Candy was in this morning for her one month post-operative check up after she had cataract surgery performed in both eyes.

Candy is a diabetic patient who developed cataracts very quickly, and this acute blindness can be disorientating. Cataract surgery restores vision and improves quality of life for these patients.

Candy is doing amazingly, she's in great form and happy to be back going for walks on the beach! 🤓😎

Corneal Cross-linking 😎

Fiona is showing the use of a novel technique known as Corneal Cross-Linking. This is a new treatment available to veterinary ophthalmologists that involves the use of UV-A Radiation to treat corneal infections and ulcers.

It's an amazing treatment to be able to offer. Bailey who is undergoing the treatment in the picture had been suffering with severe infectious corneal disease with multiple bacteria that were all resistant to antibiotics. After weeks of unsuccessful antibiotic therapy; his problems were fully resolved following cross-linking.

In the world of growing antibiotic resistance, this is an amazing tool to have in our arsenal.

Fiona spent an amazing few days at the Veterinary Ophthalmic Surgery Course at Cáceres in Spain. She spent 3 days training, both lecture and practical format, on advanced microsurgical skills.
A residency program is a big commitment from both the resident, supervisor and supporting practice. Thank you to XLVets and Skillnet Ireland for their sponsorship of the Residency program.

Raphael had bilateral congenital eyelid agenesis which means that he was born with no upper eyelids. This creates problems with exposure and the facial hairs rub on the cornea. We used his lip as a flap to create a new upper eyelid on both sides. He is healing very well although will look a bit strange until his hair grows back. He is such a playful out-going happy little cat, we’ll miss his antics at the hospital but delighted that he should now be comfortable and ready to get on with his life.
