I have been working dogs in harness, both in Ireland and abroad, for 15 years, and ran a sled dog rescue for 7 years. I believe in and only use scientifically proven positive training methods. The classes I run include general obedience, scentwork, canicross and other s

led dog disciplines, as well as general dog fitness, such as core conditioning and body awareness. I also do one to one training and behaviour consultations in NW Ireland. I cover an area between Ballina and Dromore West for dog walking and daily visits. I also offer a wedding day service, if you would like your dog(s) to be part of your special day.

Run/walk on the beach on Sunday morning.

This year it really is a fun run/walk, we are asking for a suggested donation of €10 per adult and €5 per child on the day.

Registration from 9am, with the start at 10am. Please keep all dogs on leads and under control. 3km and 5km options with 1.5km for children under 11. There is an inflow to cross so wet feet are pretty much guaranteed, bring a change of socks and shoes.

Straight after the run we will have the egg and spoon race.

The duck race will then be at the river at 12 noon.

More info about the dog show will be posted tomorrow.

Unfortunately, due to predicted high winds the Sup with your Pup is cancelled on Saturday. We've been very lucky each year with the weather conditions, our luck had to run out eventually and I guess with the 'summer' we've had this year, it was always going to be 2024 that it happened!

So we will be starting the fun activities in the Castlefield earlier, at 1pm - sausage hunt, Mantrailing, canicross and scooter demo and some games for your dogs so please come to the cake and bric-a-brac sales and then wander into the Castlefield.

Finally cold enough to start running the dogs this season. Olli was not impressed with the Line Out and wait training, he just wanted to run. Genetics really are incredible, only his 3rd run in harness but he knows exactly what to do. Short and sweet today, we'll build up over the next few weeks.

I've been quiet on social media recently as unfortunately we said goodbye to another member of the family this week. Darcy came to me from Dunboyne pound at 18 months, lots of people wanted to adopt him but he was a very vocal boy and his beautiful singing voice put them off. He was a great dog in harness, often running with juniors and keeping them safe on the trails. He earned working trek dog titles with AMWA and raced all over Ireland and the UK.
On his last evening I borrowed a dog buggy from a friend and we had one last walk together, the weather was lovely and it was the perfect way to say goodbye to him. The house is so, so quiet without him, 13 years of Mr Darcy, from the photo of him in the pound through to that last sunlit walk just wasn't enough.

I had the absolute pleasure of working with this gorgeous siberian husky pup yesterday. And his big sister came along too, although as you can see, she was determined to show that she doesn't need any training thank you very much. I used to have a house full of huskies, only have 2 left now and 2 husky crosses but I really do love the breed. His owner is doing so well with him, he's a very smart young boy.

Wild Atlantic Wag on weekend of September 14th/15th.
This year the Wag will be a fundraiser and awareness raiser for a condition that is affecting a very dear friend and great Wag supporter.
Myeloproliferative neoplasm is a group of blood cancers and Rebecca has been diagnosed with Polycythaemia Vera within this group. Cani-sports competitors and marathon runners across Ireland know Rebecca with her cheery nature and Can Do attitude and she is facing this illness in the same way that she tackles her running - determined and bloody minded.
The weekend will be full of fun and laughs as always, but with monies raised going to the charity of her choice. Any ideas for fundraising within the event will be gratefully received - we're thinking of a cake sale as well as the famous (?) Egg Sandwich competition.
More details of the weekend will be released as we get nearer and don't forget the Ocean Sands Hotel is dog friendly and a great supporter of the event.
See you in September

Today is Tesh's 2nd Gotcha Day, I've never shared her story publicly before, but it's time now to do so.
She is a foxhound who got separated from the hunt on a November day 3 years ago. The hunt tried to catch her a few times, as did the dog warden, but she would hide or run away and not let anyone near her.
She was very lucky as the village she was straying in has some amazing people in it who fed her and kept her alive for the 8 months - yes EIGHT MONTHS that she strayed. She survived a cold, wet winter, sleeping in hedges and sheds, got through lambing season without going near any livestock and somehow, even though she has absolutely no road sense, also survived the roads.
We tried to catch her on numerous occasions but although she eventually would take food from our hands but wouldn't allow anyone to touch her.
23rd July 2022 with a concerted effort from a group of us and a great vet, we managed to catch her. The local dog warden was very helpful and she was legally allowed to be adopted.
The first photo is Tesha winning the hound class at Enniscrone show, I am so so proud of her for trusting me enough to enter the show. Another photo is her first canicross race, hopefully there'll be some more running this coming season. Other photos show her in her favourite places, on the sofa and chair, although her very favourite place is under the duvet on my bed where she sleeps every night. The last couple of photos were taken when she first strayed by locals.
She is a talented thief, obviously a skill learnt when she was on the streets, including a whole tub of Pumpkin powder.
She is an incredibly sweet, soft girl who gives the best cuddles and woe betide me if I stop stroking her - that's usually met with a paw to the face to carry on.
Happy Gotcha Day Tesha,

Vincent Wooly-sibe 02/01/2009-13/072024

Many people knew Vince, not just in Ireland but abroad as well. The boy who lived, born by c-section to a very skinny rescue husky who was taken out of a pound, his Mum bit the tip of his nose and one of his ears off, hence his name. I hand reared him and his littermates, he survived pneumonia at 6 weeks and then spent his life being awesome.
He earned working trek titles and won a few championships in Ireland and the UK. But most of all, he was a happy, much loved dog who is going to be missed so very much.
Run free Vince, go and see how many sausages are waiting over Rainbow Bridge.

Don't forget to save the date for the Wild Atlantic Wag 2024, the weekend of 14th/15th September in Enniscrone. Planning is underway, there will be the traditional beach run, fun dog show, Sup with your Pup and as it's an Olympic year, we will repeat last year's sports day with the egg and spoon race and various sausage shenanigans.

Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Sometimes, in an attempt to fix one problem, we create another 🫣 When Olli came home last summer I would take him to work every day as I couldn't leave him at home all day with the adult dogs unsupervised - and he needed small meals through the day. He had lots of interaction with me, walks and food but unfortunately now wants to stay home with his buddies rather than go in the van - even though the van usually means fun walks and runs. So I decided to counter condition him to the van with that very popular dog treat - squeezy cheese, that I had to go to Enniskillen to get.
So now, he still doesn't want to go in the van and is scared of squeezy cheese 🙃
He actually does like the cheese, he will take it inside the house but outside he now associates it with the van - which was the point of the exercise - but in a negative way. Back to the drawing board. So don't get disheartened if your training isn't going quite according to plan, these are sentient beings that we are working with who are allowed to have their own quirky ways, we just have to find a way around them.

Riley Murphy AWTD silver 22/10/09-26/05/24

My big fella passed away at home yesterday, he has been struggling with his back legs for a few weeks, although had improved recently but on Saturday evening he unexpectedly went into heart failure. His quality of life with his lack of mobility and no control over his bladder or bowels had me coming to the decision to have him pts but he took matters into his own paws and decided it was time to go.

He was never a great working dog, no that's not fair, he was never a sprint dog, he didn't like running and pulling but he would trot and pull quite happily. He was a blood donor and of course qualified for and went to Crufts, raising the profile of rescue dogs for a while with an appearance on national radio - when he showed that his media career should have been bigger by choosing Markies over sausages live on air and delighting our Crufts sponsor, Pedigree.

Run free big fella, a life that nearly ended at only 9 months at the end of a farmer's gun got an extra 14 years of love, fun and adventure.

I work outside for most of the day and water doesn't always cut it, it's important to stay hydrated. So I'm trying a new product from a small Irish company based in Mayo. So far I've tried the lemon and lime it's really nice. Will put it in my water bottle on the bike as well. Thanks to for putting me onto this great product.
