🐾✈️ How to Get an Pet Passport for Your Furry Friend! 🐶🐱

Getting a pet passport is a crucial step if you plan to travel abroad with your furry friend. Here are the simple steps to ensure your furry companion is ready for international travel:

🟢Visit Your Vet for the Pet Passport: Visit us well in advance of your trip.

🟢Microchipping: Your pet must be microchipped and registered on an Irish microchip database. This is a requirement for identification purposes. The microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccine can be administered.

🟢Your Vet will issue your Pet’s Passport: Your vet will fill out the necessary details, including the microchip number, vaccination dates, and other essential health information.

🟢Rabies Vaccination: This vaccination must be done at least 30 days before travel. If your pet has had a rabies vaccination before, ensure it is still valid and that the booster shots are up-to-date.

🟢Additional Treatments (if required): Depending on the destination country, additional treatments such as tapeworm treatment may be required. Ensure you check the specific requirements for your travel destination and have these treatments recorded in the passport.

Please keep in mind that it is not the responsibility of your vet to know the rules for every country. The best course of action is to consult official resources, such as government websites well in advance of your trip.

With these steps, your furry friend will be all set for their adventure abroad! 🌍🐾 If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to drop by our clinic or give us a call. Safe travels! 🐶✈️🐱

🌞🐾 Summer Travel with Your Pets! 🐾🌞

As we approach the joyous summer holiday season, we know many of you are planning exciting trips and adventures with your furry friends. 🐶🐱 While we love seeing your pets embark on these journeys, we want to remind you that it is crucial to check the travel regulations for pets in your destination country. Each country will have specific regulations around vaccinations, travel documents and parasite control ✈️🚗

Please keep in mind that it is not the responsibility of your vet to know the rules for every country. The best course of action is to consult official resources, such as government websites well in advance of your trip. This ensures that you have all the necessary documentation and that your pet's travel goes smoothly. 🗺️📋

At Highfield, we are here to assist you with any health checks or vaccinations your pet may need before traveling. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about your pet's health. Safe travels and happy adventures with your beloved pets!

🐾Compassion in Every Paw, Care in Every Heart ❤️

In this instalment of our "Meet the Nurse" series, we're delighted to introduce you to Laura Meade, the dedicated head nurse at Highfield Clane. Laura graduated from Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) in 2017 and began her career at Highfield Naas in early 2020. Her exceptional skills and passion for nursing quickly led her to a promotion, and she has been the head nurse at Highfield Clane since late 2020. Laura’s journey in nursing is a testament to her commitment and expertise in the field 💚

Laura’s favourite part of nursing is patient care, where she finds immense satisfaction in helping and healing her patients. She has a special interest in feline medicine, and her passion for cats is evident in both her professional and personal life. Laura shares her home with Nubie, affectionately known as Mr. Nub, a special cat who came into her life under challenging circumstances. Nubie was a stray involved in a road traffic accident (RTA) and had to undergo a tail removal and a femoral head ostectomy (FHO) surgery. Despite his rough start ❤️‍🩹 Nubie has thrived under Laura’s loving care. She also has a bold dog named Bub, adding to her bustling and lively household 🐶😺

When Laura is not at the clinic, she enjoys a variety of activities that keep her both active and relaxed. She loves to travel and explore new places. Running and pilates are her go-to exercises, keeping her fit and energetic for her demanding role as a head nurse. Reading is another favourite pastime, and she often finds solace in enjoying a good book with Nubie by her side out in the sun 😎

Laura’s multifaceted interests and dedication to her profession make her an invaluable member of the Highfield Clane team.🥰

This week marks Dog Anxiety Awareness Week and we're here to shine a light on an issue that affects countless canine companions around the globe. 🐾 Anxiety in dogs can manifest in many ways, from subtle signs like excessive licking and yawning, to more overt behaviours such as destructive chewing or incessant barking. Understanding these cues is the first step in providing the support and care our furry friends need.

During Dog Anxiety Awareness Week, we encourage all dog owners to take a moment to observe their pet's behaviour. Are there triggers you might not have noticed before? Changes in environment, routine, or even the introduction of new family members (pets and humans alike) can significantly impact your dog's emotional well-being. 🏡💕

WHAT'S WRONG WITH MY PET’S EARS? 🐶😺

Ear problems in pets, particularly in dogs and cats, can arise from a variety of causes, leading to discomfort and, if left untreated, more severe health issues.

Here are some of the leading causes of ear problems in cats and dogs:

🔸Allergies: Often, allergies to food, the environment, or specific substances can lead to inflammation and infection in the ears.
🔸Ear Mites: Tiny parasites that are particularly common in puppies and can cause intense itching and irritation.
🔸Bacterial Infections: Bacteria can proliferate in a pet's ear, especially in warm, moist environments, leading to infections.
🔸Yeast Infections: Similar to bacterial infections, yeast can overgrow in the ears, causing itching, redness, and a distinct odour.
🔸Foreign Bodies: Grass seeds, dirt, or other small objects can become lodged in the ear canal, causing discomfort and potential infections.
🔸Excessive Moisture: Dogs that swim frequently or have ears that trap moisture can develop infections due to the damp environment.
🔸Improper Cleaning: Over-cleaning or incorrect cleaning methods can irritate the ear canal, while under-cleaning can allow wax and debris to build up, leading to infections.
🔸Physical Trauma: Injury to the ear or head can lead to secondary infections or problems within the ear canal, as well as conditions such as an aural haematoma.

The good news is, keeping your pet's ears clean can be simple. Regular checks, gentle cleaning with appropriate products, and keeping an eye out for signs of discomfort or infection are all crucial steps. If you’re unsure how to properly clean your pet's ears or notice any redness, swelling, or unpleasant odour, it’s time to visit your vet 💚
