The cold snap has arrived , it's crucial to prioritise the well-being of our pets, farm animals, and even the wild animals. Here are some important steps to ensure they stay safe and comfortable during this chilly spell.
For Pets & farm animals
- Provide Shelter: Ensure they have a warm, dry place to stay protected from the cold. Indoor space is ideal, but if they must be outside, insulated shelters with plenty of bedding can help.
- Check Food and Water: Ensure they have access to fresh water and appropriate nutrition. Cold weather can increase their energy needs, so consider adjusting their diet accordingly.
- Limit Outdoor Time with the pets : Shorten walks and outdoor playtime, especially for smaller or elderly pets. Monitor them closely for signs of discomfort or cold stress.
For Wild Animals:
- Food Sources: If you’re in a position to help, consider putting out bird feeders or safe food sources for wildlife to help them through the cold snap.
By taking these steps, we can help ensure that all animals, domestic, farm & wild animals stay safe and warm during this cold snap. Let’s work together to show our compassion and care for our furry friends and the creatures that share our environment. Stay warm and safe!

The Longford Animal Health Centre team was overjoyed to have played a part in the heartwarming reunion of Clyde, a beloved pet, with his family in Dublin. Missing since August 2023, Clyde's journey back home to Dublin was made possible through the invaluable technology of microchip identification. This small but powerful device allowed us to trace his family, bringing immeasurable excitement and relief to everyone involved. The successful reunion serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of microchipping pets, ensuring they can always find their way back to their loved ones. We are thrilled for Clyde and his family and grateful to have facilitated such a joyful ending!

The meeting at the Teagasc offices was very informative! Discussing that mastitis control is crucial for improving dairy herd health and productivity along with profitability. The focus on the reduction antibiotic use is also very timely, given the rising concerns about antimicrobial resistance.
Some key points that were covered in your meeting included.

1. Mastitis Management Practices: Sharing best practices for preventing mastitis, such as proper milking techniques, cow comfort, and hygiene protocols.

2. Monitoring and Early Detection: Emphasising the importance of regular health checks and using technology for early detection of mastitis cases.

3. Record Keeping: Discussing the importance of thorough record-keeping to track mastitis cases and the effectiveness of control measures.

5. Education and Training: Highlighting the need for ongoing education for farmers about antibiotic resistance and sustainable farming practices.

6. Collaborative Efforts: Encouraging collaboration between farmers, vets , and researchers - Teagasc advisors to develop effective mastitis control programs.

This beautiful Bernese Mountain puppy, Ranger, had a check-up with Vet Laura recently. With his fluffy coat and big paws, he was a bundle of joy, wagging his tail in excitement as they arrived at the clinic.
Ranger quickly warmed up to our staff and especially Vet Laura, she was gentle and attentive, making sure to put Ranger at ease. After a thorough examination, she prescribed some medication to ensure he stays healthy and happy.
With his meds in paw, Ranger left the clinic with a wagging tail and a bounce in his step, ready to continue his adventures at home.

Halloween can be a fun time for humans, but it can also be quite stressful for our pets. Here are some tips to help you mind your pets during the Halloween season:

⭐️⭐️Tips for Keeping Your Pets Safe and Calm This Halloween

👻 Create a Safe Space: Designate a quiet area in your home where your pet can retreat if they feel scared. Make it comfortable with their favorite blankets, toys, and some soothing music.

👻 Limit Exposure to Noises: Loud noises from fireworks and bangers can be frightening for pets. Keep windows and doors closed to minimise the sound, and consider using calming music to drown out the noise.

👻 Use Calming Products: Consider products like Nutracalm from the from our in store range. These can help soothe anxious pets. Consult with our staff immediately for recommendations tailored to your pet’s needs.

👻 Monitor Your Pet’s Behavior: Common signs of stress in pets include:
- Aggression
- Decreased appetite
- Increased vocalization
- Ears pinned back or pulled back
- Shaking or trembling

If you notice any of these signs, take action to comfort them.

👻 Keep Treats Out of Reach: Halloween treats, especially chocolate and sweets, can be toxic to pets. Make sure to keep all of them out of their reach.

👻 Supervise Trick-or-Treaters: If you plan to have trick-or-treaters, keep your pet in a separate room to avoid stress from unexpected visitors and loud noises.

👻 Consider a Halloween Costume: If your pet is comfortable wearing clothes, consider a costume that is safe and doesn’t restrict their movement or vision. Always supervise them while they’re dressed up.

👻 Stay Calm: Pets can pick up on your energy. If you remain calm and relaxed, it can help reassure them during the chaos of Halloween.

If you have any questions or concerns about your pet’s behavior during Halloween, feel free to call us at 🤙🏼 0433346716. Our staff is always on hand to help you find the best solutions for your furry friends.
