We get lots of clients asking what the difference between sedation and general anaesthesia πŸ’€

So here's the answer:

β˜‘οΈ Sedation involves administering medications to calm and relax your pet while keeping them conscious but stress-free. This approach allows us to safely conduct non-painful procedures like ultrasounds or x-rays. An IV canula is used during sedation.

β˜‘οΈ On the other hand, general anaesthesia results in a complete loss of consciousness, meaning your pet will be unaware of their surroundings. This method is typically used for surgical interventions or certain imaging techniques, like MRI scans, where sedation is not adequate. During these procedures, a venous canula will be placed in your pet to enable us to administer drugs. An ET tube will also be used as this allows our clinical team to administer oxygen and isoflurance gas, which keeps them under the general anaesthesia.

Cute little Pippa was in with us yesterday to have her a**l glands expressed πŸ’•

Did you know it's quite common for dogs to need assistance expressing their a**l glands? πŸ€”

Signs of an a**l gland issue in your dog include:

🐾 scooting
🐾 licking around the bum area
🐾 a fishy smell
🐾 bleeding or swelling around the bum area
🐾 leaking of a**l gland fluid

If you are concerned that your pet needs some assistance or you notice any of these signs, you can book in for a nurse consult with us.

They can even help with nail clipping at the same time! πŸ™Œ

🌿🐾 **Slow Down for Wildlife!** 🐾🌿

January is a critical time for foxes as they begin to move around in search of a mate, food, and safe places to give birth to their cubs.
We are urging people to remember to keep an eye out for these beautiful creatures on the roads.

Please take a moment to slow down and drive cautiouslyβ€”your attention can make all the difference in protecting our wildlife.
Together, we can ensure these amazing animals stay safe and thrive in our community!

Great advice from our friends at Kildare Wildlife Rescue πŸ’•

As the temperatures drop and most hedgehogs will start to sleep, there are still ways to help hedgehogs in your garden.

Here are 5 ways you can lend a hand:

1. Create a Hedgehog Haven: Build a small hedgehog house with cozy bedding to provide shelter or leave an area wild with lot’s of overgrowth and leaves.

2. Leave a Snack: Place dried cat food in your garden to keep them nourished. (Use a feeding station should any be disturbed from hibernation or continue to put on weight before sleeping)

3. Avoid Chemicals: Say NO to pesticides - they can harm hedgehogs and their food sources!

4. Check Your Garden: Before using garden machinery, make sure there’s no hedgehog hiding in hedging or longer grass!

5. Provide Water: A shallow dish of fresh water can be a lifesaver!

If you find a hedgehog in trouble always reach out to your local wildlife rescue
