasia without being able to come to a definite decision. She’s already suffering every day and no longer able to walk much at all aside from in our garden and I can see she is bored to death and acting up a little. I don’t want to delay too long as I don’t want to prolong this pain she’s already in without either treatment (more temporary pain followed by a different life) or an end (no more pain)

So, over the weekend, my best friend Nala turned 5️⃣ 💕.

Every day, she continues to teach me, amaze me, and make me a better person. I am a strong advocate of purely positive training, and Nala has shown me that this approach can be applied to children as well. Now that I’m a father, I practice the same positive methods I use in training, but with my boys. Ultimately, it is Nala who has formed the backbone of this approach, because the bond I have with her through these methods, is unmatched and so pure. I can only hope that the approach I use with her, will form the basis of my relationship with my children in the years to come. So, I can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done Nala.

Love, Dad 💖

Our Story

Muddy Paws provides Co.Kerry with both Dog Training and a Luxury Home Boarding/Pet Sitting service, both of the highest standard. We strive to bring you and your dog the very best services Ireland can offer, using our 21 combined years experience.

Our training ethos is simple, use only positive reinforcement to get the very best from your dog. Our training style is even simpler, use choice training in which one behavior will be rewarded, and the other is not. This not only means our training is effective and long lasting, but is also rewarding and fun for both dog and owner.

Our luxury home boarding service is a dream for all dog owners alike. As Ireland evolves into a country that loves their dogs, dog owners now don’t want to or have to leave their best friends in a kennel environment. We pride ourselves on having a home from home service where you are left with complete reassurance that your dog receives the best possible care while you’re away. We understand it’s not easy leaving your dog with just anyone, so we have gone above and beyond to make your dogs stay with us, nothing short of a holiday too.
