The French Touch canine coaching

The French Touch canine coaching Helping you and your dog make the best of your life together :
-Physiotherapy and basic health care.

I grew up with a large pack of sighthounds, mainly whippets, and through my parents’ activities back in France, I’ve come to meet all sorts of dogs, and horses too, which have also been very present in my life from a young age. When amongst friends I often refer jokingly to my childhood as “when I was a puppy “ This is how much I’ve been influenced by my canine sisters and brothers! My upbringing

with the hounds allowed me to acquire very early on, a natural and instinctive knowledge and understanding of dogs in general and sighthounds in particular; their needs, their behaviour, their psychology. I have been learning and working with sighthounds ever since. It’s been the passion of my life, understanding my dogs inside and out, living amongst them as harmoniously as possible, caring for them in a way they’d look up to me as their friend and protector. Their happiness and health depends on me and I love the challenge! Along the journey I’ve met some very skilled vets and physical therapists who were eager to share their knowledge, inspiring me to do continuous further research. I have gained a wealth of experience from owning a large pack of greyhounds and caring for their daily needs including diet, exercise, physio, massage, grooming, fitness and health. Caring for them for so many years has led me to the point where I feel my wisdom and experience is worth sharing. Through the years I’ve learned than maintaining our dogs’ fitness, regularly using physio treatments ( massage, stretches, ultra sounds.. ) is paramount. Regular physio check-ups are a must to detect and assess many problems, from recurrent limps and overall stiffness to sudden changes of behaviour, nervousness etc… But also primarily to prevent more serious health issues such as how minor soft tissue injuries will lead to other problems when ignored and how long lasting stiffness will impact badly on our pet’s moods and appetite, triggering other ailments in time. Avoiding excessive medication and costly tests, massage and physio is a very efficient way to make our life with our pets as positive as it can be, and I can testify from it first-hand, since my pack of 10+ greyhounds very rarely need veterinary care. They benefit from decades of experience and they all trust my hands and expertise whatever problem they have (or don’t have yet !). I’ve often fostered hounds in need, trying to make them feel comfortable and welcome as quickly as possible, some would be coming from very tough backgrounds and in poor mental health. I’ve never met one that I couldn’t communicate with, regardless of their fears or issues. I’ve been dealing with excessive and difficult behaviours on many occasions and always with a very positive outcome, for both the dogs and their owners. My drive and inspiration being that there’s always a way to communicate positively with our dogs. Touch is one of these ways and whilst I’m particularly specialised with sighthounds, all dog breeds will enjoy and benefit from an experienced and confident hand and approach. This is what I’m willing to share with you and your dog and hopefully both of you will be willing and happy to catch up with me more than once ! :)

Next Sunday in Naas is now all organised, everybody has been notified with times and address and most have confirmed so far.
If you've missed out don't hesitate to pm me as last minute cancellations are common enough.
Clicking on the Going option without messaging me won't mean that you're in, even for returning clients.
Here's the Queen of the Glen ( I live in a little valley ), Cleo who you will all " meet ", she'll be the silent witness of our day. You'll notice the difference in body langage between these pics and her public demeanour ! ;)
For those not familiar with Cleo you can know more about her by browsing through her own photo album.

Sailor and Bella are nearly neighbours of mine, and it's the 3rd year I pay them a visit to take care of their smile. Yes non-sighthound dogs do like me too ! lol
They are both very well behaved and while a bit of time is needed around Bella just so she feels comfortable, once she gives her kiss of approval then she lets me work no prob. Very obvious on her last pic is a growth that doesn't look nasty but I advised owner Verena to get it checked and ask for a SNA ( Small Needle Aspiration ) which is totally non-invasive and can tell if it's malignant.
Other than that they both have fabulous teeth for their age

Today I met Suzie who was lucky enough to be paid a home visit as she's not too far from me. At 6.5y old this gorgeous girl doesn't have a mouth that matches her looks unfortunately and yes extractions will be needed at some point. Her gums were very inflamed and I advised owner Karrie to stop brushing Suzie's teeth for now on, only using hydrogen peroxide on a cotton pad and also make some change to the way she's fed. Hopefully after today's clean and with a slightly different routine her gums will sooth up, this must feel quite sore.
Suzie had a complimentary nail cut too, my clients know that I'm not charging any extra for that as it's such a basic task. While handling the back paws it was obvious Suzie was in pain when lifting slightly her back legs and a quick check up showed a huge muscle tension built up around her rear area. So she might be visiting me next time for some well needed physio.

I was looking forward to meet Suzette and Megatron as when Suzette contacted me by email she was so worried and confused and Mega had had such a very tough time with more to come if things were going as planned...
Mega suffers from the white blouse syndrome, although it apparently went through the roof recently, he wasn't always that way. So bad that when he was in the vets the last time for some extractions, he was still fighting the anaesthesia when the vet was trying to set up the tube down his throat, so bad that they had to top up the anaesthetic ! So bad that he was sick ( diarrhoea and vomiting ) for nearly 2 days afterward.. That's what Suzette was told by the vet who then insisted that Mega had to come back to extract another 16 teeth...! Oh and also amputate a weight bearing toe on a front paw. And to help with it they gave her some strong calming medication for Mega before heading to the clinic..
It was as bad as I thought when I met him in the flesh : a quick look at his toe confirmed a very simple sprung toe, the 2nd knuckle had been twisted with ligament damage. I know it might sound bad but it's very common and benign. The knuckle swells and the toe is painful for a while triggering more or less limping, but with proper, simple care it heals leaving the knuckle bigger than it was and fused, so hard to the touch. The main thing being to keep the nails short to avoid excessive pressure on the toe joints, once healed it won't trigger any ill effect. So No amputation..
Now his teeth.. Suzette had sent me pictures but I had to look at them with my own eyes... These photos were taken as " before " pics... There are no after pics because there was nothing for me to do ! Mega is 8y old and yes he's had a dental under full anaesthesia recently, but then the vet wants to extract 16 more !!?? Where ? Which ones !? Yes there is a bit of gum recess here and there but with daily use of hydrogen peroxide it'll be no trouble.
I was glad I managed to re-assure Suzette and most of all glad that she had gotten in touch. Mega is a fab example of why I'm doing what I'm doing, as an owner I've been confronted to vets who -had no idea what they were doing -or were always pushing for more €€€ -or both and now that I'm well seasoned this drives me mad ! Given Mega's excessively bad reaction, and the fact that he's a sighthound, very sensitive to sedatives, a proper vet should have tried their best to minimise to the maximum the stress imposed upon him, ask Suzette to try and bring him through the back door, take off the white blouse, tell her how fab was his mouth for his age and that his toe wouldn't bother him at all no need to add more !
Keep up the good work Suzette, he's in fab condition ❤ I'll be looking forward to see you 2 again, it was a lovely meeting !

Before we close our doors, please help us find homes for these amazing dogs in our care

Nova is house trained, very gentle on lead. Loves the car, great with all breeds of dogs but does need a home as only pet. She can live with children that are sensible and know to leave her alone when asleep. She also needs a home with someone home most of the day or someone who could take her into work she just loves being in your company. She would also be amazing for an elderly person as she’s so so gentle

Arnold is a super sweet boy full of life, loves getting out and about but also likes to sleep for hours after his walk. He can be alert on the lead but this will settle the more he’s out exploring new areas. He’s fine to live with another dog his size and can live with children older than 6yrs. Preferably needs a home with someone who’s experienced having a large breed.

Dreamer is a sweetheart, so gentle and loving. Good on the lead can be excited at start but soon settles. Alert to smaller dogs off lead but walks by them with no issues, she’s also good to live with another dog similar in size. Can live with children older than 3yrs

Smokie & Oscar both house trained and ideally need to go as a pair. If separated then smokie better as an only dog or a calm male and Oscar needs another calm chilled out dog to live with. Smokie is confident and loves everyone and brilliant with other dogs, Oscar can be shy of new people but after a few meets he comes round and loves getting cuddles. He needs a home with children older than 12yrs but smokie can live with children older than 5yrs.

All dogs are neutered, wormed/flea treated, vaccinated, dental carried out….

Irish wolfhounds have AMAZING beards! Did you know they are part of the Sighthound group? Because they are sighthounds, they are medically different from other dogs, just like greyhounds. The Greyhound Health Initiative is currently supporting a study on Irish Wolfhound Blood Values so that we can create cards for wolfhound owners and their vets. We also have a few educational articles on our website about Wolfhounds. Visit our Educational resources page for more information by following this link: https://greyhoundhealthinitiative.org/education-resources/

Yep... The pet food industry is funding veterinary school programs ! How do you want vets to know anything else about nutrition ? Just like the pharmaceutical industry is funding medical school programs...
They don't love you, or you pets.. Profit is the only aim.

RANT TIME - WHY DO VETS RECOMMEND S**T FOOD?!
Hey guys, this is just your weekly knowledge topper-upper from Nestlé, the most hated and boycotted food company on earth!!

Sharing this here now as I just put the wraps on a few consults today and something two separate folk said to me are now running around my mind. I feel if I don't post about it I'll get a big boil or something.

The first person said her relationship with her local vet who is very, very, very anti-fresh food for pets, has dissolved to the point she can't use them anymore. As she's rural it means a long drive to a vet that will humour her out there ideas.

But it was the consult after that made me mad. A couple were put off feeding their large dog real food by Ark Vets in Dublin "they heard of a dog fed just beef mince for ages that got ill".

Yeah! No s**t Ark Vets!! Don't do that for too long!!!

I mean, as if I need to highlight, can you imagine your doctor saying they don't recommend fresh food anymore as they heard a kid someplace got ill after being fed just pizza, or just broccoli, or worse, just Nestlé food products?!

How are they this confused on this simple point?!

Clearly, the parasitical cash-infiltration by these candy companies into our veterinary departments where these kids might get one or two lectures on canine nutrition (delivered by them, for the most part, as FOI requests clearly show us) over their five years, is money well spent.

They then follow this up with a deluge of bad info into vet clinics via reps and social media via their hateful whitecoat vets, paid to disseminate nonsense and muddy the waters. A tide of crap info that our young are proving unable to swim against.

It's interesting to note the Nestlé boycott began after the world came to the conclusion their "complete" food for kids wasn't actually complete at all, that it couldn't be, that real food is far too complex to replicate in a lab.

[...as if I have to say for the new fragile amongst us, it's great we have it for folk that can't ...yada yada yada...]
..But the reason they're the MOST HATED junk food company on earth is that after this became the accepted scientific theory (not hypothesis, it moves to theory with evidence...you know, the stuff they never show you to support kibble feeding....), Nestlé continued to market their product as a breast milk replacement in countries that might not have the same levels of regulation in place.

It was the fact they KNOWINGLY did that, DO that, repeatedly, still today, assumedly jeopardising the health of kids eating their s**te ultra-processed food product (as we know it's NOT as good as the real thing), that they are the most hated food company on earth.

That's what this company will do to make money off the back of human baby health.

Now, do you seriously think this company loves dogs more?!

Unbelievably, the evidenced-based veterinary industry does...and again, based on ZERO factual evidence whatsoever.

Check out that poster below (which always slates the opposition as they have no talking points on the health benefits of their junk food products):

SAFETY CONCERNS - more than 140 people have been poisoned by dry pet food, half them toddlers under 2 years of age. From raw dog food? 3 or 4, maybe, and some "suspected"...by the industry. In fact, enormous retrospective safety analysis published in top journals show feeding raw seems to be an incredibly safe thing to do! No such analysis exists for dry.

HEALTH RISK - tens of thousands of pets have been killed by kibble over multiple instances. From complete raw? Less than 10.

SCIENTIFIC INSIGHTS - not a single study shows high carb kibble is beneficial to a meat eater for anything (bar weight gain!). In fact, of all the head-to-heads in existence (bar one single study...produced byyyyy...you guessed it, Nestlé....!!!) every single one of them favours real food / raw. Every one of them.

NUTRITIONAL COMPLETENESS - an analysis of "complete" UK kibble found 2/3 failed to meet THE MINIMUM nutritional standards set out by the industry itself (including prescription kibble). 94% of the cans. And they STILL have the audacity to go on about their crap being perfect!!!

They are simply using the same tricks they learned in the human realm and are deploying them in the even less regulated pet food sector. Using the insance profits generated by selling Weetabix for €10/kg, they pay off the veterinary departments so these kids come out spewing Ronald Mc Donald nonsense like Ark Vets are doing, they pay off (if not outright own) the journals where they print their bulls**t science, they pay the regulators, they pay AAFCO, they pay FEDIAF, they pay WSAVA. They cash-infiltrate all sectors of the cash-hungry vet sector.

Our young vets haven't a hope.

We KNOW our young vets love animals, God knows. It's a tough gig to get into and then they're thrown into practice, into business, expected to be masters of all aspects of all animals. After 12hrs of emotionally taxing work (UK vets average 57hrs a week guys - imagine dealing with sick pets and stressed pet owners all day, honestly I can only do 3-4 consults max), how can we expect them to research the 100's of drugs and products they use each day as soon as they get home?!

This workload and stress is clearly not working out for our vets and they know it. Add to this the fact the corporates are not paying them appropriately and the dropout rate of young vets is s at an all-time high.

So, while you should stand your ground on topics of nutrition, as you will surely know more than the average vet in clinic today, try save your anger for the ultra-processed food companies - Nestlé, Mars Inc, Colgate-Palmolive - the new to***co companies. They will say and do literally anything to get you, your vet and your pet hooked and, with more money than God, they are black belts in bulls**t.

In the meantime, Ark Vets, and any other vet clinics out there still reading this, I offer you and all your vets a full day of my time, on the house. No strings. We can do lectures on canine nutrition, including the various diets we use for all the top illnesses. I will give you all the science you need. I will answer all of your questions. I will do it on Sunday if you need it. Young vets that are afraid of superior rebuke, get a gang of like minded souls together and I will do it on the QT and not mention it again.

For the love of dogs, please come to the table and at least DEBATE. Be open and bloody adult enough to at least hear our side of the story, because with studies showing feeding pets real food significantly reduces their chance of skin, ear and gut conditions, your s**t nutritional advice IS harming pets.

As humans, we’ve long understood the importance of eating fresh, whole foods and steering clear of ultra-processed options. The link between processed foods and a myriad of health issues—ranging from allergies and gastrointestinal problems to neurological disorders and even cancers—has been well established. So why is it that when we consult with most vets and breeders, we’re often advised to only feed ultra-processed food to our pets? This is a critical topic for long-term health, and with your help, we can work together to change this!
This week, one of the few unbiased, independent pet food research groups, DogRisk, is raising money to advance this important topic for the benefit of dogs everywhere. It’s absolutely crucial that groups like DogRisk exist and remain independent, free from the influence of major food and pharmaceutical companies, so they can publish findings without bias or pressure from commercial interests. That’s why we need to support them today!
My amazing veterinary colleague and her team of passionate students are leading the charge, globally, on pet nutrition. Their team includes veterinarians, animal nutritionists, biologists, chemists, geneticists, and other experts who look at every facet of pet nutrition and how it impacts health and well-being. The DogRisk team uses a variety of cutting-edge research methods to expand the world’s understanding of dog diets and diseases:
* Large-scale questionnaires to uncover the associations between dietary factors and disease risk or protection, using robust epidemiological methods.
* Clinical diet intervention studies to determine whether certain diets can prevent disease or alleviate symptoms in affected dogs.
* Comparing food supplements to pharmaceuticals and placebos to scientifically demonstrate the therapeutic power of nutrition—like using fish oil or green-lipped mussel meat for managing arthritic pain.
* Genetic research allows the team to dig deep into gene expression, metabolic pathways, and gut microbiota, shedding light on why some dogs are more prone to disease than others.
* They also evaluate the risks associated with various diets, finding, for example, that commercially available raw foods carry no more risk of harmful bacteria than dry foods.
All of their funding comes from individuals like you and me. Your donation helps them continue this vital work and empowers them to share their findings with dog owners worldwide. Please consider donating today, $1, $10, $100...it all helps us know more! Together, we can extend the life and health span of dogs everywhere. With your support, we can make this happen! Please please im asking this with all my heart for someone to give Nova (5yrs)a loving home .She is just a great girl and the months she passed with in her other home she ran free off lead and played happily with her whippet friend .I really cannot understand what happened but what I was told was the whippet jumped up onto the sofa and nova caught her face under her jaw . After having Nova for over a year in my home with 10 other dogs she was not once aggressive towards any of them she kept herself to herself .Yes If she was on the sofa and one of my dogs came close she would snap but I was able to cope with this . I understand that the lady that had her had to put her own dog first and her dog obviously got a fright . Sitting here watching my mum taking her last breaths I can do nothing but think of Nova in the kennels .My dad on his death bed loved seeing updates of Nova as he loved her and she had come along way and he died happy knowing she was happy . Unfortunately things happen but I’m asking with all my heart if you have a space on your sofa for a dog that will give you nothing but love Nova is the one . She is great on the lead and just loves her walks . The greyhounds over the years have helped me so much with my mental health and I have loved them all to the very first one I helped to find a home .It’s devastating for us and also the dogs when they come back to us I get too emotionally involved especially with the ones I foster .We have other dogs looking for homes too and a nightmare list waiting to come in. At this moment in time I don’t know what my future holds but I will always have a love for the greyhounds .Tara

While I'm not anti-kibble my clients know that I always advocate for more fresh food...
Vets have been brainwashed by the pet food industry for many years, everyone should understand that now.

Finally, we’re at a turning point in veterinary nutrition. ✨ Vets are the last group of formally trained medical professionals to still actively (and sometimes aggressively) promote the exclusive feeding of ultra-processed, pelleted food for a lifetime (birth to death), as a means to achieve longterm health. 🥺❓
This incongruent and unorthodox recommendation is a result of our nutrition education during veterinary medical school. As of now, every vet school around the world is endowed by a Big Pet Food brand, so their nutrition curriculum is funded, prepared and executed (taught) by the top (ultra-processed) pet food manufacturers (or faculty funded by them), so our future vets don’t have access to unbiased nutrition information. But our Next Generation vet students are asking more questions 💥; aren’t less processed, fresher foods healthier for all mammals? How does heat and extended, unregulated, storage temps affect added nutrients, flavorings, palatants and additives 🌡️? Where are all the synthetic nutrients coming from, and is anyone regulating safety? In the U.S., there’s no limit on the amount of copper and other minerals in pet food… and what happens when we feed excessive amounts in perpetuity?
While some vet med students may not feel nutrition is relevant to their future (see link in graphic), and some (correctly) feel they aren’t adequately prepared for the job ahead of them, we have a whole new generation of intelligent, inspired, and empowered veterinary students who actually understand all of these issues, and are moving forward with a clear sense of what needs to happen in veterinary hospitals around the world, but also what has to happen in the industry ☄️. The next generation of present-knowledge vets is here… let’s support the heck out of them❣️
