This week we hosted modules 3 & 4 for our 2024/25 cohort of the XLVets Skillnet Veterinary Graduate Programme.
On Tuesday, Brian Faulkner BSc (Hons) BVM&S CertGP(SAM) CertGP(BPS) MBA MSc(Psych)FRCVS delivered an insightful session on “Consultation Skills". Module 3 was kindly supported by Chanelle Animal Health.
On Thursday, Ger Cusack MVB MRCVS Cert DHH Comeragh Veterinary and Donal Lynch MVB MRCVS Cert DHH Slieve Bloom Veterinary led an engaging session on “Bovine Surgery – Essential Survival Skills.” Module 4 was kindly supported by Bimeda.

Last Saturday, November 30th, we hosted our XLVets Ireland Christmas Event at The Inn at Dromoland, Co. Clare. We were delighted to see such a fantastic turnout of XLVets member business owners, their teams, and our industry partners.
The evening was filled with great food, lots of prizes, plenty of craic and laughs, and an amazing atmosphere—thanks to the band Acoustra and DJ Richie who kept the party going and the dancefloor full all night. It was a night to remember, with our biggest attendance yet!

This week marked the conclusion of the final two modules for our 2023/24 cohort of the XLVets Skillnet Veterinary Graduate Programme.
On Wednesday, Seamus Hoey, MVB, DipECVDI, DipACVR (DI, EDI), MRCVS delivered an engaging session on “Basics of Ultrasound Scanning”, and on Thursday, Michael Cox, MCX Training & Development led an insightful workshop on “Communications and Emotional Intelligence.”
Thank you to our 18 graduates who participated in this programme over the past 15 months. Through the programme, our graduates have gained invaluable experience and skills across key areas, including bovine, companion animal, ovine, equine, and communication, encouraging them to develop and enhance multiple competencies for a successful career in veterinary practice.

Last night, we hosted our Annual XLVets Ireland Farm Animal Clinical Case Night at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Co. Limerick. Six XLVets speakers shared interesting and novel cases they had encountered from the past year. John Mee from Teagasc also joined us to present the latest results and updates on our bovine congenital defects project.
The night wrapped up with some fun competition in the Farm Animal Clinical Quiz. 🏆 Congratulations to David Cassely of Summerhill Veterinary Clinic - Nenagh, County Tipperary, taking the XLVets Perpetual Cup home to Nenagh! 🎉

Yesterday, XLVets Skillnet hosted our second "CowSignals for the Veterinary Practitioner" event with trainer Bert van Niejenhuis, CowSignals Training Company in Charleville, Co. Cork.
This training focuses on subtle behavioural signals in herds, our attendees learned how to advise dairy farmers with tips to improve the cows health and welfare resulting in reduced disease and injury and increased production efficiencies.

As vets in practice, we are highly trained to measure clinical signs - it is a key part of our diagnostic skills. CowSignals Training Company builds on this to make us more familiar to subtle behavioural signals in our client’s herds.
Our attendees gained confidence in advising farmers on housing design, feeding and management practices.

Summerhill Veterinary Clinic - Nenagh, County Tipperary are looking to recruit two full time vets to join their team.

Last week, XLVets Skillnet hosted two Farm Post Mortems events, offering valuable training to farm animal vets who are interested in learning how to perform a competent post mortem examination. On Thursday, Module 11 of the 2023/24 XLVets Veterinary Graduate Programme "Post-Mortem Techniques and Disease Investigation," took place, followed by a second Farm Post Mortems event on Friday aimed at farm animal vets of all experience levels.
Both sessions were led by Ben Strugnell of Farm Post Mortems Ltd. who provided vets with practical skills for performing post-mortem examinations on cattle and sheep. Participants learned how to recognise gross post-mortem findings associated with common causes of death, as well as the necessary sampling techniques to confirm suspected diagnoses. An important aspect of the training was the focus on disease pathogenesis, helping attendees better understand the underlying processes of various diseases.

On Wednesday, XLVets Skillnet hosted Module 10 of our 2023/24 XLVets Veterinary Graduate Programme “Bovine Reproduction and Scanning”. The module was delivered by trainers Donal Lynch MVB MRCVS Cert DHH Slieve Bloom Veterinary and Conor Geraghty MVB Cert DHH FarmGate Veterinary Group.
Upon completion of this module, our graduates will understand reproductive physiology, the oestrus cycle, relevant hormones, and ultrasound examination of ovaries and the uterus. The course also covers pregnancy diagnosis and ageing. Graduates will return to practice with the confidence to start developing their skills in scanning cows pre- and post-breeding.

Glasslyn Vet Clinic are looking for a vet to join their 5-vet, 6-nurse small animal team. The position will be based in their newly refurbished and well-equipped clinic in Macroom with occasional duties at their main hospital in Bandon.
The position has no OOH and includes a 1:4 Saturday rota. VCI and VDS covered. Salary commensurate with experience. Generous benefits package including pension contribution, sick/maternity scheme.
Last week, XLVets Skillnet hosted a hands-on "Small Animal Ophthalmic Surgery" training session, led by Natasha Mitchell MVB DVOphthal MRCVS, Eye Vet.
The aim of this course was to enhance the confidence and proficiency of attendees in performing common ophthalmic procedures through learning essential ophthalmic surgery skills. Participants gained the knowledge and expertise necessary to perform these ophthalmic procedures with increased confidence, enhancing their skill set and improving patient outcomes.

XLVets Ireland and XLVets Skillnet were delighted to support the Glen Veterinary TY Academy for the second year in a row.
This first-of-its-kind initiative in the veterinary field offers a week-long Transition Year (TY) work experience programme designed to nurture students' interest in veterinary medicine. Following its success last year, the programme received over 60 applications this year, competing for 30 available spots.
Last week 30 TY students, representing nine different schools, were fully immersed in the daily operations of a veterinary clinic. They also completed projects led by facilitator Susan Hayes-Culleton from Savvy Teens and attended presentations by special guest speakers, including a talk by our own XLVets Ireland's CEO, Mike Curran.

XLVets Skillnet are hosting a "Farm Post Mortems" event on Friday 18th October 2024. Trainer Ben Strugnell Farm Post Mortems Ltd., aims to equip large animal vets with the ability to perform a competent post mortem examination of cattle and sheep, to recognise gross post mortem findings associated with common causes of death, and gain knowledge of the sampling requirements to confirm suspected diagnoses. Disease pathogenesis, which makes understanding of disease processes, is also a major feature.
This course is aimed at farm animal vets at any level.
