Household hazards for your cat 🐱

While not an extensive list, we have included below the most common household hazards for your cat.

Human drugs including ibuprofen and paracetamol 💊
Chocolate 🍫
String (can cause linear foreign bodies!) 🧶
Onions, garlic, chives, leek 🧄🧅
Antifreeze (ethylene glycol) - cats are attracted to the taste of this! 💧
Toothpaste 🪥
Lilies 💐

A special note about lilies... 🎋 These flowers are commonly found in floral arrangements and even small amounts of ingestion of flowers or the leaves can cause irreversible kidney failure in your cat. The pollen (ingested through grooming or by sniffing at the plant) and even the water that lilies sit in, will all cause kidney injury and immediate veterinary care is necessary. 🩺
This is true of all lily species.

(Please note this is not an exhaustive list.)

If your cat has ingested (or in the case of lilies, merely come into contact!) with any of these items, please contact your vet. 📞🩺

Household toxins and your dog 🐶

Did you know these items are harmful / toxic for your dog?

Chocolate 🍫
Raisins and grapes 🍇
Xylitol (sometimes labelled as 'birch sugar / wood sugar') - found in sugar free items such as chewing gum/sweets 🍬
Bones - these can cause blockages or tears in the gastrointestinal tract so can be dangerous to give to your pets!
Raw dough 🥣
Caffeine (tea/coffee) ☕
Garlic, chives, onions, leeks 🧅🧄
Toothpaste 🪥
Ibuprofen (highly toxic to dogs and cats) 💊

If your pet has ingested any of these items, you should always call your vet. 📞🩺
(P.S. Stay tuned for more of our household toxin series!)

It's international cat day! 🥳🐈

Cats are such wonderfully strange creatures and it is only right that they have their very own day to celebrate such a fact. Did you know cats have been an integral part of households since the time of the ancient Egyptians? They believed cats brought divine energy and good luck to homes and many of their deities were 'feline' in appearance.

To celebrate, share your cat's picture below!

July's Hero! 🐱

Meet Hunta, our July hero. 🫶
Hunta was involved in a road traffic accident and brought to us by a good Samaritan who saw her. She had sustained severe head trauma and had a mild break in her jaw.
Hunta received supportive care and needed a feeding tube in order to receive food while she was recovering from her injuries. After ten days of being fed through her tube, Hunta began to eat alone and her tube was removed.
In a perfect ending, Hunta's owners were located and after two weeks, she was discharged from hospital.
She was the bravest girl throughout her hospitalisation!

Well done Hunta 👏👏👏

We see new cat owners every week here at The Well Pet Hospital and a common question is how to introduce their new cat/kitten to the outdoors. 🌳🍁

There are three things we advise before allowing your kitten/cat access to the outdoors:
1) Vaccines! Make sure your cat/kitten has been fully vaccinated to protect them against infectious diseases.
2) Neutering! We advise all clients to neuter their cats if they will be letting them outdoors to prevent straying/fighting/transmission of infectious diseases.
3) Microchipping! Ideally before letting our kitten/cat out for the first time, we advise that your cat is microchipped so they can be identified.

Letting them out:
🐱 It is a good idea to get your cat used to being called! Call their name and reward them with a treat when they respond to you in the weeks prior to letting them out.
🐱 Supervise your kitten/cat the first time they go out to the garden. Remove anything hazardous where they may harm themselves.
🐱 If your cat is older, you should wait a few weeks (around 3weeks) before letting them out so that they are used to their new home.
🐱 Let your cat out when: you are home, on a dry day and a quiet time (no barking dogs etc.), before a routine mealtime when you can call them back inside after a short period.
🐱 How your cat is going to gain access to the outdoors long-term should also be considered - cat flap vs an open window etc. This will be a consideration based on individual households.

Cats generally adapt fairly quickly to the outdoors but some may take more time. Each cat is different. 😊

June's Hero of the Month 🐾🩺

Meet beautiful Winnie, a nine-year-old spaniel who presented to our clinic with a condition known as a pyometra.
A pyometra is a condition where unneutered female dogs (usually middle-aged or older) develop an infection in their uterus that cause it to fill with pus. This is a very serious condition that can be life-threatening if left untreated. Luckily, her owners noticed she was unwell and brought her down to us straight away.
Winnie received fluid therapy and antibiotic treatment to stabilize her condition prior to surgery to have her uterus and ovaries removed.

Winnie was a star patient and stole the hearts of all the staff here at The Well Pet Hospital. Even when sick, she always greeted us with a waggy tail 🐶

Well done Winnie! 🙌

It's not always easy to know when to intervene when you find an injured bird.🐦🦆🦉
Fledglings (which there are lots of right now!) will leave the nest and spend time on the ground while their flight muscles develop, so they are not always in need of assistance.

Kildare Wildlife Rescue has shared with us a series of pictures with their recommendations for what to do when you find a bird you think may be injured. This is a great resource, but we want to reiterate that the best course of action is to contact a wildlife rescue such as Kildare Wildlife Rescue with a picture of the bird to properly identify the correct course of action.🩺🐾 Kildare Wildlife Rescue

Here at The Well Pet Hospital, we have been seeing lots of litters of kittens and wanted to remind all our clients on the importance of neutering. 🩺🐾

Did you know, cats can reach sexual maturity and have kittens of their own at just four months of age... Here at the Well Pet Hospital, we strongly advise neutering of cats. 😺 Neutering is part of responsible pet ownership and benefits include control of transmissible disease, ethical control of population along with health and behavioural benefits.

For further information or to schedule a chat with one of our vets or vet nurses, call us on 071-9304978 📞

The Vets and Nurses of the Well Pet Hospital have all qualified as RECOVER Certified Advanced Life Support Rescuers® after an intense but enjoyable training course in CPR and Emergency Care given by Niamh O'Donoghue of UCD Veterinary Hospital.

Whilst we never want to have to use them, the skills that we practiced this weekend will help us to provide the best possible care to your pets if an emergency arises.

Duke visited us this morning to receive his puppy vaccines and was the best boy! 🐶💉Look how handsome he is!

🩺Why do we vaccinate?
To protect our pets against dangerous infectious disease and to control the spread of infectious diseases.

🩺Which dangerous disease?
In dogs, we vaccinate against parvovirus, leptospirosis, infectious hepatitis, distemper and 'kennel cough'.
In cats, we vaccinate against feline calicivirus, feline herpes virus, feline panleukopenia virus and feline leukemia virus (FeLV).
All of these conditions are potentially life-threatening.

🩺What is involved in vaccinating?
Kittens and puppies or adult pets restarting their vaccine course will need two injections given a few weeks apart. Lifelong yearly vaccines will be required after this.

🩺What about rabbits?
Rabbits can receive vaccinations against myxomatosis and VHD, both of which are fatal illness for this species.

To book your pet in for their vaccines now, call us on 071-9304978 😸🐶

Meet April's Hero of the Month, Fáin! 😍

This beautiful boy first came to our clinic in March after an unknown trauma which caused paralysis in his tail and difficulty controlling his hindlimbs.
After 6 days of intense hospitalisation, Fáin was ready to go home to his loving owners and continue treatment as an outpatient. 🩺

Whilst his treatment is still ongoing, using a mixture on oral medications and acupuncture, he has regained some movement in his tail and can now jump again!
We couldn't be prouder of the progress Fáin has made and the dedication his owners have shown to him. 💙

Well done Fáin!😸
