🐶🐶 Please protect your pets in this heat ☀️☀️

➡️Heatstroke is a real danger for our pets and it's our job to keep them safe during this extremely hot weather. Dogs can not regulate their body temperature the same way as humans can and so it’s important to take all the necessary steps to ensure your pet stays cool and safe in this hot weather.

➡️Do not walk your dog during the day in this heat, it is simply to hot for them. Even the footpaths can burn their paws. Keep them in the shade at all times and provide plenty of water for them. Try to walk your dog very early in the morning or late in the evening when it's cooler.

➡️Paddling pools are a great way to help keep them cool during the day. Freeze their favourite treats and toys, this will encourage them to lick which can help them hydrate. It also keeps them still and lying down which will help stop them from overheating.

➡️In the house make sure they have access to a shaded area too, the sun coming through the window can be very hot. Also make sure they have plenty of access to fresh cold water. You can use a damp towel on the kitchen floor for them to lie on to help keep them cool while indoors.

➡️Sun cream should be applied to cats and dogs (even in the shade), especially those with white coats, white noses or ear tips. Be sure to use a pet friendly sun cream.

➡️Never ever leave your dog in the car, temperatures can rise very very quickly in hot cars making it extremely dangerous for our pets. Parking in the shade or leaving a window open is not going to help!

➡️Brachycephalic Dogs - Please be extra vigilant with flat faced/short-nosed dogs, e.g. boxers, french bulldogs, bulldogs, pugs. They can suffer with breathing on a normal day!

➡️If you are worried about your pet at all in this heat please consult your vet sooner rather than later.

🐶🐶*********Keep your dogs safe*********🐶🐶

Please keep your dogs out of the waterways as these algal blooms are toxic to dogs. Contact your vet as soon as possible if you think your dog has been exposed.

Signs of blue-green algae toxicity include:

Seizures
Panting
Excessive drooling
Respiratory failure
Diarrhea
Disorientation
Vomiting
Liver failure

Please read the link below to see what signs to look out for as prevention is key.

https://www.aspca.org/news/pet-safety-alert-rising-dangers-blue-green-algae

Signage has been erected at a number of locations along the shore of Lough Leane, on the lakes of Killarney, to advise of the potential for an algal bloom in the water and on the shoreline.
From samples by Kerry County Council staff in recent days, laboratory tests confirmed the presence of cyanobacteria - a blue-green algae - indicating the potential for the formation of algae along the shoreline.
In accordance with protocols for such situations, precautionary signage has been erected at locations along Lough Leane.
Those who frequent the shoreline are being advised to exercise caution and not to bathe in water if there are visible signs of algal blooms in vicinity.
They are also advised to ensure that they keep their dogs under control as algal accumulations can be harmful on ingestion.
The situation is being monitored closely on an ongoing basis by Kerry County Council.

🐱🐱🐱FEBRUARY IS CAT NEUTER MONTH!! 🐱🐱🐱

UPDATE: The dog has been reunited with her owner

This canine is currently in Garda custody in Killarney awaiting to be bailed out - free of charge - by its owner.
She was found wandering in town early this morning and was brought to the station for safe keeping.
Brown in colour and believed to be a breed of bulldog, she was not wearing a collar when found.
The owner can be reunited with the dog by calling to the Garda Station which can be contacted on 064-6631222.

Are you a cat owner? . You will be pleased to know that for the month of February we are offering a 20 euro discount on the cost of neutering or spaying your pet. All you need to do is ring your vet and make a booking. Don't leave it too long as places are limited. Kittens may be cute but they are expensive to rear properly and finding good homes is not always easy.
