These gorgeous girls booped into eachother in the clinic this morning waiting for their vaccinations. Bella - on the left - is a 4yr old Goldendoodle, her mini me being a 13yr old Bichon Frise. 👯♀️ Rightfully share the same namesake, there is no need for the beauty of them!!

No better way to celebrate World Senior Citizens Day than with these 2 Golden Girls 🥰
Molly, 13yrs & Zoey, 10yrs old are mother & daughter. They have been patients of City Vet for over 10 years! We have been seeing them more regularly in recent years as they become more prone to certain health conditions that are linked with age.
It is important to remember that old age is not a disease itself. Pets age faster than we do – so a trip to the vet once a year is about the equivalent of a senior citizen visiting the doctor every 7 years. It is therefore a good idea to bring your older pet for a regular check up, we recommend at least every 6 months.

A female Chihuahua was found on the Greenfields / Rosbrien road after being hit by a car. Unfortunately, she has passed away as a result. She has no microchip, so we are unable to inform the owners. She was however, wearing this collar in the picture below.
Approximately 8months - 1yr old, possibly a bit older, she is light brown with some black on her back and paws.

'Emi' is a name of Japanese origin, translating to “blessed with beauty”. How fitting!

A very interesting patient and case 🦎 meet Sparky the 1yr old Chameleon!
She was not feeling quite her 'sparky' self 😔 bloated, very lethargic and loss of appetite is what brought her in to see Donal.
After preforming an examination, Donal suspected Sparky may be egg-bound.
When a chameleon is egg-bound, it means they are unable to naturally pass eggs. This condition occurs in various reptile species as well as birds.
Similar to chickens, female chameleons can lay eggs with or without mating with a male, producing sterile eggs without fertilisation. They can produce and lay eggs every 3 - 6 months, starting as young as 6 months old, but typically not until after 1yr old or sometimes older. It’s a good habit to take periodic weight measurements of your chameleon for routine health monitoring and to observe for signs that she needs to lay eggs.
Donal took an x-ray which confirmed Sparky was suffering from this condition.
(We will attach a picture of the x-ray in the comments) Egg-binding is potentially life-threatening, so Donal arranged an emergency referral.
Sparky and her owners were on the way to a clinic in Bray the very next morning. She was admitted for emergency surgery to remove the eggs and made a full recovery! Back on the road home in no time, to her brother who we were told literally turns black with jealousy when Sparky gets the attention. It's going to take him a lot longer to recover than Sparky after this one 🤣

Happy ol' Chappy 🐶 Bracken visited Donal for his annual booster and worm treatment. He has been seeing Donal religiously since they first met back in 2011, at the age of 9 weeks old.
13yrs on his personality continues to shine like the sprightly pup who pounced into the clinic that day. 🥹 We have had the privilege of seeing this boy age gracefully and are grateful to be an integral part of his health and happiness. Looking forward to seeing you through your golden years Bracken.

Sister & Brother, Freda & Junior supporting each other on their big day to the vet for their neutering procedures. 😻
Being a bonded pair, they naturally do everything together. Being cats, they have no concept of siblings when it comes to natures calling.
So, why neuter both and not just one or the other? 🤔
Neutering not only prevents unwanted pregnancies but also reduces the risk of certain diseases. Un-spayed female cats are 7 times more likely to develop mammary cancer than those spayed at puberty.
Neutering also curbs unwanted behavioural patterns related to sexual maturity.
Males will be less likely to wander looking for “in-heat” females an in-turn reduces fighting and territorial behaviour by over 80%.
Remember, a healthy pet is a happy pet! 💜

🌞 Today will hit highs of 25 degrees in Limerick. A reminder that its NEVER safe to leave your pet in the car. Even with a cracked window or if you are just popping into the shop you are putting your pet at serious risk of heatstroke.

Everything you need to know about taking your pet on holiday. 💼✈️🐶🚢
Pets can travel to and from EU countries and many other countries without quarantine and return home with limited formality. However they NEED to have the following;
✅ Pet Passport (can be obtained here at City Vet)
✅ Microchip (ensure it is registered with up to date details)
✅ Rabies vaccination (at least 21 days before travelling)
✅ Up to date vaccinations
✅ a full veterinary pre-travel health check is required within 5 days of leaving.
❗ before returning to Ireland, a health-check may be a requirement by a local vet in the country you are visiting.
The rules for travel between Ireland and other EU countries vary and are subject to change, so check the Department of Agriculture’s website for the most up to date information. It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure compliance with these regulations.
There are several serious diseases that occur in foreign countries that do not occur in Ireland. It is important to use appropriate preventative medication, and to be aware of symptoms from these potentially serious diseases. The best source of information is a local vet at your holiday destination.

City Vet Pets 💜 Bob and Marley 🤭 are 1yr old Albino Ferret brothers. They visited Donal for their castration procedures. Here they are recovering post-op, reassuring and comforting each other through the big day 🫂 They went home that evening and bounced back to their mischievous selves in a matter of days.
Guess the crossbreed 🧐 Archie is an unusual cross. But the results of this genetic lottery are more than adorable. 💜 He is 11months old weighing in at 12kg. Can you guess what he is a mix of ⁉️Both breeds are of English origin. His wrinkly face gives away the prevalent bulldog in him while his floppy ears, body shape and coat colour is a subtle gesture of the hound breed that completes him. It’s a tough one! City Vet Pets 💜 Miss Wiggle Butt! 🥰 Bella is always very happy to see us, maybe not so much Donal... But we're working on it! Bella displays aggression when in the consult room with the vets. But not in the waiting room with strangers or other staff. This may be surprising to you, but we see it all the time - nervous aggression, it is a totally normal part of dog communication and we understand. We have been gradually helping Bella overcome her fear but we have seen a significant improvement recently. Up until only November of last year, Bella needed a mild sedation to even be examined. But no more! Why you ask? Bella comes into us a lot more often now, we see her every month for a monthly arthritis treatment. These frequent visits have desensitised Bella and allowed her to develop a more positive relationship with the clinic. Usually, pets only visit the clinic when they are sick or need their vaccinations - which is a negative association. We would encourage all to pop in and say hi if you are passing by, or when you can, so we can make a fuss of them and show it's not all bad! It is so important to us that your pets have a positive experience. We will do our very best to give them a fear free experience 💜
City Vet Pets 💜 We take great amusement in telling you this cat is called Kevin 🤭 We can laugh all we like at his human title, but we'll have you know Kevin in Irish means 'handsome'. If the shoe fits, wear it..and it certainly does!! Kevin stayed with us for a dental procedure with Donal. He had a few teeth removed and got a de-scale and polish. 😸 Kevin is approximately 3 and a half years old. He was a stray who settled into his now owner's garden back in 2020. Clever choice Kev!

City Vet Pets 💜 Alfredo, the travelling rabbit, was in for his annual booster 🐰 A visit we look forward to every year, filled with tales of his travels with his super cool owners. This years visit brought extra exciting news - his family has grown! They got him a little sister, Fiadh 🥹🐰🥰 As Fiadh was too young to be neutered, Alfredo done what big brothers do best, took responsibility, set an example and got castrated. Castration benefits go beyond breeding. It promotes both health and behaviour; 🥕 Prevents unwanted breeding and eliminates the risk of testicular and/or prostate cancer. 🥕 Uncastrated male rabbits often spray urine like tom cats, this tends to stop after castration. 🥕 Uncastrated males can be aggressive. After castration, testosterone levels fall dramatically which should reduce aggression or rid it completely. Alfredo is a 4yr old American Chinchilla rabbit. City Vet Pets 💜 Reilly is giving lash techs a run for their money with the length of her luscious lashes 😍 Reilly is a Cockapoo - a cross between Cocker Spaniel and Poodle, both breeds genetically predisposed to long lashes. Not just for looks, eyelashes are tactile organs. Just like our own, they protect the eye by telling it to close when something is interpreted as harmful. Unlike humans however, did you know ⁉️ dogs only have upper eyelashes, no lower.

City Vet Pets 💜 Being a Husky, Pita is a pro when it comes to this cold weather. Though his dense double coat helps tolerate the cold, Pita resorts to other measures, such as using minimal effort to conserve his energy, even when playing ball 🤣 Pita is 10yrs old and a familiar face in clinic. He comes in every month for an injection called Cytopoint, which alleviates his itchy skin due to a skin condition he has.
City Vet Pets 💜 This playful pup is called Autumn 🍂 She is a 10wk old Husky. An absolute bundle of joy, Autumn came in to meet us and get her 1st vaccination with great enthusiasm. All she wants is to play and cuddle, something we take just as serious as healthcare here at City Vet 🤭🥰
