With each passing year, horses are living longer lives and many survive easily to 25 years of age or older. While this is good news, it also means that we need to be aware of changes that can occur with age in order to preserve the health and quality of life of our equine friends.

For example, Equine Cushing’s disease is one of the most common diseases of horses 15 years of age or older. This syndrome is better defined as Equine Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID) because it reflects the location within the brain that is abnormal. Clinical signs are associated with abnormally elevated hormone concentrations in the blood.

Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) is another endocrine disorder that can affect mature horses and shares some of the same clinical signs as PPID. Although the two disorders feature some striking clinical similarities — most notably a predisposition to development of chronic laminitis — the underlying disease biology is quite different in each case. Successful management relies on proper diagnosis by your equine veterinarian first.

Our understanding of both conditions, especially EMS, is incomplete and evolving, but sufficient information is currently available to highlight some important similarities and differences for the interested horse owner. Consult your veterinarian for more information and work with them to develop the best wellness practices to ensure a healthy life for your mature horse.

Looking forward to the Omagh Show Saturday and Shane’s Castle Sunday.

Fierceness ran 15th, my take on it is NBC showed him munching heartily on straw not once but twice not long before the race. A belly full of straw weighs the horse down and messes up its airways. Todd Pletcher’s fb page states he is the best trainer he just can’t win the big ones. I wish I could show him the NBC footage of his horse. Of all the horses NBC showed Fierceness was the only horse eating straw. Maybe he ran too fast in the Florida Derby, or maybe he had a trainer and a groom paying attention to him on that day and didn’t let him eat his bedding.

Why oh why has NBC shown Fierceness not once but twice standing in his stall munching on straw?!! The 150th Kentucky Derby is in less than an hour and a half away .
Where is his groom?
Worse I put him in my trifecta I want my £6 back.

Where will you be the first Saturday this May? 11:57pm I hope to see the Kentucky Derby somewhere!
I am picking by names this year I like Catching Freedom and Forever Young. €2 exacta probably.
I knew so many big gamblers my days on the racetracks it never appealed to me. A few dollars on a horse I spent months working on sometimes if I thought it had a real chance.
I sure wish I were in Kentucky this Saturday though!

Ok this is my last excerpt then I’m going to go feed all my horses, it’s about a wind sucker. I have had the not so pleasant pleasure of spending the last 20 years with a wind sucker.
Other than eating thousands of euros of railings fences and stables we did have some good times. I got to watch her jump professionally at shows for 5 years which was extremely thrilling for me. She bore me 4 foals, none of which wind sucked. I made money on 2 and still have 2.
I learned a lot from her, the electric fence in her stall worked a treat. “The real deal collar “ works the best. Comfort gut works well for her too.
But like the excerpt here in the pictures there are many days I think she should have been cooked😂. Just kidding. Kind of. Mostly. Ok now I’ll go muck her out and see can I get her to a good Connemara stallion. Shoot me not the horse.
Happy Saturday friends! Be good to your horses and try to learn.

Our Story

Hi I am Victoria McKinney and I am an animal veterinary chiropractor since 1997. I qualified with the AVCA (American Veterinary Chiropractic Association) way back then, but now live in Ireland and am on the MC for the IVCA (International Veterinary Chiropractic Association).

I am unique that I have been a horse owner more than 4 decades, I worked in summer camps, yards, stables, many racetracks (I actually counted my track licenses I have worked in 14 different racetracks in America) and even went to horse college for a bit. Horses have always been my passion and I want to help as many of them as I can while I am here.

I live in Newtowncunningham County Donegal on a hill in paradise with my animals. You can bring your horses to me here, or if you have lots to do I can come to you. Prices vary depending on how long it takes me to travel to you, I usually google the travel expenses and get back to you. If you only have a couple of horses you can bring them to me then it’s €75/horse.

What do I do?
