EQUINE ARTHRITIS!

As we head through Autumn and into Winter and the associated damp weather many 'oldies but goldies' suffer from arthritic pain

Here you can see Cora sequentially selecting Liquorice powder, St John's Wort and Devils Claw root herb along with Dandelion root powder for those essential vit's and min's. Selecting herbs for pain is far more effective and easy on the horse's body as the body is getting what it needs and as such can utilise it effectively to the body's best advantage

Earlier this year we welcomed Mini with her two baby girls now named Lily and Tilly. They have enjoyed roaming within well fenced areas in order to grow and maintain health. Initially when they arrived they selected Linden Blossom absolute to build their confidence and have also enjoyed herbs for deworming such as Neem and Wormwood.

Here at Whitethorn Equine Health, like many caretakers of the land, we understand the importance and benefits of interspecies grazing to support the pasture.
Goats are terrific at clearing the plants are areas that horses wont touch. They are also great characters and are an addition to any pasture although they can strip the bark on some trees - they particularly love goat willow!

Just keep doing what you do, Mini, Lily and Tilly - we appreciate your great efforts to keep the land thriving and healthy!

SIDE SADDLE ANYONE?
Stunning entries and participants on Side-saddle at the RDS Horse Show last month. How do they stay on? Scroll to the last pic and you will see a pic of a side saddle with the two pommels that the lady wraps her legs around in order to remain seated.

Side saddle was introduced to preserve the modesty of the Lady but was largely dispensed with in the early 1900's post womens emancipation and the sufferagette movement.
However, it has enjoyed a revival in the last 40yrs or so and it was absolutely delightful to see these ladys showing their skills at not just trot and canter but all out gallop!

DENTAL CHECK UP! The girls had the dentist out a few weeks ago. Absolutely awestruck with this Lady's instant rapport with my girls - no sedation required even though we had Evi the Vet Animal Acupuncture Vet on hand should sedation be required. They both stood very calmly and cooperated fully. Just minor floating required so happy that they are correct for another while. Fully recommend Diane Wilson at Sycamore Equine Dentistry
Russell was absolutely besotted with her too and could barely contain himself throughout his accupuncture session with Animal Acupuncture Vet

BURDOCK ! We were lucky to find this plant growing in our winter grazing. It's generally not found on our land, although quite prevalent in our neighbours farm. It's quite easy to recognise due to it's purple burr's and dock type leaves - hence the name Burr - dock.
In the self-selection/Applied Zoopharmacognosy approach, we offer it for infection as it is a well-known tissue cleanser. Offer along side other herbs which are known to support the immune system in expelling toxins.

I performed an 'unscheduled dismount' on a 16HH TB yesterday whilst in the top left hand corner of the arena. It was very windy and he's not a fan of wind. I havent hit the deck for a long time and it was an uncomplicated fall so no real harm done - to me, that is 🙃 However, after putting the horse back in the stable and untacking him, I could see an uncertainty and anxiety in his face. He is such a sensitive soul and when riding him, I am acutely aware of his sentitivity - using light aids etc ☺️ I happened to have Ylang ylang Essential Oil (Cert Organic from WhitethornHerbals.com) with me and offered it to him His face was transformed! After much licking and chewing, a new light shone through his eyes. He looked SO happy as his eyes smiled back at me! I was delighted to be able to relieve the uncertainty and anxiety that I saw in such a simple yet profound way ❤ I often feel we underestimate the effect on our horses of an 'unscheduled dismount' has on our horses and certainly my work over the years has revealed quite a few cases where animals have 'had their confidence dented' due to a fall - of either their rider or themselves. I was really really pleased to have this oil on me to help him redress the shock and possible anxiety around losing his pilot. After all I guess we could all do with a little courage at some time or other! No pic of the horse I am afraid, (and definitely not making public any purple skin!) so putting in a beautiful pic of Ylang ylang instead.
