Our nurses are now running Wellness Screening consultations.

Pets age around seven times faster than humans and as they do, they become more susceptible to a variety of health conditions.

Wellness Screening is recommended in healthy, adult cats and dogs to aid early detection of disease and help them to live happier and healthier lives.

Your pet will receive a detailed health check by one of our trained veterinary nurses and they will also give tailored lifestyle advice.

For more information call us on 064 6637333.

⚠️ CHECK YOUR DOG'S VACCINES ARE UP TO DATE ⚠️

We have been made aware that there have been some confirmed cases of Leptospirosis in Kerry this week.

💉Leptospirosis is a disease that dogs are vaccinated for in their yearly boosters.

🐀It is usually spread by rats in their urine, contaminating water sources that dogs then drink.

👦🏻The disease is also contagious to humans.

☎️If you are unsure of your dog's vaccination status, call us on 064 6637333 and we can let you know if they are up to date.

🎄🎁 'Tis the season for.... PANCREATITIS! 🎁🎄

We are all guilty of wanting to spoil our pets at Christmas, whether it be a new bed, toys or giving them a special Christmas dinner. Unfortunately, many foods that are safe for us to eat can cause problems for our furry friends. Some foods, as shown in the first photo, can be toxic, causing vomiting and diarrhoea and possibly leading to more serious concerns such as seizures and organ failure.

Another common condition we see at this time of year is pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
Pancreatitis is a condition commonly seen in dogs with a huge range of severity, from stomach ache to vomiting and diarrhoea. It can even be fatal if left untreated.
The pancreas not only produces insulin to regulate the body's blood sugar levels, but it also produces large volumes of digestive enzymes that are released into the gut to aid digestion. If the pancreas becomes inflamed and damaged, it does not release the enzymes properly and can start digesting itself!

One common cause of pancreatitis is eating fatty foods.

The second and third pictures show how many calories some snacks are for dogs and cats. Their calorie intake is much lower than a humans, so if they are getting any of these as treats, their diets need to be altered accordingly.

The most common signs of pancreatitis are:
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Sore abdomen
• Off form/miserable
• No appetite

While most dogs recover well from pancreatitis, the treatment usually involves being put on a drip overnight and medications to settle the stomach.

We have already seen a number of cases of pancreatitis this month, so please be mindful when giving your dog some turkey and gravy or pigs in blankets that this might be too rich for them and consider a dog friendly alternative!

Cats can also suffer from pancreatitis, but it is less common and isn't usually caused by eating fatty foods.

If you are concerned that your pet may have eaten something it shouldn't, contact the practice as soon as possible.

Jasper melted our hearts today with his worried little face 🥺

He was recently rehomed and is still getting used to new experiences and meeting new people. The vets can be a very scary experience for the bravest of doggies but our nurses are always on hand to give treats and cuddles when they are most needed! Jasper warmed up to us a little by the end of his visit and we were delighted to get some tail wags and quick snuggles before he left 🥰

The last photo is of him totally at ease in his lovely new home 😍

We were very lucky to be visited by this gorgeous pair today, Darcy and Nidge.

They came in to see us for some routine dental treatment to ensure their mouths are kept in the best health possible.

We perform thorough dental examinations under general anaesthetic to allow us to fully assess the patient's mouth and see if any extractions are required.

Over 85% of pet dogs have underlying dental pain, so routine dental checks are very important for our furry friends. Annual vet checks are recommended so we can help identify any painful areas that may need treatment.

It is also Darcy's birthday today and their owners assured us they had the Pupcakes ready and waiting for the pairs return 🧁😋

This is Daisy. She's a lovely, little French Bulldog that was bought in to see us because her owners noticed that she occasionally had difficulty breathing and her snoring at night time was exceptionally loud!

Our Vet Eamon examined her upper airway, saw she had an elongated and thickened soft palate and barely any nostrils at all.
He concluded that she had Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS).
This is common to see in flat faced breeds such as Bulldogs and Pugs. As the skull is shortened through selective breeding, the soft tissues do not reduce in size proportionally, leading to an obstruction of airflow.

It was decided that Daisy's quality of life would be improved greatly by performing BOAS surgery, a procedure involving removing excess tissue that restricts airflow. In Daisy's case, this would include widening the nostrils and shortening the soft palate under general anaesthetic.

The photographs show the following:

1. Daisy on admit -very unhappy that she'd had no breakfast to prepare for her anaesthetic.
2. The elongated soft palate - this shows how much her airway was obstructed and is the main reason for her snoring.
3. After the soft palate had been shortened - this is known as a partial Staphylectomy - you can see how much more open the airway is even considering the tissues were quite swollen following the surgery.
4. Daisy's nostrils prior to surgery.
5. During surgery - a vertical wedge of Daisy's nose was resected from each nostril to allow better airflow - this is known as Rhinoplasty.
6. Daisy's nose post surgery, you can see the difference already!
7. Daisy recovering from her anaesthetic swaddled in a blanket and being cuddled by the nurses. She was enjoying it, we promise!

BOAS is a progressive condition, meaning it does worsen over time. Daisy's owners took action early and we are delighted with how well she is recovering from her surgery!

😻 the gorgeous Crumbs (yes, it is a great name!) was in with us to be spayed recently. She was a bit worried about being in the kennel at first but soon came out of her shell when she realised there were copious amounts of cuddles on offer!

Crumbs is a British Shorthair cross breed, which gives her the distinctive smokey blue coat colour and gorgeous copper coloured eyes.

Cat Fact - the British Shorthair is one of the oldest identifiable cat breeds in the world!

💉Did you miss your dog or cat's booster vaccine this year? Have your pet's vaccines lapsed and you just haven't got around to getting them up to date again? Life can be hectic!

Half the dogs in Ireland and an even greater number of cats are behind with their vaccinations. Pets with lapsed booster vaccinations may be vulnerable to disease. If the interval between vaccines significantly runs over the due date, the pet may no longer be protected by a single booster vaccination and will need a primary course of two injections.

As part of the Boost and Protect offer, we will give overdue pets a new primary vaccination course for the cost of a single vaccination.

Contact us on 064 6637333 for more details and to book an appointment!

This lovely collie has been found on Muckross Road. It is suspected she was dumped by the black gates - opposite the Jarveys as she was on her own sitting on a car mat and has been there all day. She was not wearing a collar and is not microchipped. If you are missing this dog please contact the dog warden.
