It’s a winter wonderland here at DDS tonight. The paddocks have a dusting of snow and everyone is eagerly awaiting their evening feed. Some are braying with excitement as their food arrives while others prefer to wait their turn in their cosy beds. It fills our hearts with joy to see everyone safe, warm and full.
Stay safe everyone ❤️
Day 208 - Runaround Rose!
The first zoom of 2025! Still trying to knock me down!! A big personality in a little body! Happy New Year from Baby Rose and friends.
It’s been a wonderful Christmas here at the sanctuary and it has been nice for the donkeys to have some time to just be donkeys!
Normal opening hours will resume on Friday so maybe you will get a chance to pop in and say hello. (12-30 until 4-30 Thursday until Sunday).

Faster & faster she goes! It’s hard to believe that is has been over five months since we lost our hearts to this little lady! She was going so fast this morning that she fell but in true Rose style she was up and away again! She is an inspiration to us every day. Go Baby Rose ❤️🌹Don’t ever change sweet girl ❤️
Calling Team Baby Rose!
Can you help sweet Baby Rose and her friends stay warm and fed over the winter months? No amount is too small. It is vital that we have enough feed and bedding to go around. You may donate on the attached link. Thank you. https://gofund.me/f0cda1e5
UPDATE ON LIZZIE
Lizzie is doing as well as can be expected. She is fighting her way back to health and gaining weight while she is obviously missing her two companions. The courage of these beautiful creatures never ceases to amaze us.
We made an attempt to give her a new stable mate but she was unhappy with the situation and stood with her back to her potential new friend. We take our cues from the donkeys and she seemed to be sending a clear messsge that she just wasn’t ready. Donkeys grieve deeply so we must respect that and be there to give her as much love and cuddles as possible.
Rose is ‘next door’ so she can see the little one from her stall and frequently comes over to check how baby is doing. So at least she has some company.
Rose has had a quiet couple of days because of storm Ashley but hopefully she will get outdoors for more adventures soon. Goodnight from all at DDS.❤️
And She’s Back!
After all the sadness of the last few days we look to our best girl to help raise everyone’s spirits and she never fails. Yes, the zooms are back and faster than ever!
Lizzie is doing as well as can be expected without her special friends. Goodnight from Baby Rose ❤️🌹
Day 119 - Meet the Donkeys!
Say hi to Russell who found safety with us a couple of years ago. Poor Russell was extremely thin and suffering from a lice infestation when he arrived. He was also very sad and defeated in his day to day interactions with us. Fast forward to 2024 and today Russell is a confident, happy boy who likes to have his nose scratched and get lots of hugs. He is a gentle soul who likes a quiet life.
In other news Rose is settled for the night and adjusting to the slightly shorter days which are making her go to sleep earlier! She’s still a baby! Night night from Russell, Baby Rose & all at DDS🌹❤️
Day 115 - Making another new friend
Jack is in the stall beside Rose and will sometimes pop his head over to say hello if he is feeling strong. Rose is too tiny to see him so she is constantly listening for his movements in the hope that he will appear! She is learning to love the company of other donkeys. Two vulnerable souls providing comfort to one another. ❤️Jack and Rose ❤️
And finally. This beautiful giant. The biggest but definitely the shyest as it took a lot of persuasion to get him to come out of the horse box. He is just stunning. Calling out anxiously to his friends. He is in need of a hoof trim and some ointment for his scratched nose. Welcome sweetheart ❤️
Day 112 - Four Months Old Today!
Cosy nights are beginning for Rose as she settles into her deep warm bed this evening. Don’t you just want to hug this little face!
She is really enjoying all the noises coming from the other stalls. Her striped tiger ears are turning left and right as she listens to the stamping, snorting, braying and munching going on around her! Learning to donkey! Wishing you all a very good night from a cosy Baby Rose❤️🌹
Day 107 - Lady in Red!
Rose is loving the freedom of being outdoors all day. She does so much running about during the day that she doesn’t have the energy for zoomies! It’s so strange having her out in the big world all by herself! Learning to let go is surprisingly hard even with baby donkeys! So proud of the fine little lady she is becoming. Night night from (a tired!) Baby Rose ❤️🌹
Day 102 -
Sorry for late post but it has been a very busy day. Rose had some lovely time in the sun today so she was super sleepy earlier than usual!
We’ll leave the final word to Scruffy (again!) as he never disappoints! (He definitely needs to floss!) Night night from Baby Rose & all at DDS ❤️🌹😁
