What is PARVOVIRUS ?
🦠Canine parvovirus is an infectious virus. It primarily affects the body’s rapidly dividing cells and targets the intestinal tract and bone marrow or animals. Heart muscle cells of very young puppies can also be damaged by parvovirus.

How does your animal contract it?
🦠It can be picked up from direct contact with infected animals, infected faeces or infected areas where an infected animal has been.

What symptoms might your animal display?
🦠Lethargy
🦠Lack of appetite
🦠Fever
🦠Abdominal pain
🦠Vomiting/Diarrohea
🦠in severe cases: - high heart rate, difficulty breathing, low blood count and hypoglycemia.

Who’s most at risk?
🦠 young animals and unvaccinated animals

Treatment:
🦠If your animal has contracted the viruses they will require intensive veterinary care 24/7 untill they are recovered.

How does we prevent our animals contracting parvovirus?
🦠 Ensuring our animal is full vaccinated and receive their booster shot each year is the MOST IMPORTANT thing we can do to ensure our animal does not contract any preventable illnesses.

If you are unsure if your animal is fully vaccinated contact the clinic on 01 443 0890

Have you heard of Leptospirosis or better know as Weil’s disease?

🦠Leptospirosis is currently considered to be the most widely spread zoonotic infection currently in the world!!(scary we know! 🙃). It is a microscopic bacterium.

🦠when the animal comes in contact with an infected sorce the bacteria enter through the animal’s gums and into their blood stream! They move into multiple organs and is excreted through the animal’s urine.

🦠Infected animals shed the bacteria in their urine. Transmission can occur if your animal comes in contact directly or indirectly with the infected urine e.g in an infected water source.

🦠Clinical signs:
Early: - non specific and can be missed
Later in disease - Hepatic and/or renal failure
- Abdominal pain
- -Jaundice
- Liver damage
- Death
🦠 Diagnosis: Clinical signs can be used for diagnosis along side, full blood panel, sending to a special lab to test the urine and serology which is the further examination of blood.
🦠 Prevention: Ensuring your animal is completely up to date each year with their vaccination and if overdue to ensure to book in to restart their course!

🦠If you are unsure if your animal is up to-date with their vaccinations call the practice on 01 443 0890 or send an email to [email protected]
