☀️ Hot Weather Alert for Pet Owners! ☀️

As temperatures rise, so does the risk of heat stroke in our beloved pets. Unlike humans, animals can’t sweat effectively to cool down—making them more vulnerable to overheating, especially in warm weather.

🐾 What to Watch For: Heat stroke can sneak up quickly. Be alert for:
- Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
- Bright red gums or tongue
- Lethargy, confusion, or unsteadiness
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
- Collapse or seizures in severe cases

🌡️ When Is It Too Hot? For most dogs and cats, temperatures above 20°C can start to pose a risk—especially if they’re active or left in hot environments like cars, conservatories, or poorly ventilated rooms.

🚨 If You Suspect Heat Stroke:
- Move your pet to a cool, shaded area immediately
- Offer cool (not cold) water to drink
- Gently wet them with cool water, especially on their paws, armpits, and belly (do not cover them with a wet towel)

Contact us or your nearest vet urgently—heat stroke is life-threatening and needs immediate care

✅ Prevention Tips:
- Walk dogs early in the morning or late evening
- Avoid hot pavements—if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws
- Never leave pets in vehicles, even for a few minutes
- Keep fresh water and shade always available

Let’s keep our furry friends cool, comfortable, and safe this summer. 🐶🐱❤️ If you have concerns or questions, our team is just a phone call away!

🌿 Fledgling Season Reminder! 🐦

This time of year, you might come across a young bird (a fledgling) on the ground. It can be tempting to “rescue” them but most of the time, they don’t need our help.

If the bird is fully feathered, alert, and not in immediate danger, it’s likely a fledgling learning to fly. Their parents are usually nearby, watching and feeding them as they figure things out. Please leave them be unless they are clearly injured or at risk (e.g., in a busy road or near predators).

If you do find a bird that is visibly injured, unresponsive, or in danger, please contact Kildare Wildlife Rescue as soon as possible. You can find their contact info and guidance on their page.

In the meantime:

Gently place the fledgling in a ventilated cardboard box lined with a soft towel.

Keep it in a quiet, warm, and dark space away from pets and children.

Do not feed or give water unless advised as improper feeding can be harmful.

If the bird is bleeding, has obvious trauma, or is suffering, the kindest thing may be to bring them to your local vet for humane euthanasia, which most vets will do free of charge for wildlife.

Let’s do our part to protect nature’s tiny learners. 💚

🩺 The Importance of Pre-Anaesthetic Blood Tests 🩺

At Applewood Vets, your pet’s safety and well-being are our top priorities—especially when they need surgery or a procedure requiring anaesthesia. That’s why we highly recommend pre-anaesthetic blood tests for:

✅ Pets over the age of 7 ✅ Any pet with an underlying health condition

These tests help us:
🔍 Check organ function (especially liver & kidneys, which process anaesthesia)
❤️ Assess for hidden health issues that could affect recovery
⚖️ Tailor anaesthesia to your pet’s specific needs for a safer experience

💡 Did you know? It’s also highly recommended that all pets get a blood test every 6 months, especially if they are on long-term medication. Regular bloodwork helps us monitor their health, catch potential issues early, and adjust treatments if needed.

Even if your pet seems healthy, these tests give us vital information to ensure the smoothest procedure and best possible outcome.

If your furry friend has an upcoming procedure or is on long-term medication, talk to us about blood testing—it’s a small step that makes a big difference! 🐶🐱💙

☀️ Summer Sun Safety for Your Pets! 🐶🐱

Did you know that pets can get sunburned too? Just like us, our furry friends are vulnerable to the sun’s harmful rays, especially on sensitive areas like the nose, ears, belly, and around the eyes where hair coverage is thin or absent.

🐾 White-coated pets or those with light skin are particularly at risk. These pets often have less natural protection and are more prone to sunburn and even skin cancer if left unprotected.

✅ Protect your pets with pet-safe sun cream but never use human sunscreen, as it can be toxic to animals.

📅 Whether you're heading to the beach, the park, or just out for a sunny stroll, don’t forget sun protection for your four-legged companions.

What to Do If Your Pet Is Choking 🚨🐾

Every pet parent’s worst fear: your cat or dog starts choking! Knowing what to do in those critical moments can save their life. Here’s what you need to know:

🔹 Stay Calm: Your pet will be panicked—your calmness helps them.
🔹 Check Their Mouth: If it’s safe, look inside. If you see an object, gently try to dislodge with your fingers. Be careful—they might bite if frightened!
🔹 Perform Pet Heimlich Maneuver:

Small Pets: Hold them with their back against your chest and use firm, upward thrusts just below their ribs.

Large Dogs: Stand behind them, place your fists below their rib cage, and give quick, upward thrusts.
🔹 CPR May Be Needed: If your pet stops breathing, chest compressions and rescue breaths may help.
🔹 Rush to the Vet: Even if the object is removed, see a vet to ensure no internal injuries.

Being prepared can make all the difference. Save this post, share with fellow pet owners, and let’s keep our furry friends safe! ❤️🐶🐱

🌍 Why Leaving Dog P**p Behind Hurts More Than You Think 🐶

💩We get it—picking up dog p**p isn’t the most glamorous part of pet ownership. But did you know that leaving it behind can seriously harm the environment? Here's why responsible pet clean-up is a must:

🚨 Water Pollution When dog waste is left on the ground, rain can wash it into nearby storm drains, streams, and rivers. It contains harmful bacteria and parasites that can contaminate water sources, posing a risk to wildlife and even humans.

🌱 Impact on Soil & Plants Contrary to popular belief, dog p**p doesn’t act as a natural fertilizer. In fact, it’s full of nutrients that can disrupt local plant life, leading to imbalances in the ecosystem.

🐾 Hazards to Wildlife & Other Pets Parasites and bacteria found in pet waste—such as E. coli and Giardia—can infect other animals that come into contact with it. Picking up after your pet helps protect local wildlife and keeps your neighbourhood clean and safe.

🔎 Legal & Community Responsibility Many areas have laws requiring pet owners to clean up after their dogs. Leaving waste behind can result in fines—not to mention unhappy neighbours!

✅ What Can You Do?

Always carry biodegradable waste bags when walking your dog.

Dispose of pet waste in designated trash bins or consider eco-friendly composting options.

Spread awareness! Encourage fellow pet owners to do their part in keeping the community clean.

Let’s work together to protect our environment and keep our spaces safe for everyone. 🏞️🐕

📢 Attention Pet Owners! 🐾

Keeping track of your pet's health treatments is crucial for their overall well-being. Here are some key reasons to stay on top of it:

🩺 Vaccinations: Timely vaccines protect your furry friends from serious diseases and ensure they're safe around other pets. If Vaccines are missed not only can it cause serious health issues but it means starting the immunization process over again!

🐜 Flea & Worm Treatments: Regular treatments prevent those pesky parasites from causing discomfort or health issues for your pets.

💊 Medications & Blood Tests: If your pet is on medication, monitoring and periodic blood tests are vital to ensure their treatment is effective and their health is stable.

While we strive to send reminders, they are not always perfect. It's best to also keep track on your own to help ensure nothing is missed.

Don't let these important dates slip through the cracks! Set reminders, mark your calendars, and keep a log of all treatments. Your pets count on you to keep them healthy and happy. 🐶🐱❤️
