𝑷𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒆𝒙𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒊𝒔𝒆: 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒐𝒓 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓-𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈? 🤔

Probably the most questionable topic out there whenever a new puppy arrives to our home! And in the same time also a topic where even professionals from the field don't neccessarily share the same opinion.

𝑆𝑜 𝑙𝑒𝑡'𝑠 𝑡𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑎 𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑘 𝑎𝑡 𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑒𝑥𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑖𝑠𝑒-𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑠!
💎 𝗣𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 "𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝘁" to gain muscle mass. They are meant to be taught different surfaces, basic behaviours and positions, to build up in confidence, and body awareness through exploration, and fun motivational games.

💎 A variety of 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 can certainly help with development of proper neuromuscular activity and function. Not only is appropriate exercise not dangerous for your puppy, exercise has been shown to increase bone density, and reduce the risk for juvenile bone fractures.

💎 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 (when teaching tricks or behaviours, fitness or even sport skills for example - repeating the same move over and over again in order to learn it) over a period of time, 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀 that will teach your young athlete to use his whole body properly - and set good foundations for his upcoming active lifestyle or sporting career. Repetitive exercise with a young puppy is probably the biggest cause of growth plate and soft tissue injury.

💎 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝘁! Nutritional factors play an important role in the development (or prevention) of joint problems later in life, so your puppy should be fed a quality diet - excessive energy intake causes body weight gain with negative influences on joint development.

💎 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴: puppies walking on stairs from birth to 3 months of age had an increased risk of developing hip dysplasia (HD)*, so a shoutout to all breeders and fresh puppy owners to provide safe environment for their puppies to explore. Strenous exercising such as endurance trainings/prolonged running (especially on hard surfaces and treadmill), jumping/landing or repetitive abrupt deccelerations/accelerations can potentially damage developing cartilage and growth plates, which close at approx. 12 months of age with majority of dogs.

💎 Slippery surfaces can cause puppies to splay out, slide, or fall while running, or while they are engaged in a game with us! So make sure you are only letting your puppy run and play on 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗽 (such as grass), and if you have hardwood or tile floors, it would be a good idea to put down a carpet/rug where your dog is active.

💎 𝗢𝗳𝗳-𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴? Of course! Let your puppies explore! Factors associated with a decreased risk of developing HD included off-leash exercise from birth to 3 months of age*, and even more importantly, your puppy will be above happy to engage his nose, eyes, ears and paws to its fullest to sniff and roam around at his own pace - but in short bursts of activity, not sustained walks.
𝐵𝑢𝑡 ℎ𝑜𝑤 𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑔 𝑝𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒.. 𝑝𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑖𝑒𝑠? Growth plate closure in addition to s*x hormones and final maturity varies greatly among different dog breeds, so this can be all the way from 7 months (small breeds) to 18 months of age (giant breeds).
