Another week, another parasite!
We're still seeing a huge amount of parasites in practice for the time of year.
These little critters are Otodectes cynotis, aka ear mites.
While less common in dogs, we see them very frequently in cats and kittens. Ear mites are highly contagious and can easily spread between cats and dogs in close contact.
Ear mites burrow into the ear canals and can cause extreme irritation and inflammation.
Common signs to look out for are frequent scratching of ears, ear pain, head shaking and abnormal (usually very dark) ear discharge that can have a strong smell to it.
Most flea and tick treatments also cover for ear mites. By keeping up to date with parasite preventatives, the risk of your pet bringing home these creepy crawlies is greatly reduced.
If you are concerned that your pet's parasite control is not up to date, pop in to the practice or give us a call on 064 6637333 and we can make sure they are fully covered.

This lovely kitten was brought in to us last week after being found at Torc Waterfall. Unfortunately, we have not been able to find his owner, so we are now looking for a loving home for him. If you think you could be the person to offer him this, please give us a call or pop in to the practice for more information.

⚠️ Is your pet's parasite control up to date? ⚠️
Despite the cooler temperatures, we are seeing an array of different parasites on patients visiting us at the moment!
Fleas are the most common parasite found on household pets. They particularly enjoy how warm and cosy our houses are with the heating on in the colder months! To ensure your home is free from fleas, you must control them on your pets and in the environment. Fleas can jump from pet to pet and from pet to human, they aren't too fussy about who they bite. Although they can't live and reproduce on people, they can cause nasty skin irritations. They generally only spend about 5% of their life cycle on a pet, the rest of the time is spent in the environment.
In the third picture, you can see an egg attached to the flea. Fleas can lay upto 50 eggs per day! This shows how quickly they multiply and can cause an infestation.
We have a variety of products to treat both your pets and the environment in practice.
We can also now send reminders to let you know when your pet's parasite treatment is due.

Meet Finn. Finn is a young, energetic kitten who likes to go adventuring. After one particular adventure, he came home limping on one of his back legs. His leg was very swollen and he was in a lot of pain. We went ahead with X-rays so we could see the extent of his injuries. The X-rays showed that Finn had fractured his tibia.
As a result of this, Finn needed to have surgery to repair this. His fracture was reduced (bones aligned) and fixed using an intermedullary pin and cerclage wire. After 6 weeks of rest and recuperation, Finn is recovering brilliantly. His last set of X-rays showed that his leg is healing well and he is using his leg comfortably.
Finn was so happy and flirtatious during all of his visits, he loves the cuddles! And well done to Finn's owners for minding him so well during his recovery and all the hard work they put in to his rehabilitation!
